S2 - Ch.13 - Memory of Toland, the Shattered

The air breezed into the girl's face, Kara had her eyes closed as a smile was at the edge of her lips, the wind guiding her cape up and making it flow along with her skirt and golden locks, the sun shined brightly in the morning, almost afternoon, sky as she felt all energetic, letting the warmth of the sun soak into her skin that showed.

She listened for the calming sounds of the city, hearing a banjo being played by a citizen of the Last City, birds chirping while perched on trees, the sound of the wind all around her, she felt herself at peace.

She thought about the people that were close to her, the friends she made here and back home on her Earth, she still couldn't believe it had been a year since she arrived to Earth, at least her Earth that is, and within that time, she had reunited with her cousin, albeit he was now middle-aged now and not the baby cousin she knew him as, and then had met her first Earth friend but became her boyfriend months later, the Guardian -- Zain -- aka Y/N.

She kept her smile going, thinking back on what she had been through all the way up to this point, ignoring the bad that has happened in her life within the past year.

She began to think back on this morning however, much to her surprise, she had woken up without him beside her in bed, which had dumbfounded her. At first; she thought he went out to the Tower for something important, or had gone patrolling on the Moon or another location. But the second thought; she had thought he went into the City grounds for something, the Guardian came back through the front door after she heard a ship outside the house. He came back with some papers, papers that were a stained yellow from a Tea bag, and a journal.

This journal intrigued Kara but she wondered where he went, soon getting her answer as to why he was on the Moon after all, after getting confirmation from Glace herself.

The journal belonged to the man who was obsessed with the Hive and the Darkness as a whole. Toland, the Shattered himself, the journal was his and had only been rediscovered after Y/N went to investigate alone after meeting Eris since she had a hunch on the Hive performing rituals that were too familiar to what is called, the "Deathsong".

Surprised by this, Kara opted to continue the investigation, she had already put on her cape within a millisecond before Y/N stopped her, he vowed to put all the missing pages into place within Toland's journal, knowing Eris would take an interest in reading it to better understand what Toland might have found in his... Quest for power, which would lead to his downfall, along with his Ghosts' who conspired with Toland about it all reportedly and according to Eris also.

And now... It all leads to Supergirl, levitating in the air with nothing but a little smile on her face, with the wind hitting her face gently as it swept her cape all around like her golden aura that is her hair.

She turned herself around in a 180 degree angle and began to fly back to the household Y/N now shared with her, thinking it would be enough sun-bathing for a day above the Last City. Her arms were extended out as she soared through the sky, clenching both her fists as she picked up some speed with her flying, leaving behind a little blurry streak of red and yellow.

She picked up her boyfriend's heartbeat within the shared household as a little smile drew across her face, detecting he was still within the household.

"So... He did know" she soon heard his Ghost speak, sounding shocked to put it. Which then made Kara frown as she began to descend from the sky like a slow moving projectile.

"I'm not surprised at the slightest" Y/N's voice soon entered the fray, sounding not as surprised as Glace, his tone showing to be unamused. "Funny we interacted with him before we came back, it's no wonder why he's shown himself on our Moon".

Kara Zor-El had soon fully descended down onto the little pavement, kneeling down to pat Colonel, the Chicken who was laying outside on the grass that was separated from the fencing.

The chicken clucked in Kara's presence as she gave her a few more pets before standing straight up again to walk through the front door.

The door left off a sound of a bell once Kara opened it and closed it as she stepped in, alerting Y/N of her arrival.

"How was the sun-bathing?!" he shouted from his little office.

"You don't need to shout, I can hear you with my super hearing" Kara responded as she was already walking over to see him in his little office. "For your question however, it was great, like any other day I sun-bathe" the golden girl leaned on the arch of the door, crossing her arms with a little smirk playing across her face.

"From what I recount, don't you do it near the sun?" Glace asked the Girl of Steel who stood at the doorway after leaning on it.

"Most of the time, but not this time around, like I said earlier before I left" she smiled and answered, now walking in to approach her boyfriend.

She kept her eyes on him, getting behind him while he sat on the chair, the girl stood behind and over him as she placed her hands on his shoulders, he flinched a little from her touch but soon relaxed. "Overheard Glace mentioning that our little orb friend knew something on the Moon, what was it?" she asked him and kissed him on top of the head while giving him a little massage.

"About the Pyramid" Y/N answered, which almost shook Kara to her core.

"Wait... He knew??" she asked with her eyebrows frowning, sounding shocked. "Why didn't he say anything?".

"Because he kept it to himself, even his Ghost did the same" Y/N pushed his index finger onto the piece of writing on the journal, Kara took notice and began to read it herself.

"'From what I discovered, the sole reason why the Hive had festered themselves onto the Moon, why they claimed the Moon for themselves. The primate of their power which could be from the black edge of this behemoth of a temple, no... More than a temple, more than just a pyramidal temple, could it be a vessel? A ship? Something of power the Hive have took from this blackened edge of a vessel? Could this be the Darkness that caused the Collapse all those years ago?'..." the Maid of Might took a sharp breath for a moment, thoughts ran through her head about this discovery, not even she could believe it as she thought back on it to give it a re-read again.

"That perfectly describes the Pyramid to you, doesn't it?" Y/N asked with a serious note as Kara's eyes skimmed the words in the journal's many pieces of paper yet again.

