The Diner

Fate worked in mysterious ways; Katie knew that. She also had a sneaky suspicion that her ancestors played a very big meddling role in her life. Considering ever since the little run in in the hardware shop, Sam Uley seemed to be everywhere in Katie's life. Yes La Push was a small sized reservation in numbers but the ground area they owned was large enough, at least she thought it was, in order that she would not bump into him all the time. But she always seemed to see him about now. Every time she went grocery shopping, when she went for a walk along the beach, Sam was there. He was a few feet away and they did not always interact, but he was there.

He had also started to dance his way through her brain more often than not. Samuel Uley was two years younger than Katie, well closer to 18 months but that wasn't the important piece to take away. He was 18 just fresh out of high school and despite two years not being a lot, it still felt very strange for her to have such a fascination regarding him. He was barely into his adult years, months if that and she was a few years into her own. It felt like a massive difference, she should not have felt this strange attraction the more she saw him. But she did, and it grossed her out.

She also barely knew him as a person, she knew of him. After all the age gap had been small enough that they had gone to school together so she had known a little bit about him from around then. It was also the thing with living in such a small tightly knit community, everyone knew everyone and everyone knew everyone else's business. She knew much more about him from her gossiping neighbours then she probably would have following one sit down dinner. In fact she had got most of her information about him the last couple of weeks from attending the hairdresser or even just being around the older ladies of the tribe. Because if there was a group who loved to gossip the most it would be the older ladies and mothers of the tribe, especially when caught in the very tiny hairdressers salon.

Therefore, when she walked into Harry's diner, the only one on the reservation which was a very popular spot, her eyes noticed him immediately. It was embarrassing how quickly her eyes found his in the room, how she paused for a moment to properly look at him before her attention was drawn away by the familiar voice of Harry himself who stood behind the counter.

"Officer Mitchell, come on in from the rain you look soaked." Harry's voice drew her attention back to the main part of the diner and just how busy it was. The weather outside was miserable, stormy and Katie had been soaked as she walked the minuscule distance from her parked car to the front door of the diner. Every booth was filled, and there seemed to only be one or two seats available on the bench left. And seeing who else was sat at the bench, Katie realised she might just have to order to go because she would rather sit and eat in her car than between the two creepy looking old men at the bench.

She placed her order, knowing it was all for show considering she never really ordered anything else when she stopped for her dinner at the diner. Harry only beamed and nodded along as he pretended to write the order down, the ticket having already been filled in the moment she had walked through the door. A cup of coffee was slid across the counter and Katie resolved to just standing there waiting awkwardly for her food whilst sipping the drink trying to avoid the eyes of the men around her.

A hand waving in the corner of her eye drew Katie's attention back to the person who had caught it when she walked through the door. She turned to properly look at Sam again noting he was indeed waving in her direction, before turning the wave into a beckoning one. And if there was one thing Katie knew she could not do was ignore that gesture. She needed to know what he wanted her for. Therefore, she approached the booth he currently sat in alone and waited to see what he had to say.

"Do you want to join me, Officer?" The way Sam spoke the word Officer was taunting, recalling clearly the way she had told him to not call her by the role but her name.

"I'd never want to intrude on your incredibly big party you've got here." Katie responded a nod to the fact that he seemed to be eating alone.

"We've got extra space for one more." And with those words, Katie did not exactly take a seat but a natural conversation formed and the pair spoke long enough that both of their meals were brought to the table.

Katie could only remain confused regarding just what kind of role Sam Uley was beginning to play in her life the longer they spent in the diner that night. Meals had been finished a long time ago, yet neither of them made an effort to move or leave. The more the younger man spoke the more Katie found herself trapped in the allure that was everything about him. It was something she knew she would be looking back upon with a careful eye, everything that had occurred she would look back over. But for the moment she let her self be entrapped by him. The way she knew their connection hadn't quite been instant but the way it had built didn't feel forced either. Things felt natural despite the way it felt like fate was pushing them closer and closer. And she could only hope he was feeling the same way she was. That feelings were not exactly there but it was not like there was no chance for them to develop. Because she had a strong feeling that they would.

"Can I walk you to your car?" Sam asked taking note not only of the time, but how dark it was outside. Katie had little to fear from the surrounding community, sure she may have been a police officer and knew that not everyone liked them. She did not blame them either, she knew what some people did when it came to abusing the power their roles provided them with. But she felt as though the community at least accepted her. But she accepted irregardless thinking probably it would be the only way to end whatever the night had turned into.

"Yeah of course." Katie wanted to kick herself for how the words had come out, how she sounded like she was a lovestruck 16 year old girl. But it was too late to take them back. Rather she walked silently by his side the very small distance from the front doors of the diner to the truck she drove around. The weather having cleared up slightly in the time she had been inside.

"Goodnight Sam."

"Goodnight Katie."

And as she drove away he remained on her brain for the rest of her night.
