Twenty Eight: Return To Leave
I kicked the lizard in the face and it retracted for a moment, before its tongue shot out and wrapped around Orion.
I took the dagger I keep in my boot out and sliced his thin tongue in half. The creature screamed and blood sprayed across my uniformed torso.
With a swift kick to the side of its head, the lizard went flying over to the tree.
Suddenly, Miss Martian’s voice filled my head. “Link established.”
I began to listen to what they were saying, when the lizard got back up and began stalking towards me. I ignored the conversation going on when another two lizards emerged behind the one I had already beat up.
“Bring it on!” I readied three fists of mana, before I remembered that it was just Conner and I. Closing my eyes, I thought of the spell.
If I concentrate hard enough, I know I don’t need the singing. Plus I cast this one all the time. It’s the one I always used as Midnight.
“Evig em eht anam fo eht thgindim!” I felt a surge of power rush down my arms. When I shot discs at the lizards, they were not their natural green. They were green with purple electricity cracking around them.
It instantly electrocuted the enemy and took out their collars. Once those were gone, the animals returned to normal and walked away.
I took out the first two, and several more walked out. Fantastic, I’m facing a lizard family.
‘Superboy? Star? Are you two offline or just pouting?’ M'gann asked us.
‘We’re busy!’ Conner yelled, struggling with the wolf on top of him.
‘Yeah, call back late-Conner watch out!’ The biggest lizard jumped off the cliff overhead. Before it could land on Superboy and the wolf I created a shield.
When it made contact, the collar buzzed off and the lizard went back to normal. Something jumped on my back. Another lizard.
I zapped him and he returned to normal. The process continued for a while. I took out the rest of the lizards’ collars…all but one. The one I injured first.
‘Star, Superboy. We have a plan. Hana lock onto Robin’s location and follow. We’ll call you in for help when it is needed,” M'gann said.
I opened my computer and found Robin on the map.
Before I could speak, I realised the last lizard was nuzzling his fallen tongue. I approached him slowly, reached out and snapped his collar off.
It didn’t seem to effect him. Instead, he stared at his tongue mournfully. I hummed and sung. “Xif sin eugnot.”
The tongue sealed itself back on and the lizard looked up at me with a strange expression. I stepped back from him and began walking to Superboy.
“Let’s-“ He was intimately patting his previous enemy like a puppy. I smirked at him.
“Don’t give me that look. Looks like you made a friend too.” I realised that behind me, the lizard waited obediently.
Orion perched his eagle form on my shoulder, so I kneeled down and held my hand out to the lizard. Immediately he came forward.
“Hey their big guy,” I grinned, before scooping him up in my arms. “Follow me,” I told Conner.
We began travelling south, until we found this giant building. My computer told me Robin was inside.
I placed my lizard on the ground. “Edecer eht thgindim anam,” I sang, feeling the Midnight mana leave. I felt better after that. My gaze travelled to the lizard. Kobra venom may have done some good, but still…I hummed and recited.
“Evig eht drazil erif htaerb.” Lizard didn’t react.
‘Now!’ M'gann yelled in my head.
Connor punched the wall and it broke apart. When it did, the team were clumped together in one corner. The wolf and my lizard ran in.
The gorilla was faced with fire breath and wolf claws. KF attacked, so I followed his example and whipped the beast in the leg, dragging him down.
The team continued attacking until we surrounded The Brain and Guerilla Gorilla.
“Try it. I hate monkeys,” Conner growled from beside me. The lizard agreed with him, coughing flames.
Red contraptions began emerging from The Brain’s robot body. A bomb!?
“Get down!” KF yelled. I pulled Orion down with me and…the lights went out.
Well then.
The lizard followed me as we returned to the Bio-Ship, so naturally, what decision did I make?
“I’m keeping him!” I announced to the team, lifting the lizard up. It stared back at me and licked its lips. I jumped onto Orion’s bat back.
Then I grabbed the lizard by the stomach and lifted him above my head. He breathed out a cloud of flames.
“Together, we’ll make an unstoppable trio!” I announced to the world.
~
When we got back to the ship, the awkwardness in the air was clear as day.
"What are you going to name him?" Superboy asked.
"Um...Drazil! Lizard backwards!" I smiled. The look he gave me was one of 'tell-them-the-truth-or-you'll-never-drink-tea-again.
I stared back at him with innocent eyes.
"Um, you guys?" Artemis said. Conner and I looked up to see the group giving us suspicious looks, M'gann and Robin in particular.
