Let It Snow
Since Let It Snow was released in 1945, this one is a 40s/50s AU. I'm leaning more towards 50s but, we'll keep it there. Enjoy! I don't own the song Let It Snow by the way and I'm not really sure who does but, it's not mine. The history behind this song is kinda confusing because I think it changed ownership a couple different times. Although it's a pretty cool song.
Jack Kelly is shivering. He sits in the drafty Lodging House all by himself, a rare moment in history for the leader of the Lower Eastside Manhattan Newsies. A fire is flickering in the fireplace in the lobby of the Lodging House and yet, Jack is so cold. A heating system rattles loudly somewhere in the building and Jack continues to shiver. The boys had barely been able to scrape enough money together to buy a heater a couple of years ago when winter hit. Keeping up with the electric bills to keep it running was a whole other story. The school that the boys attended when they weren't running around handing out newspapers on people's doorsteps, was hosting a dance that evening. Jack has other plans. His girlfriend, Katherine, has been asking to come visit the Lodging House but, Jack didn't want her to see how messy it was or see it when the boys were there because there was one Newsie (Racetrack Higgins...he's looking at you), who was bound to say something to Katherine the moment she walked in the door.
Not that Jack really thought that would phase Katherine at all but, he didn't want to take any chances. The girls had been helping Jack the whole week make the Lodging House look nice and presentable as well as festive. A Christmas tree with lights around it stands in a corner. It was indeed a real Christmas tree but Jack could never get it out of the boys how they got it...oh well. Somethings are better left unknown.
A knock on the door pulls him from his thoughts and Jack runs over to the door to open it. Katherine Pulitzer stands on the other side of the door, takes one look at him and sighs.
"You're shivering again," she says as she walks into the Lodging House. She takes off her coat and hangs it on one of the many hooks by the door.
"Hello to you too," Jack replies as he follows her into the lobby. Katherine tosses him a cozy blanket and Jack slowly puts it around his shoulders.
"I brought something that you might enjoy," Katherine says and waves the record that she has been holding around in the air. Jack perks up a little bit at the sight of it.
"We'se haven't heard any new ones in awhile. Thank goodness you brought one. Race keeps trying to sing like Snow White and all of our ear drums have suffered greatly from that," he says as he walks over to the phonograph and preps it for the record. Katherine places the record on and points to the first song,
"This first one is new!! I haven't heard it yet." Jack nods his head in agreement and Katherine places the record on the phonograph. The new song starts to pipe through the speaker filling the room with cheerful music. Jack puts a hand on the small of Katherine's back and guides her over to the ratty couch in the center of the room. They sit down next to each other and Jack pulls the blanket across Katherine's lap as well as his own. Katherine snuggles into Jack's side and leans her head against his shoulder.
"You being here just made the Lodging House so much warmer," Jack says with a grin as he kisses Katherine's temple. Katherine blushes and reaches for Jack's hand under the blanket.
"It was pretty warm already when I came in and stop with the cheesy "I think you're hot" lines. I already know that you think I am," Katherine says as she intertwines her fingers with Jack's. Jack grins at her and pulls her closer to him, if that was even possible. The song, Sleigh Ride pipes through the phonograph with the Andrews Sisters singing it. Jack and Katherine simply listen to the music as it plays. Christmas was still a couple of days away and Jack doesn't know what he's going to get Katherine.
"I hope the feelings are mutual," Jack responds, laying his head on top of Katherine's. Katherine chuckles softly,
"Jack, we just graduated from high school last year. Maybe it's too soon for you to know."
"It's never too soon to tell me, Ace," Jack muses as he nuzzles his cheekbone in Katherine's hair. The couple stays like that for awhile until a wild howl of wind from outside arouses both of them from their snuggle session. Jack gets up to look outside and his eyes widen at the amount of snow that flows down from the sky.
"It was starting to snow on my way over," Katherine says from her place on the couch as she spreads over into where Jack was sitting.
"It's definitely snowing now," Jack replies as he watches the large snowflakes come down from the snow, "The boys won't want to walk the girls home in this." The snow is already starting to pile up on the sidewalks and people hurry past, seeking the shelter of their homes.
"Are you saying that everyone else is stuck at the high school and we're stuck here?" Katherine asks, her voice muffled as the majority of her face is covered up the blanket.
"I think so," Jack says with a grin and Katherine groans. She pulls the blanket up closer to her body.
"I could walk ya home," Jack offers but Katherine frowns.
"No, I'll just have to tough it out. My father would be mortified if I spent the night here in the Lodging House. No offense. I really wouldn't mind staying here but I shouldn't. If I wanted to appease my parents," she says from underneath the blanket.
