Chapter 3:Shopping

Last night, I didn't get any sleep at all; I couldn't sleep. I wasn't woken up by a nightmare like usual. I couldn't sleep because I stayed up thinking about what I said to Kendall. He must think I'm such a disgusting person, telling him I was in the bathtub. I've never told anyone I was taking a bath over a phone call. Well, except for Roxie, Owen and Aunt Carrie. I'm scared of seeing him on Monday now!

Anyways, I finally fell asleep around three in the morning. I decided to sleep in longer since it's Sunday. Unfortunately, someone keeps calling me, so I dreadfully drag my body out of bed to answer my phone. "What?" I answer groggily.

"Damn, girl! You're still sleepy? Have you not slept? Did you have a nightmare last night?"

"No, I didn't." I yawn.

"Then why do you sound like you've been awake for hours last night?" I slip back into my soft and cozy bed.

"Because I couldn't sleep, I kept thinking of Kendall! I still can't believe I told him I was taking a bath," I say, smacking my face.

"You what?! Wait, that isn't so bad," she comments.

I groan. "No, it IS bad! You don't tell a random male classmate, who for the record, doesn't know you, that you're in the bathroom taking a bath. I sound like I'm trying to get into his pants!" I groan even more.

"Calm down, Vi. Seriously, it's not that bad. He's just a person. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. Now, back to the topic of why I called. Get your lazy arse out of bed and meet me at the mall in ten. Love ya, bye!" She hangs up before I can even reply.

I roll around in my bed then put my face in my pillow and scream the living soul out of my body. I roll around some more until I accidentally roll off my bed and land on the floor with a thud. "What is going on up there, Violet?!" Carrie asks.

I quickly get to my feet and open my bedroom door. "Nothing, Aunt Carrie. Sorry!" I close the door and sigh heavily. Guess I'm going to the mall. I freshen up and pick out my outfit. My hair is let down into its natural, wavy state.

I decide to wear a light blue, tank top with a pair of black, ripped jeans and white sneakers. I accessorize my body with a small, key necklace and finish it off with a black wallet. I head downstairs where Owen and my aunt are watching a movie in the living room. "Aunt Carrie, I'm going out with Roxie." I take a slice of bread from a plate on the kitchen counter.

"Oh, okay. Have fun."

Owen turns around and shouts at me. "Hey! What about me? I'm here too, missy!" I chuckle and wave bye to him then leave. "So disrespectful." *Tsk, tsk* He sucks his teeth, and Aunt Carrie smacks him on the head.

"Shut up and watch the movie."

I take my slow time driving to the mall, so when I reach there, Roxie is rambling on about how she's been waiting for me for twenty minutes. To make her feel better, I treat her to some cake at her favorite shop inside the mall. "Let's go check out some costumes for Halloween, Vi," she says. Oh yeah, I forgot it's October already.

The month where everybody at our school is allowed to dress like nobody's watching, and no one will criticize you. "We should wear matching costumes, Vi! Then we could participate in the costume contest and win!" she exclaims. Oh yeah, there's also a costume contest, but I never participate in it. I somehow manage to bail out and convince Roxie that there is no need for people to judge how we look every year.

"I know we've never participated in the past years even though I said we will, but this year is going to be different, Vi. We're gonna rock in our costumes! I have the perfect idea for us!" she says with determination. Oh no, this time it's going to be harder to convince Roxie to not enter.

"Roxie, I don't think we should participate in the contest, it's stupid." She looks at me with a horrified expression on her face.

"WHAT. ARE. YOU. TALKING. ABOUT. VIOLET?!" She shakes me violently. "If we win, we could get five hundred dollars cash prize!" I slide out of her grip.

"Calm down, Roxie. I know, but what are the chances of us winning? The rich kids with their awesome customized costumes always win. Remember Rebecca Tureen won last year's contest with her holographic zombie princess costume and prince zombie charming, Cladd Montez, her boyfriend?" I say, and she shows me a face of disgust.

"Ugh, don't even remind me of her. I'm pretty sure the reason why they won was because Ms. Tureen's breasts were practically falling out with all the holes in her top, and Mr. Montez's toned body was shining in all its glory in his half-ripped shirt. Those votes were invalid I say, invalid!" she declares. You know, my Roxie could be a politician one day.

"Even if they were, what power did we have to stop them from winning? I'm pretty sure our principal's on their side since a bunch of the rich kid's parents donate to the school functions, and their moms try to seduce him," I remark. Without knowing it, Roxie had already lead me into a store selling costumes.

The cashier welcomes us, and Roxie drags me through the different sections packed with a variety of beautifully made costumes. She browses through the multi-colored unicorn jumpsuit, the black and white skeleton suit, the all-white angel dress, the all-red devil jumpsuit, the purple witch gown, the red, white and gold superwoman suit, the pretty, 50's girl outfit, the blue fairy mini dress with-...

