Chapter Five
Michael reached his arm out and pushed me behind him, raising his other hand in front of us.
"Really Michael? You know you can't win this. Just let me have Nora," Emma said pleasantly.
"Why? So you can murder her like the rest?" Michael retorts. Nora, making one of the wisest decisions of her life, stayed silent.
"Murder? I would never!" Emma responded, sounding truly offended.
"Oh. Right. I'm sorry Emma. Mom does all of the murdering. You just eat the souls. How could I have ever made that mistake," Michael responded, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Emma didn't seem amused, and neither was Nora.
Eating souls? What the hell was going on? she thought to herself.
"You are wearing down my patience very quickly Michael. Give her to me or you will pay," Emma said, her voice no longer pleasant.
"No," was all Michael said, all traces of amusement and sarcasm gone. Emma took a step towards them and Michael shouted, "Recipio!" Emma was blown off of her feet, landing on her back a few feet away. "We need to run before she gets up," Michael whispered to Nora.
"Why should I trust you?" she responded.
"You don't have a choice. Now run!" He said more firmly, pushing her away from Emma. Nora decided that now was not the time to question him, and she ran. She heard a roar from behind her and was instantly knocked to the ground by an invisible force. She tried to get up, but it was as if there was a huge weight pressing down on her back. "Missio!" She heard Michael shout, and the weight disappeared, but by then it was too late. Emma had gotten up and was walking towards them, fury apparent on her face. Michael was sitting in the grass, something like fear showing in his eyes.
"You will come peacefully, or I will force you," Emma said, her tone clipped and impatient.
"Then I guess you'll have to force us," Nora responded, her voice hardening to try and cover her fear. Michael looked at her, surprised. Seeing the determination on her face, he stood up.
"Suit yourself," Emma said. She flicked her hands towards us, but Michael was ready for her.
"Scutum," Michael said. Nora felt a warm breeze caress her skin but that was all. It didn't seem to faze Emma at all. She directed wave after wave of invisible attacks towards them, and Michael blocked every single one, but Nora could see the fatigue on Michael's face. She didn't think he could keep this up for long. They had to get out of there. But how? Nora looked around and saw a car parked on the side of the rode. It was a 1967 Chevi Impala. A very nice car, but old. Nora looked at it thoughtfully for a few moments before turning back to Michael.
"Cover me," she said.
"What are you doing?" He responded as Nora started walking towards the car.
"Improvising," she said. "When I draw her attention to me, you need to let her send whatever she's sending at me. Don't stop it. Let her get in one hit. Just one though." Michael looked skeptical. "Just do it," Nora said, losing patience. Michael gave her a long look and then nodded. Nora wasn't religious, but when she got to the car she sent up a silent prayer that she wasn't about to do something incredibly stupid. "Hey Emma!" She shouted. Emma whipped her head towards Nora and sent some sort of blast at her. Michael let it through, but she Nora thought she saw him wince slightly when the blast hit. Nora ducked and the car took the full force of the blast. Nora smiled to herself as she heard the windows shatter. "Put the shield back up!" She shouted at Michael.
"Whatever you're doing, hurry up!" He shouted back. The second blast that Emma sent didn't hit Nora or the car. Nora breathed a sigh of relief. She reached her hand through the broken window and unlocked the car. The alarm was going off, but the other people on the street didn't seem to care enough to come out of their houses. Before he died, Nora's dad had taught her a lot about cars. She just hoped what she remembered was enough. She quickly removed the plastic cover on the steering column and pulled the access panel free. She felt the car shake slightly which told her that Michael's shields were starting to fail. She felt around for a few seconds and found the wiring harness connecter. She selected what she hoped was the right bunch of wires and reached into her pocket. Thank god she always carried a pocket knife with her. She delicately stripped the ends of two of the wires and twisted them together. She took a deep breath and prepared herself for the most dangerous part. She kept a close hold on her bare wires and started to spark the starter wire, praying to all deities that she wouldn't be electrocuted. She revved the engine a few times and let out a whoop of delight when it started. The whoop quickly died in her throat when she saw Michael on the ground and Emma standing over him. She briefly considered leaving him there, but then she thought of all he had done to keep her alive. She got out of the car.
"Emma stop," she said. Emma turned to her and smiled. "You want me. Just let him go," Nora said, raising her hands in surrender.
"You are even dumber than I thought," Emma responded, smirking. She flicked her wrist at Nora and she felt invisible ropes start to bind her. She struggled but it was pointless. She should have driven away when she had the chance.
As always like if you liked it and comment no matter what.
This was a little bit longer than I was expecting but I hope you enjoyed it.
