Shenanigans of St. Patrick's Day
So, I found a prompt on Instagram that I thought would probably fit for something like this and I don't normally use prompts when it comes to writing because I always seem to have an abundance of inspiration but here we are. This one is a Modern AU and doesn't really fit into the timeline....anywhere. This is another one of my random ones that I throw in there for humor's sake. All of the female OCs are in (as in the boys have met them, they may or may not appear in this oneshot). I'll tag you lovely people who have allowed characters maybe at the end. Just know that Katie (BeckyMerari's character), Falcon(RunnerWeirdo's character), and Pups(23gatkins' character) are not my OCs. I have just been allowed use of them for this book but they are not really mine. I own Flavi and Elley (who I'm pretty sure you will meet here if you haven't met them previously. They're very good at getting into shenanigans.) I'm going to state what the prompt was and then I'll get into it.
"You really think that this will work?"
"No, not at all."
"Then why the heck are we doing it?"
"It sounded fun."
"We're all gonna die."
This was by ModKatie on Instagram if anybody knows who that is. I'm just giving credit where credit is due. :) And now, onto the oneshot.
If you're a big fan of the Newsies and you read the prompt, you already know where this is going. I'm sorry and your welcome???
Racetrack Higgins has an idea.
His closest female friend, Flavi would tell him that that was dangerous and she certainly wasn't wrong. She just hasn't heard the idea yet. He could maybe rope her into doing it with him. Racetrack could be very persuasive when he wanted to be. If he couldn't get Flavi to do it, which means it's pretty bad because Race gets Flavi to do a lot of things she wouldn't normally do, Elley would be good for it. Being Jack's young sister gives you some rights to get into some amount of trouble and cause your own fair share yourself.
Or really any of the guys was always good for a prank but this time, the smaller the audience, the more effective the prank would be. He could ask Falcon to do it with him. His sister was always good for mischief.
The date is March 17th at roughly 1:30 AM. Race stays up most of this night every year preparing for St. Patrick's Day. Every year, he feels the need to turn Albert into a leprechaun in some form or fashion. Nobody ever really wants to help him out with that part. The first Race does is knock three time softly on the wall next to him. He waits for a few seconds and listens for the sound of a door opening a little ways down the hall. Race then walks to his own door and opens it. Flavi stands there in a hoodie and flannel pajama pants with her arms crossed.
"Hi," Race says cheerfully but quietly.
"Why did I let you talk me into this? This is a terrible idea," Flavi whispers, trying not to look Race in the eyes.
"Because you love me," Race replies nonchalantly, taking Flavi's shoulders and turning her towards him. Flavi's eyes widens and her gaze flicks from the floor to Race's hands on her shoulders.
"I'm going to go make sure that nobody else is awake who wants to do this," Flavi says quickly hurrying shyly towards the girl's apartment next door. The girls live in a separate apartment next to the boys. Race and Flavi's rooms are adjacent which is why he can knock on the wall late at night. Race resists the urge to sigh. He really really likes Flavi. They've been best friends for a long time and he wants her as more than just a friend. Lately, he's been trying to get that message across. He's a little nervous that he's stressing Flavi out with it. She's not a very forward person and she's really shy. He just hopes that he doesn't do something that's going to hinder their future together. Race gets lost enough in his thoughts that he doesn't hear the door open behind him.
"Race? What are you doing up?" a small voice asks and Race jumps, turning to see Romeo standing behind him.
"Shhhhhh," Race shushes quickly and Romeo raises an eyebrow.
"It's 1:30 in the morning and..."Romeo starts quietly but Race cuts him off,
"It's St. Patrick's Day! Now go to sleep!" The door creaks open a little further than when Romeo had left it cracked and a small kitten wanders out.
"Hi, Patches!" Romeo whispers, scooping her up into his arms and placing her on Race's shoulder. Patches rubs her head against Race's face and chirps at one of her favorite humans. Race rubs her head affectionately, getting another small squeak out of the small cat. A few minutes later, Flavi reappears with a pair of black leggings on her legs, a pair of green fuzzy socks on her feet and a black hoodie with the hood pulled up. None of the girls to both boys' surprise were following her.
