Chapter 4:One More Day
Yesterday, after Roxie and I reached home, we tried on the costumes and rated each other. We both got 100 out of 10, of course, because we are best friends. The next day, which is today, I arrive to school with Roxie. I decide to start on the model without Kendall so that when lunch comes, we won't have to spend so much time on it. I don't have any classes with him today, so I have to wait until lunch to find him. Lucky for me, he came to my class as soon as the bell rang.
I've just finished packing my books into my bag when he walks up to me with a smile on his face. His eyes are practically beaming like stars. I smile back shyly, but notice some girls giving me the side-eye. They are whispering to each other. Probably cussing the Chemistry teacher out for not pairing them up with Kendall.
I know I don't deserve him, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to work with him. It's just a school project for crying out loud. We're not even dating. Just thinking about us being a couple has me feeling extremely hot.
He waits until I put my bag on then grabs my hand and leads me outside, leaving Roxie gawking at us with her mouth wide open as if it's been unhinged. Just right before we get past the door and into the hallway, she gives me a sly smile and her eyebrows dance up and down while she makes hearts with her hands.
I smack my face and sigh at my friend's total support of us being a potential couple, which is so NOT happening. I feel so nervous because everybody's looking at us holding hands. He leads me into the library, and we settle down. "Sorry about holding your hand so suddenly."
"No, it's fine." We give each other awkward smiles. It's so obvious both of us are blushing right now, but I don't know why Kendall is. Is it because he's never held a girl's hand before? I push the thought away and focus on the project.
"Sorry for not telling you, but I've started on the model already." I slowly take it out and show it to him.
"You shouldn't have started without me. You've done so much already." He furrows his brows at me, and it looks so cute.
"Well, I'm compensating for falling asleep when we did the project."
"I've already told you it was okay." He sighs, and I smile sadly.
"Sorry, Kendall," I apologize.
"It's alright, Violet. You're not in the wrong for wanting to make things equal between us but just don't do too much by yourself. I don't want you to overwork yourself." The library is empty around lunch, so it's just us two inside.
We continue to finish the model and succeed after half-an-hour. Finally, I won't have to be around him anymore. I'm sure he is just as relieved to stop seeing me as I am. I'm not as pretty as the other girls in the school, and I'm not popular, so there's no reason for him to talk to me.
All that's left is for us to present on Wednesday, and that's it. As I am about to leave, he stops me. "Violet, wait. You're forgetting your book again." He chuckles and hands me the book I forgot the first time we met up.
"Oh, thanks." I smile and take the book from his hands. "See you tomorrow, Kendall." I bow a little and run out of the library before he could say anything else.
. . .
Roxie is sitting by herself in the cafeteria picking at her food. When I sit down in front of her, she quickly turns her attention to me. "That was mega cute when he just took you by your hand and left!" she gushes.
"Really? I didn't think that was necessary, to be honest. I'm sorry I left you in class."
"No problem, Vi. You guys had to finish the project. I so ship you guys!" she says, smirking at me.
"Stop it, Roxie. It's not going to happen. N-O-T." I put my hands up like an 'X' in front of my face.
"Oh, come on. Why not?" She pouts.
"Because he's way out of my league. I'm sure I'm just another drooling female classmate to him." I sigh sadly.
"Aw, turn that frown upside down! I could see the sparkle in his eyes when he looks at you, Vi. I know he likes you!" I look at her and shake my head.
"If what you are saying is the truth then I hope he confesses to me soon. I'll probably die from a heart attack if I ever hear him say 'I like you' though." I pretend to be dead, and she laughs.
"Me too, sista! Au revoir!" she says just as the bell rings, signifying the end of our lunch.
We head to our separate classes. On Mondays, Roxie has French, and I have History after lunch. Kendall also has History after lunch, but this time he sits four seats to the upper left of the classroom away from me because some girls saved him a seat.
Sitting around me are two blonde girls I have never talked to and a guy named Earl who was staring at me the whole time. Kendall and I never talked after classes and didn't make eye contact during class either.
When I reach home, I get a message from Kendall.
Ken: Kendall Williams has changed Violet Peres' nickname to Vi.
Ken: Good evening, Violet. I look forward to our presentation tomorrow. I know we'll do great!
Awww! He's so well-mannered and optimistic. I wish he wasn't so way out of my league. Sigh, but it'll never happen. He'll never like me. All that is left is for us to do the presentation. After it passes, he won't be a distraction anymore, for he will never talk to me again.
Me: Good evening, Ken. Me too. I hope that's true...not that you'll do bad because you're great. I mean you're great at stuff like this. Ha...I'll see you tomorrow then, bye.
That was the most awkward message I've ever sent to Kendall! I shouldn't have pressed send!
Ken: Haha, thanks. Well, bye then. :)
Argh! Why does he have to be so darn cute?! Stop. Getting. Distracted! I smack myself repeatedly. I put away my phone and head downstairs for dinner. After eating a delicious meal of stew chicken and mash potatoes, I go take a bath in my black marble bathroom. Sinking into the warm water scented with rose bath oils and bubbles, my mind drifts away to dreamland.
Kendall is looking at me with the most heart-melting smile and glimmering eyes on his face. We're all alone in my bedroom, and he is holding my hand. His beautiful eyes staring into my soul. "I like you," he says, his face inches away from me. Then he says something else, but it doesn't quite get through. "Violet...Violet I...Violet! Violet!" he repeats.
All of a sudden, I hear a loud banging, and I come to. Dang, it was a dream! Aunt Carrie is outside banging on the door. "Violet! Are you in there? Please don't tell me you've drowned! Answer me!" she says sternly.
"Yes! Yes, I'm in here, and I'm all right, Aunt Carrie! Sorry for worrying you!" She leaves, and I quickly get out of the bath and go straight to bed. I can't believe I had that kind of dream. I've never dreamt of Kendall before. This is new. I hope I don't have any more of these dreams. I can't stay hung up on him just because we're partners for a project. The more I think about him the harder it is to forget about him. Tomorrow is the last day. You can do it, Violet!
