What's Eating Sirius Black?
Sirius had never been more grateful for the winds of the brisk English weather that met him as he pushed open the nearest door leading outside. He needed space, for the first time in a long time he felt isolated yet claustrophobic at the same time, he could feel the tension building in the pit of his stomach and did all he could to push it back down.
Sirius couldn't remember the last time he felt so out of his comfort zone, the unfamiliar surroundings stirring anxiety he thought long lost and forgotten. His ears rang against the gales and he could feel his heartbeat race in his fingertips. Sirius was generally quite slow to anger, but something had tipped him over the line, all caution thrown to the wind. There was no way he could stay in a room where people accepted Remus to be spoken about in such a way.
Sitting on the hard floor, Sirius held his head in his shaking hands and tried to calm himself down, he sat wondering how he allowed himself to get in to such a state, people were bound to judge Remus, he knew that, Remus made sure he knew that, he'd be lying if he said he didn't immediately wonder about Remus' scars, but he just couldn't get over the audacity of some people to voice their opinions as they did.
Sirius felt suddenly selfish in his emotions, he was sat on the verge of tears while Remus was having to face this himself. Remus had always been good at hiding his emotions, he never wore his heart on his sleeve, and lord only knows James wouldn't bother forcing the truth out of him. So Sirius got a hold of himself and stopped freaking out, if Remus could get through the day then he sure as hell could.
Sirius knew there was no point trying to find his next class yet, he'd hardly spent 20 minutes in the Drama class and there was no way he was going back in there. After little deliberation he decided to try and find the library, surely they couldn't refuse pupils access.
He took one look at his timetable and deduced that room 62 wouldn't be so difficult to find, so he headed back indoors, realising, as the warmth hit him, just how cold it was outside. The library was clearly situated on the second floor so Sirius took to the first flight of stairs he came across, but his detour to the library was interrupted a little way along the corridor.
Catching a glimpse into the class to his right, Sirius recognised the mess of black hair staring down absently at the book in front of him, quickly registering the sandy hair next to him Sirius stopped dead in his tracks. For a moment he considered interrupting the lesson but his better judgement quickly caught up with him and he decided to move on before he was seen.
Sirius tried not to let his thoughts race as they wished to, he reminded himself over and over of how he needed to be strong, for Remus if not himself. Though Sirius tried to focus on his feet hitting the floor, he could not help but wonder how long he and his friends could endure this school.
A little further down the corridor, Sirius again was stopped. Head in a mess and emotions on the verge of extremism, he narrowly avoided colliding with a man of very familiar attire.
"Do be careful won't you? I don't fancy doing the tango with a student right now." Mr Clatworth spoke in a joking tone, but Sirius was far from the mood for joking, an unusual occurrence for Sirius.
"Oh, if only you could watch what you're saying to pupils in such a way." Sirius retorted angrily, he knew this was not a suitable thing to say to a teacher and that he was probably about to get in a lot of trouble for it, but at that very moment he couldn't care less.
It was only then that Mr Clatworth recognised Sirius, a look of guilt crossed his face before he spoke again.
"I understand that you are upset with me and I apologise for offending your friend, but that really is no way to treat a teacher." He was attempting an assertive tone, but that clearly was not something he had very much experience with judging by the way his voice shook.
"I would never dream of speaking to a respectable teacher in such a way." Sirius spat before swiftly continuing forward, leaving the disgrace of a teacher in his wake.
Sirius really couldn't quite understand what was eating away at him so badly that he was acting out in such a way, he had seemed to lose all control of his actions and was speaking on impulse alone, he had not spent half a day in this unfamiliar environment and already he seemed to be losing some inward battle.
It was when Sirius realised that he no longer knew what he was doing or where exactly he was that he finally seemed to understand what was happening to him. He was alone, helpless, deluded. He could only match these exact emotions to one other point in his life-the moment, believe it or not, he realised that he may just be feeling love, true, real and pure love, for the first time.
Upon this realisation, Sirius felt all his anxiety and turmoil melt away, as though his momentous self-discovery, of sorts, left him free of a burden he had been carrying for years, when, in all reality, it had been on his mind for all of an hour.
Sirius hadn't quite realised how long he had been wandering the halls for, but as he turned the corner he found himself faced with the doors to what looked something like a sports hall, with muggle activities all set up around the room. Sirius didn't care very much for the room so took one swift look at the clock and realised that he had just five minutes to get back downstairs before his next lesson.
With a new found spring in his step, Sirius ventured, almost happily, through the concrete jungle of the school, enjoying the tranquility of the empty halls and muffled sounds coming from each classroom. As he was half way down the stairs, the shrill bell toiled once more, reminding Sirius again of the pained wince of Remus' as the bell last rung.
He quickly reached the door of room 62 and recognised some faces, but none he could put names to. That was, until Peter strode confidently beside that girl he had taken an interest in earlier that morning, Sirius, though, wasn't sure of her name.
"Peter, thank fuck." Sirius sighed as Peter joined him, still seemingly attached to this girl. Peter showed absolutely no sign of actually acknowledging Sirius' presence, but it would do, for now, as they were flocked in through the door of what would, hopefully, be a much better lesson than the first.