"No one else wanted to come. Elley acted remotely interested but then she fell back asleep. Falcon didn't even move when I poked her and I figured Katie probably wouldn't want to just because she's sweet. Pups was also out cold," Flavi explains at the shocked look on both of the boys faces. Race is too busy staring at the way the leggings fit Flavi's legs to really pay attention to anything she is saying.
"Race, you ready?" Romeo asks and Race comes out of his gazing.
"Huh?" Race asks. Flavi meets Race's gaze and shakes her head.
"Quit staring, prankmaster. We have a lot of work to do and Crutchie ALWAYS gets up at the crack of dawn so we really don't have a whole lot of time," Flavi reprimands playfully before turning on her heel and walking into the apartment space. Race stares after her and Romeo nudges him in the shoulder.
"You know, if your whole thing with Flavi doesn't work out, I'm sure Patches would love to..."he starts and Race shoves him into the apartment.
"I ain't looking to start a relationship with a cat," he responds and Romeo nearly crashes into Flavi.
"Sorry," Romeo hisses quietly as Flavi looks at him worriedly, "You almost shoved me into your girlfriend, Higgins."
"Girlfriend? Romeo, Race and I are only friends," Flavi replies, helping Romeo onto his feet before looking for the green glitter stash that Race has hidden for this very occasion. Race enters the apartment with Patches still on his shoulder and quietly closes the door behind him. He bumps into Flavi again and butterflies erupt in both of their stomachs.
"Sorry," Race whispers quietly while moving to help her find the green glitter stash. Race opens the junk drawer that the boys have and reaches into the very back. He pulls out a gallon sized Ziploc bag full of green glitter. Flavi's eyes widen at the sight.
"Why in the world would you keep so much glitter?" Flavi whispers quietly. Race beams at her and Patches reaches over to paw at the bag of sparkly shiny things.
"Why do you think?" Race asks with a smirk before running off with the bag of glitter to the cabinet that holds all of the cereal boxes. Opening the top of the box, Race pours glitter around the bag that holds the cereal and does it a little extra to Albert's box of Lucky Charms that have Albert's name specifically written on the top. He winks at Flavi before silently putting it back in the cabinet.
"We are going to get it," Flavi whispers as Race offers her the glitter. Both of them reach their hands in at the same time and their hands bump causing Flavi to pull away quickly. Glitter falls out of her hand as she moves away from Race. Race smirks at her and grabs her wrist, pulling her back closer to him.
"Yeah? So?" he asks. Flavi gently moves her hand out of Race's grasp much to Race's chagrin.
"What's the fun in that if you know we're going to get caught? We might as well go glitter bomb Spot Conlon's apartment in Brooklyn," Flavi complains. Race's eyes widen at the idea as he thinks it through.
"Flavs, you're a genius!" he exclaims and Flavi shakes her head quickly.
"Oh no. I am not helping you glitterfy Spot's apartment. Do you realize how terrible of an idea this is?" she asks Race, pleading with him to think it through.
"I'm not going to let anything bad happen to you, Flavi. I promise," Race says, reaching for Flavi's hand which she subtlety pulls behind her back.
"Spot will take revenge on all of us if he catches us and I am not letting you do this alone. It was my idea in the first place!" Flavi whispers quickly moving away from Race. Race only steps closer.
"I think it will be fun. If there's no threat of death then it isn't fun," he says trying to pull Flavi closer to himself, "Go make a trail of green glitter leading to Albert's room and then we'll make a trip to Brooklyn." Flavi sighs and quietly sprinkles green glitter all the way to the room that Albert shares with the other boys. When she comes back, Race is busy helping Romeo fill a bucket with green glitter and place it over the door. They do that to every other door in the apartment and then they just quietly run around the apartment throwing glitter everywhere. Flavi chuckles quietly, looking on from her place. Race reappears a few minutes later with car keys.
"Can I come too?" Romeo asks. Race grins at him.
"I don't see why not," he reasons and after placing Patches in the middle of a pile of a glitter, the trio leaves the apartment for Brooklyn. On the drive over, the trio brainstorms of what they could do to attack Spot with glitter. They swing into a store and buy the biggest supply of green glitter they can find before continuing on their trip to Brooklyn.
