Chapter Nineteen

Nora and Michael took a few days to collect themselves. Michael needed to allow his magic to refuel. They were the three most peaceful days of either of their lives. On the third night, the laid curled up next to each other on the couch.

"We have to go back don't we?" Michael asked. Nora tilted her face up to look at him.

"You know we do. Emma is still alive. We have to end it. This time for real." Michael sighed.

"I know," he said quietly. They lapsed into a nervous silence before eventually falling asleep.

Nora woke up the next morning to a voice she didn't recognize.

"You have to listen to me-" it started.

"No. I don't," Michael responded.

"Please son. What your mother and I did was wrong. I know that now. Let me help you."

"I don't need your help."

"Yes you do. I know things about what happened that you don't."

"Get out." Nora quietly stood up and made her way towards the voices. The two of them were standing in the kitchen. Michael had his arms crossed in front of his chest. He was facing a man who must have been his father. The man was the perfect reflection of what Nora imagined an older Michael would have looked like.

"Son-" the man started.

"You have lost the right to call me that."

"Michael?" Nora said quietly from the doorway. Both men turned to face her. Michael's face instantly softened, while his father looked at her curiously.

"Good morning," Michael said, walking towards her. Nora's eyes were glued to his father.

"Nice to meet you," his father said. "My name is William. I'm Michael's father."

"What are you doing here?" she asked. He pursed his lips.

"I was offering my help. I assume you're trying to stop my daughter?" Nora nodded slowly.

"I told you to leave," Michael started, but Nora put a hand on his arm.

"What help are you offering?" She asked.

"I assume you met the fireflies last time you were at my home?" Nora nodded again.

"They are one of the few creatures you can trust in that house. You must get a knife from them. That is the only thing that can kill Emma." Michael shook his head.

"If that's all you have to offer then you can go now. We already know all of that. Nora got a knife from them. Emma used an illusion charm to trick us into stabbing the illusion with it. When she revealed herself she took the knife and broke it in half and-"

"That's not possible," his father interjected.

"What?" Nora asked.

"The fireflies wouldn't have just given you the knife. They alwasy ask for a price. Their trustworthy, but nothing is ever free with them, and the knife would have been indestructable. Their powers are more powerful than anything else."

"So...what?" Nora asked.

"Whoever gave you that knife was not a firefly. In fact, they were probably Emma in disguise. All you need to do in order to finally kill Emma is-"

"We have to find the real fireflies and bargain with them for the real knife. Then we can use that knife to kill her," Nora inturrupted.

"Exactly."

"Then we have to go. Right now," she said, suddenely full of energy before it all leaked out of her. She dissolved into a coughing fit. She could hardly breathe.

"Nora! What's wrong?" Michael asked, holding her up. She didn't have time to respond before another fit of coughs overtook her. She felt sweat breaking out on her forehead before her body went limp and everything faded to black.