WAIT! Was that a 50's outfit?! I push Roxie aside and pull it off the rack, admiring the cute, pink poodle skirt, the checkered, off-shoulder top, the black & white polka dot necktie and headband, and the white pumps.

"What the heck was that?! Did you find something you like, or did you try to stop me from seeing one of my exes?" Roxie is kind of weird and doesn't have many friends, but she has dated a few interesting guys before. She snatches the outfit from my hands and examines it. "Oh, so you like this one? Girl, I can totes see you rocking in this outfit. Oh, and it's for a pretty good price! If you'd like, I'll match with you for the contest." She gives me a goofy smile.

"For the last time, Roxie. We are not participating in the contest, please. I don't want to embarrass you or myself." I give her pleading eyes. "But, I am still going with this outfit."

She looks at me for some time and finally gives up. "Ugh, fine, but you better make up for it!" I pinky promise with her and smile.

"Or, if you want, you can participate by yourself. I'm sure you'll look good in your costume."

She puts her hand on her hip. "But it's no fun without you!" she whines.

"I'm still going to be there. Just not on the stage." I reassure her quickly.

"Fancy seeing you here, Roxanne and Violet." I hear a soothing voice behind me, and I see Roxanne covering her mouth with eyes wide open. I turn around to see Kendall in a black tee and jeans, but someone else is with him. To his right, holding his hand, was an adorable little brunette girl with rosy cheeks and beautiful, ocean blue eyes. She is smiling at me sweetly. I couldn't stop the 'aw' from coming out of my mouth.

"What are you doing here, Kendall?" Roxie speaks up.

"I'm looking for a costume outfit for this little cutie here." He looks down at her and smiles warmly. "What are you guys doing here?" Roxie asks and nudges me with her elbow.

"Um, uh, we're looking for a costume too...Is she your sister?" I ask.

"Oh, no. This here is my cousin, Elise. Say hi to Violet and Roxanne, Ellie." She looks at us and waves.

"Hello, Miss Violet and Miss Roxanne." She has the most adorable voice ever! I squat down and pet her head.

"So you guys are going to the party?" Kendall asks.

"Definitely!" Roxie answers cheerfully. "Are you going too?" she asks.

"Um, I might. I'll see what I can do." He smiles at me. I look away and blush immensely. "Oh right, Violet. We haven't started on the model for the project. We still need a few supplies to make it. I was just wondering if you'd like to go buy it with me since you're here too." I look at Roxie, and she nods.

"Sure, but what about Elise?" I look down at the cutie, who is looking up at Kendall.

"I'll look after her while you guys go shop." Roxie takes Elise's hand and smiles at me. Then, she also takes the outfit from my hands and winks.

"Are you sure? Are you okay with that, Ellie?" Kendall asks. They both smile and nod at him in sync.

"I guess that's alright then. Thank you very much, Roxanne."

"No problem, Kendall. Now, go do what you need to do, guys. Bye!" She pushes us out of the store, leaving us both laughing at her quick willingness to get rid of us.

. . .

We finish buying our materials and are walking back to the costume store where we left Roxie and Elise to find their costumes. "About your book, I didn't know I would meet you here today. I didn't bring it with me."

"It's totally fine. You could give it to me tomorrow," I comment. I'm sure my face is as red as a tomato now. I take a peek at Kendall and notice that his ears were extremely red. We must be thinking the same thing right now. Me in the bathtub is forever engraved into his mind. I'm sure I ruined his image of me. I rub my temples and sigh.

"Kenny!" I hear a cute little voice ahead of us. Roxie and Elise are sitting on a bench outside by the store with ice cream cones in their hands. Elise runs toward us with her ice cream stained face, and I can't help but giggle at it. "Look, Kenny! Miss Roxie bought me chocolate ice cream!" I look at Roxie and give her a thumbs-up, and she winks back at me. I take out a tissue and squat down to wipe Elise's messy and sticky mouth.

Kendall then scoops her up into his arms, "Say thank you to Miss Violet."

"Thank you, Miss Violet." She smiles at me.

"You're welcome, Ellie." I smile and pet her head.

Roxie walks over to us. "Elise has been a very good and patient girl while you guys were gone. She even decided on a costume she wanted." She hands the shopping bag to Kendall.

"Thanks again, Roxanne," he says, and she nods.

"Well, we have to head back now. Bye, Kendall!" Roxie pulls me by the arm, leading me to the exit. I wave goodbye to Kendall and Elise and watch their figures get smaller the further we walk away. "I paid for both our costumes. It was such a haul for these good costumes." Roxie says, and I chuckle.

"I'll pay you back for my outfit," I remark, and she gives me an 'of course you will' look.

"You're also going to tell me what you guys talked about while shopping," she says mischievously, and I roll my eyes at her.

"We didn't talk about anything interesting. I promise, if we did, I would've so told you already."

"Good girl!" We both laugh and head home.