"We need to do something where we can see his reaction," Race thinks, "which means we're going to need to wake him up."
"You have a death wish. We are really going to die doing this. Imagine if Davey were here," Flavi says as she watches Manhattan roll on by, "I feel like this plan is going to severely backfire on us."
"It could, but that's all part of the fun," Race replies, reaching over and placing his hand on top of Flavi's.
"I just want to see Albert's reaction when we frame him for being the leprechaun that attacked the apartment," Romeo pipes up from the back seat. A few minutes later, the pranksters have a plan and they pull into a parking spot in Brooklyn outside of the Brooklyn boys' apartment building that they currently may or may not have swindled the previous landlord out of. When Flavi discovered this about a year ago, Race had answered with,
"It's Brooklyn. What do you expect?" Flavi's innocence was slightly more shattered that day and her opinion of the boys in Brooklyn sank a bit.
The trio jumps out of the car and Race leaps up to the fire escape. He pulls it down and offers his hand to Flavi.
"I don't get helped up?" Romeo whines quietly from down the sidewalk.
"I ain't holding your hand. I don't know where it's been," Race replies as Flavi takes his hand and he pulls her up.
"What do you mean you don't where it's been? You're my brother!" Romeo continues to complain as he climbs up after Flavi. Race doesn't let go of Flavi's hand and pulls her further back onto the fire escape with him. He tucks her under his arm and makes room for Romeo to join them. Suddenly, a light flicks on in the window just above the fire escape.
"Change of plans," Race mutters mischievously, waiting for Romeo to hand him the glitter. Romeo sighs and hands it over.
"Why can't I do the honors?" Romeo whines again. Race puts a finger to his lips.
"Somebody has to be able to protect Flavi in case this situation really goes south," he whispers as he quietly tucks Flavi behind him.
"It's not like I can't take care of myself," Flavi whispers into Race's ear.
"I hope you don't have to," Race replies back turning to face her. Their noses touch for the briefest instant because of how close they are.
"Sorry," Flavi mutters before quickly scooting back and turning away. Race stays where he is but reaches out to Flavi.
"You don't have to be sorry. I like it when you're that close," he says out loud, causing Flavi to abruptly raise an eyebrow. Her gaze turns from one of confusion to one of fear when the window flies open. A figure casts a shadow over the group on the fire escape and Flavi really does hide behind Race this time.
"What in the world are you doing on my fire escape, Higgins?" the voice of Spot Conlon cuts through the cool March night.
"Ummmm, well. We just missed seeing your sweet..."Romeo starts but Race reaches into the glitter bag without a second thought.
"Get glittered, Conlon!" Race yells loud enough for half the apartment building to hear. Flavi shrinks behind Race even more. Race begins pelting Spot with handful after handful of glitter causing Spot to shout angrily,
"You're gonna pay for this Higgins. It's on!" Race tackles Spot with fistfuls of glitter and noticing a fan on the floor, he turns it on and sticks glitter through one side. Glitter blows everywhere around the room creating a huge mess.
"Race, what are you doing?" Flavi calls out as she climbs into the apartment, "Spot's really going to kill us!!"
"No, he's not. Spot's not anymore dangerous than Patches when someone forgets to feed her. Besides, this is fun," Race replies as he sticks more glitter into the fan. Spot eventually starts to pick it up off the floor and tackle Race with it. Flavi scurries back out the window to avoid the scuffle. Both boys fight each other, neither with the intention of actually hurting each other. Suddenly, both Race and Spot pull apart at the same time.
"Someday, this is gonna bite you, Higgins. I hope you know that," Spot threatens and Race smirks at him, glitter covering a lot of his body.
"I always get away," Race says with a smirk before climbing out the window. He stands next to Flavi, pulling her close to him, "and I always take this beautiful girl with me."
"Bye, Spot," Flavi calls out as Race's hand slides down her arm and intertwines their fingers. He pulls her down the fire escape calling out to Romeo,
"Come on, Rome! Don't want to get caught by the Brooklyn boys, do ya?" Romeo scrambles down the fire escape after them.