"I... Y-Yeah, 'pyramidal, vessel, ship', yeah that describes it" she answered a few seconds after skimming through it quickly. She felt sick to her stomach about it.

"I suppose we should get this to Eris, she'll need this".

"Agreed".

[Earth-201499 | The Moon | Enduring Abyss, Refuge]

Eris Morn looked down to the table as a Phantom was levitating in front of her, over the table as she looked down in a little bit of frustration, trying to piece something together on what she had just discovered, something that could give her allies more understanding of the Darkness itself.

She laid bare with a frustrated look. "They have no worms... how do they commune with the Darkness?" she asked, trying to figure out what the main piece she was missing to figuring out the answer or at least the truth in that matter.

The Phantom that overlooked her let out a mocking shriek before Eris looked up at the Phantom that represented a fake Toland and she couldn't be bothered dealing with its mockery. "DO NOT mock me!" she snapped, slamming her fist onto the table with all the memorabilia that was returned to her by the Guardian and Supergirl's efforts. "Toland is not the only one capable of understanding the enemy!" she continued her wording to the Phantom before hearing footsteps from her right.

From there, she turned to face the arrival of Y/N and Kara, holding a familiar journal in his hand as Eris caught a glimpse of it upon closer inspection.

"Eris, sorry for not coming back sooner. I found this while you told me to investigate the recent Hive ritual activity, along with the missing pages that were scattered across the Moon during my patrol" he handed over the lost journal of Toland, the Shattered. A surprise to Eris since it was one of many missing journals; Toland carried with him.

"That... is one of Toland's lost journals... I have never laid eyes upon it" Eris politely took the journal as the Phantom of Toland soon vanished out of sight, leaving only two Phantoms left to deal with in time. "Thank you for being here. For going where I could not" Eris laid her thanks towards the couple before drifting off in thought.

Her eyes examine the journal, a curiosity burning in her to give it a read, to see what knowledge Toland had left to better understand the enemy, he always had knowledge, and still has.

Though he particularly plays loops and holes about it...

"There's something else you should know" Kara brought to Eris's attention, gaining the Tainted Witch's eyes toward the group.

"Toland... he knew about the Pyramid... it says it in his journal, all the details toward it proves otherwise" Y/N told the former Hunter who in turn looked at the Pyramid with a disappointed gaze.

"So he knew... He knew about the Pyramid's existence here. And said nothing" Eris said with a distaste for Toland's actions, perhaps if they had known earlier? Maybe her Fireteam could still be here, an immediate pullback could've prevented their deaths. "I should not miss Toland. His ruthless pursuit of knowledge led to his downfall".

"And now he's a spirit, still alive but without a physical body" Y/N noted. "I do wonder... What killed him?".

"He wasn't merely killed" Eris soon answered. "Ir Yût had destroyed his body with her Deathsong, in his words. 'the Deathsong redefined' him, enabling his consciousness to survive as an Ascendant soul, buoyed by the Ascendant Plane".

"Who told you that?" Kara asked next, making Eris look at her for a mere moment.

"Toland himself" Eris soon answered before looking back down at the table, examining the journal still while setting aside her previous work. "He decided to visit me here on the Moon, he told me you saw him in the Dreaming City, Guardian".

"Of course he did, he was everywhere".

"His curiosity makes him predictable, I knew he could not resist a marvel like the Queen's Eleusinia, though he is a spirit now, his pursuit of knowledge continues. He has also told me he guided you throughout the Ascendant Plane, as he saw fit that you had proved yourself to him" Eris continued, telling more of what Toland had to say before finishing her examination of the lost journal. "Perhaps this journal could help better understand what he had found and kept to himself. Come see me when you are ready, I have a task for you both that must be dealt with"...

[Lore: Unveiling | The Darkness]

The Flower Game

These are the rules of a game. Let it be played upon an infinite two-dimensional grid of flowers.

Rule One. A living flower with less than two living neighbors is cut off. It dies.

Rule Two. A living flower with two or three living neighbors is connected. It lives.

Rule Three. A living flower with more than three living neighbors is starved and overcrowded. It dies.

Rule Four. A dead flower with exactly three living neighbors is reborn. It springs back to life.

The only play permitted in the game is the arrangement of the initial flowers.

This game fascinates kings. This game occupies the very emperors of thought. Though it has only four rules, and the board is a flat featureless grid, in it you will find changeless blocks, stoic as iron, and beacons and whirling pulsars, as well as gliders that soar out to infinity, and patterns that lay eggs and spawn other patterns, and living cells that replicate themselves wholly. In it, you may construct a universal computer with the power to simulate, very slowly, any other computer imaginable and thus simulate whole realities, including nested copies of the flower game itself. And the game is undecidable. No one can predict exactly how the game will play out except by playing it.

And yet this game is nothing compared to the game played by the gardener and the winnower. It resembles that game as a seed does a flower—no, as a seed resembles the star that fed the flower and all the life that made it.

In their game, the gardener and the winnower discovered shapes of possibility. They foresaw bodies and civilizations, minds and cognitions, qualia and suffering. They learned the rules that governed which patterns would flourish in the game, and which would dwindle.

They learned those rules, because they were those rules.

And in time the gardener became vexed.