"Drazil, Orion, come on," I said, walking aboard the ship. I sat in my seat. Drazil put his head in my lap and lizard-growled up at me.
"You're a cutie pie huh?" I smiled. He just stared at me. The team didn't come aboard and I became restless like a little child.
I jumped up and walked to the door of the bio-ship.
"Are we going or what?" I asked, but spotted something coming up being the team. "Drazil!" I called out. I heard the super-sized lizard walk to my side.
The team cleared away in surprise as a lizard slightly smaller than Drazil, and three a quarter of Drazil's size stopped at the bio-ships door.
"Aww! A family!" I cooed, kneeling down to them all.
"I think I've find my first pets for the sanctuary!"
~
When we got home, Batman, Canary, John and Martian Manhunter were surprised as I sprinted out of the hangar with a family of Lizards behind me.
"I'm so excited!" I yelled, doing a hand-spring before I kept on running to the sanctuary. I slowed down and opened the gate.
Drazil, his wife Lizzy, their three children Drazil Jr, Lana and Brock went to explore the sanctuary. I went in and sat by the waterfall in the middle of the room, concealed by trees.
"Hana?" I heard Robin's voice. I stayed quiet. I don't want another fight,
Sadly he found me. My eyes stayed glued to the table. I was worried he was angry after what I said to him. Calling the others children would have upset them.
"I'm sorry," I said quietly. This surprised him.
"Sorry? Hana, you have no reason to be sorry," he sat on the bench beside me. "It's me who should be sorry. Aqualad was right to not tell us...and you were right to stick up for him. I'm proud of you," he smiled through his mask, before taking it off.
"Thank you. I'm proud of you for admitting it," I smiled.
"Hey, how about you come to my house? I mean, I am constantly in your home, aren't I? You should come to mine."
"Sure. When?"
"Now."
"Now? Dick it's late-"
"Yeah, so sleep over. Then I'll take you shopping in Gotham for shoes and you can eat all the croissants you like. I'll even buy you a puppy."
I grinned at his proposal. Sneaky. Using things I love against me. Then I remembered what he said.
"Fine, but you don't by puppies from pet shops, you rescue them from pounds, okay?" I grinned.
"Alright," he smiled, before he leaned forward and kissed me. When I went to run my fingers through his hair, my ring started beeping.
"Not now!" I groaned, pulling it into my view. I pressed the top of the ring and the Vice Guardian of the Universe appeared.
"Milady," I bowed to it. She nodded back. When she didn't speak, I realised she was glaring at Robin.
"I'll talk to you in a sec," I told him. He smiled and left.
"Emerald Star. Let me begin by giving my condolences. Laurel Destiny's death was a sad one," she said. I smiled and thanked her.
"Will the new Laurel Destiny be a sufficient replacement?"
"Yes milady. However, as I was, she is young. I have been training her, however I must ask that she not be called to duty yet. Her mind is immature and her skills are not yet sufficient."
I sounded so nerdy when I spoke to these guys.
"Of course. We will leave this judgment to you. Onto further matters, you have an assignment." Damn. "Report to Oa."
Then she disappeared.
I left the middle of the sanctuary to see the team welcoming my new friends. They looked up and noticed my annoyed expression.
"What is it?" Robin asked, coming to my side. I sighed heavily.
"I have a mission," I said sadly. The team seemed to realise what was happening, and left.
Robin looked upset, so I hugged him tightly. "It might be a short one...it might not. But when I get back we can go to your house," I said.
I leaned back to look at him, keeping my arms around his neck with his arms around my waist. "Okay?" I smiled at him.
He had no reaction...well I couldn't really tell, he had his mask back on. I reached up and took it off, then kissed him. Please react, please react, please react.
I smiled when he kissed me back. A minute later I pulled away and smiled at him. "I'll miss you," I smiled, kissing his cheek. I put his mask back on.
Turning around, I began walking away. Robin kept a tight grip on my hand.
"Be careful," he told me. I smiled back at him, suddenly realising how catastrophic it will be when he finds out who I am...or was.
"I'm a star, remember? Space is my turf."
~
So here's the thing I realised the other day.
I don't really have any experience writing as a character like Hanabrie. She's very sweet, excited and involved. My characters tend to be broody, strong minded meanies. It makes me happy.
ON THAT NOTE. She is absolutely adorable. And she's had some pretty weird one liners, so have the rest of the team.
So I want to know.
Any favourites? Mine is in chapter seventeen;
"You can never have too many socks." ~ Hanabrie Shiloh to Wally West.
Stay magical! - Kaido.