"You're really gonna pay for this someday, Racetrack Higgins. You started something and you better be prepared to finish it!!" Spot shouts from his place in the window. The trio quickly jumps in the car and starts to drive away, leaving an exasperated King of Brooklyn standing on his fire escape. When they reach their apartment complex in Manhattan, Race sends Romeo back inside to the apartment with the explicit instruction not to wake any of the boys. Romeo quickly and playfully kisses Flavi's hand before sneaking inside to the apartment.
"Goodnight, Miss Di'Angelo. Don't stay up too late," he says nudging her towards Race as he walks to the apartment. Flavia rolls her eyes at Romeo.
"Goodnight, Romeo. See you bright and early to see what happens with this," she whispers. The apartment door quietly closes behind Romeo, leaving Flavi and Race alone in the hallway.
"Well...." Race begins, clearly uncomfortable with the silence between them, "Thanks for going with me to Brooklyn. I had fun attacking Spot."
"It was fun to watch and if it makes you feel better, I felt very safe while we did it," Flavi states. Suddenly, her eyes crinkle up as she laughs at Race quietly.
"What? What's so funny, Flavs?" Race asks, pulling her closer to him.
"There's glitter in your hair," Flavi chuckles as she runs her fingers through his hair knocking some of the glitter onto the carpet. Race laughs and continues to run his fingers through his hair to help her get it out.
"Guess we spread a little glitter wherever we go, right?" Race asks as they continue messing with Race's hair. The distance between them is gradually starting to close and they stop running their hands through his hair.
"Guess we do," Flavi replies softly as their noses brush up against each other. Race's hands come to rest on her waist and Flavi feels her breath hitch. Flavi carefully loops her arms around Race's next and Race leans in closer. Both of them prepare for what they know is going to come next when suddenly, a cat meows from the other side of the door.
"Patches," Race grumbles as he lets go of Flavi and moves towards the door to let the small cat out.
"I better go," Flavi says quickly as Patches rubs over Race's legs, "I'll see you later, Race."
"Bye," Race calls back feeling extremely disappointed. He watches Flavi walk back to her apartment and notices her cast a small shy glance in his direction before quietly walking inside. Race scoops Patches up into his arms and walks inside to the apartment where he lives. His mind whirling with thoughts of Flavi and their almost kiss. He would have kissed her if Patches hadn't wanted his attention like she did. The cat had to ruin everything. Race continues into his room and quietly goes to sleep with Patches still in his arms and his mind whirling with thoughts of Flavia.
The next morning, shouts wake Race from his dreams of Flavi and random adventures that he dreamed up that they would go on together.
"I'm not a leprechaun!!! How many times do I have to tell you guys???" Albert's voice echoes throughout the house.
"There's a trail of green sparkles leading to your room. I don't see how you couldn't be," Spec's voice replies. Race curls up under his sheets, trying to stifle his laughter.
"I think Albert's a leprechaun. He's Irish and it's St. Patrick's Day after all. It's the perfect time for his inner leprechaun to emerge," Henry calls out. There's more shouting as Race can hear the buckets of glitter falling and smacking someone else. The shout sounds an awful lot like Jack.
"Albert, control your leprechaun desires!" Jack shouts. Albert groans angrily.
"I didn't even doing anything!" he complains, "Somebody put green glitter in my Lucky Charms box! When I went to pour the cereal, the bowl filled up with glitter! This could only have been..."
A beat of silence follows Albert's statement. Race spots the window and quickly climbs out onto the fire escape beneath it. This was really more Jack's thing because Jack always forgot his key and thought doors were boring to walk through anyways but Race was going to borrow it for once. Race scrambles out onto the fire escape just as Jack shouts,
"RACETRACK HIGGINS!! GET YOUR GLITTERY SELF OUT HERE!!!" Race shuts the window, leaving poor Patches to take the blame and scurries over to the girl's window, hurriedly knocking on it. Elley opens it quickly, her eyes filled with sleep.
"Flavi told me you might show up," she says opening the window further, "My brother is not going to be happy with you."
