Chapter 9:Mrs. Williams
It's 6:30, and I just came back from my job. Teaching is exhausting! I sit down on the couch and look through my students' grades. "How is Michael failing my class?! All you have to do is listen and take notes!" I sigh. "Looks like I'll need to find him a tutor." I decide.
"Mother, I need to talk to you." My son walks down the stairs and sits down on the couch next to me.
"What is it that my dear son wants to tell me?" I ask, smiling. "You know, you never talk to me like you used to when you were little anymore." I pout.
"Yes, yes. I know, but I still confide in you about the school," he replies.
"No, I want to know about what's happening in your life outside of school, Kendall."
"Mother, can we talk about that later. What I'm about to ask you is important." He sighs.
"Okay, okay. Speak now or forever hold your peace." I chuckle.
"Would you mind if I invited a friend and her family over for dinner tomorrow night?" he asks, waiting eagerly for my response.
"Sure! I'll let your father know. She must be a very special girl for you to invite her over even though you're not dating...right?" I ask curiously.
"No, mother, I'm not. She's just a friend," he says. "Until Christmas...I hope," he murmurs the last part, but I can still hear it. The corners of my mouth turn up.
"Okay, Kendall. I'm going to go tell your father now," I say, standing up. He nods and heads upstairs. I walk to my husband's study where he's seated at his desk and talking on the phone.
"Tell him if he needs me, he needs to find a way to pay the fee," he says sternly. He spots me and ends the call. "What is it, Sienna?" he asks, leaning on the desk.
"Ryan, honey. Kendall wants to invite a female friend and her family over for dinner tomorrow night. What do you think? This is the first time he's brought a friend over." I make sure to add in the last part. He thinks for a while.
"That's alright as long as it doesn't affect his grades," he responds.
"Thank you, honey." I kiss his cheek.
. . .
I put on my earrings and look at myself in the mirror. This will surely leave a good impression on her family. I head to the kitchen and find the maids preparing dinner. "Girls, listen up." They turn to my attention.
"Miss Sienna, you look gorgeous!" Bennett, the head maid, compliments.
"Thank you, Benette," I reply. "I have a favor to ask of you all."
"Anything for you, Miss Sienna," they all say.
"Ok, when the guests arrive, I want all of you to head to the basement. Don't come out until I come to get you."
"But why? We have many things to do," Bennett states.
"Because Kendall is bringing his potential girlfriend over for dinner, and I want to test her."
"What? That's wonderful! The young master has finally brought a girl over," Benette says happily.
"Yes, yes. Now, set the food out on the table and head to the basement. You can do some cleaning while you are down there," I state and head out.
I hear Kendall conversing with several people and decide to make an entrance. I walk to the living room and spot a fair, young lady with brown curls. "You must be Violet! I've heard quite a lot about you from my son," I say excitedly. If she's a fashion snob, she would know that the dress I'm wearing is expensive and made by a well-known designer, Riko Anne, and she would point it out.
"Nice to meet you, Mrs. Williams. You're very beautiful," she compliments.
"Oh, please! Me? Ha, thank you, dear," I laugh sweetly. Guess she isn't a fashionista or shopping maniac; that's good so far. The greetings finish, and we eat dinner. She seems like a very good girl. No wonder Kendall's smitten. My son might have hit the jackpot. I stand up and start collecting the dirty dishes, and as I wanted, she quickly stands up and starts collecting the dishes as well.
"I'll help with the dishes, Mrs. Williams," she carries them to the sink.
"Violet, you don't need to do that, Benette will do it. Where is she?" Kendall asks.
"She was sick, so I sent her home," I answer.
"Ask someone else to do it, mother. She's our guest," he says, stopping her.
"I don't mind, Kendall," she continues washing the dishes. Her family members aren't here, so I should use this opportunity.
"Kendall, go check on your father. Ask if he wants some fruit," I command. He hesitates then leaves. She finishes washing the dishes and dries them with a rag.
"You're so well-mannered, Violet, and from what I've heard, you are an intelligent young lady. Your parents must be so proud," I say, smiling warmly. She turns to me and gives a faint smile. She doesn't give off a narcissistic persona; that's good as well.
"Yeah...they must be so proud..." she says with a hint of sadness in her tone.
"Mother, I thought I told you not to bring up her parents!" Kendall states sternly, returning. He goes to her side and holds her hand. "You alright?" she nods.
"What? Why?" What's wrong with asking that?
"Because they-..." He stops to look at her.
"They're dead," she finishes the sentence, and I internally gasp. What have I done?
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Violet. I didn't know." I embrace her gently, and she returns it.
"It's alright," she points out. Whew! I'm glad.
"Well, if anything, you can see me as a mother figure if you'd like, Violet." I smile, and she chuckles, nodding.
"Thank you, Mrs. Williams," she says. "Thank you for the wonderful dinner as well," she adds in. After that, her family thanks me and says their goodbyes. I turn to Kendall and look at him with a smirk on my face.
"She's pretty special. Is she the one?" I ask.
"Mother, stop it." He blushes, embarrassed, and I laugh gaily. "She is special in her own way," he adds in, his eyes sparkling.
"Go thank your father for allowing her family to eat with us," I say, shooing him. He leaves, and I head down to the basement. The maids are standing idly, their surroundings clean and organized. "Girls," I say. They all turn their attention to me.
"How did it go, Miss Sienna?" Benette asks curiously.
"She is a beautiful girl. I think Kendall has really outdone himself with choosing his potential girlfriend," I state happily.
"That's great! We'll be happy with serving her as the young master's lady. Right, girls?" she asks. The other maids nod happily.
"I'm guessing she's passed the test?" she asks.
"Yes, indeed she has," I reply.
"Whatever was the test, Miss Sienna?" she asks as well.
"It's nothing much. Now, get back to work, girls," I answer.
"Alright," Benette says, motioning for the rest to follow her upstairs and out of the basement. Kendall, I'm proud of you, my son. Violet will surely make him happy. She has all the amazing qualities that make her unique in her own way. I'm glad she's not a snobby gold digger. Furthermore, I'm sure Kendall would never introduce a girl like that to us, and he surely doesn't take a liking to snobby, narcissistic, mean girls.
