Kiki's POV

"Light! Stop running ahead, you know I'm not as fast," I call to him. He stops and smiles at me as I catch up to him.

"You're getting better at running, plus we both know this is the only exercise you get." he says.

        "True," I say.

"And if we don't hurry we'll be late for school," he adds.

"School doesn't even start for another half hour! We have no need to rush," I say.

"It doesn't hurt to get to school early, though we should stop by a cafe and coffee shop because you, young lady, skipped dinner last night and breakfast this morning," Light says.

"Fine." I say with a sigh. We head to a café a few blocks away from the school that has a lot of sweets, which I love.

We went in and Light went off to sit at a booth. I went to stand in the short line. There was only one person in front of me and he was looking at the cakes. "I recommend the vanilla with cream cheese frosting," I say a bit quietly. He turns around to look at me. He stands slouched in a baggy white shirt and jeans with untied vans on, his black hair a mess and his black eyes staring into mine.

"You do? I've never been here before," he says.

"Yeah, it comes with strawberries on it too. I think they make it the best here," I say a bit shyly. I'm horrible with people.

"Hm. You seem familiar, have we met before?" He asks.

        "No," I answer.

"Interesting," he says and turns around and orders a slice of vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting with a strawberry and steps to the side so I can order.

"Um, a small caramel Frappuccino and a blueberry muffin please," I say.

"That will be 562.18 yen," she says and I pay. The guy who was in front of me has just gotten his cake and looks at me when I step to the side. (I don't have the yen symbol on my laptop)

"Do you mind me asking your name?"  He asks.

        "I'm Kiki. You?" I ask.

"My name is Ryuzaki. It was nice meeting you Kiki," Ryuzaki

"It was nice meeting you too Ryuzaki. Maybe I'll see you around," I say with a smile and he nods. I get my drink and muffin and go sit with Light.

"Who were you talking to?" He asks and I shrug.

"Some nice goy named Ryuzaki," I say and take a sip of my Frappuccino.

"You shouldn't talk to strangers Kiki," Light says.

"Oh, calm down I just recommend what kind of cake is the best and that was pretty much it. He didn't seem like the type who gets out much though. You should have seen how pale he was, it was like he had never spent time out in the sun," I say.

        "Still," he says.

"Fine, but you're way too over protective," I say.

"I just want to make sure my little sister is okay," He says smiling.

"Light I am three months younger. Three. Fucking . Months," I say.

"You're still younger though," He says and I pout, narrowing my eyes at him making him chuckle.

"Fine. I may be younger but I'm also smarter," I say.

"No way, we are both equally smart," he says.

"Nuh uh, I'm smarter. We may get the same grades, but my IQ is 5 points higher than yours, remember?" I say. He smiles.

"Well you got me there Kiki, let's go." He says and I gram my Frappuccino and muffin and we leave. It doesn't take long to get to school, where we have to go our separate ways for the next 7 hours. We hug goodbye and I walk to my class and seat myself in the back row. I silently stare off into space until some one taps my shoulder. I jump and look over at them, it's a boy named Michael. He and his family moved here from the states a few years ago, he has constantly picked on me and bullied me since.

        "Hey nerd," he says.

"Please go away," I say in a whisper.

"Aw, does wittle Kiki want to be left alone?" He asks. I just nod, looking at my desk.

"I have the courage of a cornflake please go away," I whisper. he laughs.

"You've become so boring over the years. You can't even look at me now, how pathetic," he says with a smirk. "No wonder you have no friends. You can't do anything right," he says.

"So? What's your point? Why do you have to point that out everyday?" I ask.

"Because I can and I find it fun," he says and walks away to his seat. I lay my head on my desk with a sigh. I can't wait for it to be lunch.

The teacher walks in and starts going on about maths. Lucky for me maths is my best class, I've had a perfect 100 the whole year. After three work sheets and taking down notes the bell rings for class to be over and I go to my next class, history, then science, finally during science it's lunch time. I go to a corner of the library and take out my phone and call up a... friend?

"L, it's me." I say when he picks up. While I've never met him in real life I often work with him on cases over the phone. Neither of us know what the other looks like, nor what we really sound like.

"Key, hello," he says. Both of us use voice modifiers and we don't even try to track the other one down.

"Have you started the Kira case yet? It's blowing up the internet," I say.

"Yes, but I don't want you working on this one with me," he says.

        "What?! Why?!" I ask.

"This is going to be quite the case. I can tell it will be very dangerous," he says.

"Then let me help you solve it," I plead.

"No, Kira is a very capable enemy. I know that already and I don't want you getting hurt in this. I've told Watari that if something in to happen to me then you are to replace me. I can allow there to be a chance of us both dying on a case," he insists.

"Fine, I'll work on it by myself," I say.

"Key, don't. I'm trying to protect you," he says.

"I can protect myself. I don't need you to baby me," I say and take out my laptop. I'll trace the call and meet L. I will not stand for this. I have work with him since I was 10 years old and never has he said I can't help him with a case.

"Key, I'm just trying to keep you safe," he repeats.

"L, you remember why I go by key don't you?" Silence. "I go by key because the answer to a crime is locked, but I unlock the answer. Let me unlock the mysteries and secrets to this crime."

"No, it's just too dangerous," he says. I sigh as my laptop beeps. I found him. He's at a hotel in the city. Perfect!

"Fine. Goodbye L," I say and hang up. I write down the address and pack up my laptop into my bag and sing it over my shoulder. I can't wait for school to be over, he might be somewhere else then. Lunch is another hour so I should be fine. I quickly leave and take a taxi to the address. It only takes 10 minutes to get there and I pay the driver before rushing inside. Lucky for me I see Watari in the lobby. "Watari!" I say and go over to him. I met him once, only so L could know I wasn't going to stab him in the back or whatever. Watari swore to me not to tell what I looked like to L. Back then I was 12

"My, is that you Key?" Watari asks. I smile a little.

"Yeah. I...I need to talk to L. In person," I say.

        "Why is that?" He asks.

"He refuses to let me work with him on this case. I've been working with him for about 7 years now, I'm not going to let him just kick me off this case," I say

"Well it sounds like you have a valid argument. After 6 years I believe it's time for you to meet in person anyways." He says and we go up to the hotel room. L, not even looking up from his computer stars speaking to Watari.

"Watari we need to switch hotels, it seems like someone has tracked where we are," he says.

"Ah, that's how you found us," Watari says to me and I nod. L looks familiar from the back, but how?

"Watari who are you talking to?" L asks and turns around.

"You," We say in unison. L is the guy from the café?

"Hm. How unexpected," he says and walks over to me and holds out his hand, the other in his jeans pocket. "Hello Kiki," he says and I shake his hand. I feel at such a disadvantage now. He knows my name and I still don't know his.

"Hello L," I say and shake his hand.

"You seem stiff, almost nervous. Why?" He asks going back to his laptop.

"I'm at a disadvantage now. You know my really name, but I still don't know yours," I say.

"Well I guess it is only fair if I tell you mine. You have to promise never to use it though, no matter what no one can know. Do you understand?" He says and I nod. "My mane is L Lawliet. You, Kiki Yagami, must keep that a secret."