"Maybe you could calm him down?" Race asks timidly. Elley shakes her head.
"Ask Mush or Crutchie to do it. They both have fairly calming personalities," she responds as she pulls her phone out of her pocket, "I'll text Mush and tell him about your problem."
"Thanks," Race says as he climbs into the apartment, nearly tumbling to the floor as he enters. Flavi enters the room with a small sleepy smile plastered on her face.
"Hi," she says, "I told you this was a bad idea and you wouldn't listen to me."
"I thought I was gonna get lucky with this and with you last night," Race replies nonchalantly just to see her reaction. Flavi shoots him a look as she gets out some cereal to eat.
"I take it you haven't had breakfast yet," she says as she places the cereal boxes on the counter. Race shakes his head and Flavi pours them each a bowl of Cheerios.
"Flavi, would you have let me get lucky with you last night?" Race asks. Flavi sets down the milk a little bit harder than necessary.
"Depends on what you mean by that. I think we did get lucky that Spot didn't call out his boys to beat us up," Flavi answers, clearly ignoring the subject. Race lets out a frustrated sigh, knowing exactly what's happening with his friend.
"I consider myself to have the luck of the Irish," Race states and Flavi rolls her eyes.
"You have luck for sure. Just maybe not where you expect it," she says. Race turns around and sits backwards in a chair at the kitchen table, watching Flavi's every move.
"What's that supposed to mean?" he asks moodily. He jabs his spoon into his cereal and takes a bite. Milk splatters onto the corn of his lip. Flavi chuckles at it and she leans down closer to him.
"Like this," she replies, kissing the corner of his mouth and his cheek quickly. She pulls away faster than Race has time to process that it actually happened.
"You're a tease," Race grumbles moodily.
"There's your luck. You have a clean face for St. Patrick's Day," Flavi says before walking off to the living room to watch Leap Year in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Race grumbles and flops down next to her.
"I'm just lucky I have a friend like you," Race says, taking one of the strings of her hoodie and playing with it. Flavi smile and scoots closer, allowing Race to put his arm around her as they enjoyed St. Patrick's Day among the chaos that they had caused around them.
AN:/ I've missed Flavi and Race a lot and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to develop her and Race a little more. They just haven't got as much development.
And yes, I'm THAT author who writes the almost kiss and I did it to you twice. Sorry not sorry. They'll kiss soon. Don't worry.
This one wasn't as ridiculously funny as I was intending it to be and I think that's sort of because I stuck to the prompt more than I should have. I really should have just done them pranking Albert and him being called a leprechaun for the whole day or something but this one works too and you get character development which everyone appreciates.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!!! Hope you all have had a great day so far!! If you're Irish, have fun being Irish. I'm Irish so this is always kind of a fun day for me.
Keep your eyes peeled for Stars and Sabers (my Stars War book featuring Jalani Hal'star (my OC), Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, and some other friends old and new to the Star Wars fandom. That book should be out sooner than later. It's going to be a lot like My Life In A Bookshell with the not super connected storyline and a character who is a lot like me. Luke is another person who I think could potentially be a really good best friend turned significant other for me. I don't know. We can talk about my fandom crushes in the random book and rate them. If I like them, then there's probably a chance I would be with them a little bit. Anyhoo, enough about that. Stay tuned for the Star Wars book and other updates!! I'm really excited about Stars and Sabers. It's going to be great especially because Jalani and Luke are going to grow up in the force together and it isn't going to follow the trilogy. There maybe snippets of the original trilogy that I think Luke and Jalani would have fun together doing but not the whole thing. I'm exploring some new ideas.
If you've made it this far, thanks for dealing with my random ramblings and this oneshot. I hope everyone liked it and that it was something cute and fun for St. Patrick's Day. Feel free to vote, comment, or do whatever it is you want to do. You all are such fun readers. Thank you for just being you and doing what you do. It makes me happy. :) Disclaimer: I don't own anything that I mentioned (Ziploc, Cheerios, Leap Year) in the story that isn't a Newsies character or OC. Just throwing that out there. Thank you so much for your support and have a happy and safe St. Patrick's Day!!!
See you around,
Aisling