"Not like you try too hard to do that anyways," Jack responds, gently pulling the blanket away from her face. Her hair was in her face and clinging to her cheek in a way that made Jack's heart beat a little bit faster. How had he gotten so lucky? Jack gently moves the hair out of her face and Katherine leans into his touch. A song that Jack doesn't recognize pipes out of the phonograph.
"I love this song and it really fits our situation," Katherine hums from the couch. Jack climbs over the back of the couch and perches on the arm.
"Can't I sit on the couch?" he asks and Katherine chuckles.
"Nope, it's all mine."
"Aaaaaccccceeeeee," Jack whines and Katherine sits up enough so Jack can squeeze in next to her. Katherine leans up against Jack's shoulder and closes her eyes. She starts to quietly hum along with the song. Jack moves his arm and pulls his Katherine closer into himself. He drapes his arm over her back causing Katherine to hum with pleasure. The two keep on listening to the song when it comes to the lyric..
"When we finally kiss good night"
Jack looks down at Katherine.
"Youse never kissed me good night," he says quietly. Katherine rolls her eyes.
"I could say the same thing about you," she chirps. Jack chuckles and gently rubs her back with his hand. Katherine grabs it and takes it in her own. The two sit on the couch, too tired and much too content to actually get up and do something about their situation.
"I can kiss you goodnight if you want. I've been told that I give the best goodnight kisses," Jack whispers in Katherine's ear. Katherine sits up enough so she can look at him. Her hair is ruffled and kind of a mess but Jack finds it beautiful anyways. She rolls her eyes but before she can lay her head back down, Jack catches her chin with his fingertips.
"I forgot the popcorn, Jack..."Katherine whispers sleepily. Jack raises his eyebrows in confusion. How could she kill his moment like that?
"You what?" he asks, extremely confused by this random assertion.
"The song talks about popcorn...I forgot it," she states plainly and Jack shrugs.
"So? We don't get to eat popcorn a lot around here so it doesn't matter," he says. Katherine frowns at him when he says this.
"What do you mean you don't eat a lot of popcorn?" she asks in a judging tone.
"Don't have the funds for it. Heck, we'se barely got the funds to make the heating system run. You know this," Jack replies. Katherine frowns at him,
"Hmmmm. We'll have to fix that, won't we?"
"We'se got a lot of things to fix," Jack states, gently pulling snaking his arm around Katherine's waist under the blanket.
"What would they be? You boys seem to fairly happy with what you have," she says with a smile as she snuggles into Jack's touch. Every time that Jack even does something as simple as bumping into her, it feels as though that whole spot is on fire. Yes, she is under a blanket but, she knows that's not why she feels sparks around the back of her waist. Why did he have to this effect on her?
"Could be better..." Jack says quietly, causing Katherine to raise an eyebrow.
"How so? You have me and it looks like we're trapped here until morning," Katherine replies softly.
"The song keeps telling you what you're missing," Jack says just as a certain lyric comes on again...
"When we finally kiss goodnight, how I hate going out in the snow."
Katherine rolls her eyes bringing about a smirk on Jack's face. Then to surprise him, she quickly leans up and closes the gap between their lips. Jack responds instantly. His other arm moving away from supporting himself to around Katherine's waist. His fingers begin to play with her hair and he kisses her very passionately. Katherine tries to push herself up into a position where she can run her fingers through his hair, but Jack really wants to kiss her and she really wants to kiss him. She pushes up against Jack even more, which only eggs him on to keep going. Katherine tries to sit up but Jack keeps her locked in his grip and keeps kissing her passionately. Finally, she manages to pull him away from him for a second. Both of them are gasping for air.
"Let me sit up more this time and I need some air. You're going to kiss me senseless," Katherine says quickly. Her lips feel like their on fire. Why does Jack Kelly do this to her? Elley could never give her a straight answer about her brother except that he really loves Katherine. The song continues playing in the background and Jack smiles as he listens to the lyrics.
"This song feels a lot like us right now, don't it, Ace?" he asks her, his breathing labored and heavy from kissing her.
"I think we've established this," Katherine answers as she sits up all the way this time. Jack smiles at her and wraps one of her auburn curls around his index finger. He leans forward and closes the gap again. His arms weave their away around Katherine's shoulders and Katherine leans into his touch again.
"Oh, Ace. I love you," Jack whispers softly as the song comes to a close.
"Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!"
"It can snow the rest of the night for all I care," Katherine says as she leans her forehead up against Jack's. They stay like that until they hear the sound of the record ending. Jack goes over and fiddles it with it until it starts again. Once it starts, they resume their snuggled up position.
"I agree. We need this," Jack says softly as he closes his eyes. Katherine gently hugs Jack around his waist and kisses his cheek. His arms move down to her waist and he returns the favor by kissing her on the lips. They continue kissing each other and the kisses get more passionate the more they do them. Let It Snow comes on again and the two of them smile at the lyrics.
"It's true that holding me tight will keep home all the way back to apartment," Katherine whispers in Jack's ear as they take a break from kissing. Jack gently tangles his fingers in her hair and Katherine runs her hands through his own hair. Her hands finally land on his shoulders.
"You'se don't have to go..."Jack replies as he pulls her closer to him. She leans her head into his chest and sighs.
"I don't want to but, I would be the talk of the neighborhood if I stayed the night here," Katherine groans as Jack tightens his grip around her waist.
"Like you care about that..."Jack remarks as Let It Snow continues, "Ain't it too snowy to go outside?"
"No, but if I want a place to live, I should probably go home," Katherine says as she stays snuggled into Jack's grip. Jack groans a little bit and starts to move off the couch. He walks over to the record player and pulls the record off to hand it to Katherine but she waves him away.
"You don't want it?" Jack asks and Katherine shakes her head.
"Keep it. I have plenty at my house and all you have here is that old scratched up Christmas record," she replies.
"If Race hadn't let Patches play with it, it wouldn't be scratched up!" Jack explains and Katherine chuckles keeping the blanket pulled around her as she stands up. She then takes it off and drapes it around Jack's shoulders.
"Keep this too. You need it," Katherine says. She quickly pecks Jack on the lips and he whines when she pulls away so quickly.
"Ace....you're really going to leave me here?" Jack asks causing Katherine to chuckle.
"I can't stay here and the boys will be back before too long. You know that they'll brave the snow no matter the conditions," Katherine replies as she gently runs a hand down Jack's cheek. She quickly pulls her warm winter coat on and starts for the door. Jack quickly turns her around and pushes her up against the door. He moves closer and kisses her passionately, kissing her senseless.
"There's your goodnight kiss," Jack says softly, causing Katherine to laugh.
"You do give pretty good goodnight kisses," she replies as she starts to open the door.
"Be careful out there. Are you sure you don't want me to walk you home?" Jack asks and Katherine shakes her head.
"I'll be fine. It's not like anyone's going to be out tonight in this weather anyways," she says.
"Okay. Just watch out for a certain Oscar Delancey. He frequents trash cans, just so you know," Jack advises. Katherine laughs a little bit at his remark.
"He does. I will. Don't stay up too late waiting for the boys," Katherine replies. Jack chuckles and gently kisses her one more time and this time Katherine swings the door open behind her.
"Goodnight," Jack calls out as she starts to walk away.
"Goodnight!!!" Katherine calls back as she walks down the street. Jack smiles and leans up against the doorway. Christmas lights flicker throughout the city, making his Katherine walking under them all the more beautiful. It was definitely the most wonderful time of the year when you had someone you loved to share it with.
AN:/ I'M BACK!!!! For a couple of weeks and hopefully a little bit more permanently...So, this one lacked a plot but was really just supposed to contain adorable cuteness. I think it served it's purpose. I think I'm going to do "An Other Side of the Story" one that is about everyone else at the Winter/Christmas dance at the high school and what happens there when the snow hits. It will also be 40s/50s AU and will include everybody else, including OCs. I'm kind of excited as to how these Christmas oneshots are turning out. This one was just plain adorable and it was kind of a song fic.
Fun fact: Sleigh Ride was first recorded with vocals in 1950 with The Andrews Sisters as you saw Katherine mention earlier on.
I also tried to keep this one kind of short because, I feel like if it was really long, then that was just going to be too long and too much. I was going for short and sweet. The next Christmas one might be a little bit longer.
PSA: I'm also going to try to release some new stuff over this break!! My Life In A Bookshell and War Wonders are the things I'm going to work on releasing new. I'm going to try to update some of my other Newsies stuff. I'm going to TRY... it doesn't mean that any of it will happen. I'll try to update some old stuff at least...like the Psych story. I did watch Psych last night but...I haven't gotten any inspiration that I want to use right now so, I'm going to give it a little more time and maybe watch some more Psych to get the juices flowing about Elizabeth/Liz again. It'll come if I give it time. So, I've got a lot of ground to cover but I think some of it will get accomplished at least.
I hope you all enjoyed this oneshot. I absolutely love reading comments so, feel free to drop your thoughts on by as you read. If you have any suggestions of future oneshots you want to see, feel free to drop a suggestion. Have a Merry Christmas and I will see you guys very soon!!!
