Brothers Of the Battlefield
Newsies and Wonder Woman Crossover Oneshot. This does not fit in with the timeline that is kind of a part of this book and this is a teaser (sort of) for my book that is still in the process of being pre-written. This also does fit with any scene from either Newsies or Wonder Woman. I am using the Wonder Woman 2017 characters for this oneshot. and this one is kind for the two of you. I hope you both enjoy it. Violence warning: This is a WWI story. Nothing is gory but people do die in this one.
KABOOM!!!!!
The explosion roars inches away from Captain Steve Trevor's head. Never in his life would he see himself here. World War I was not something to be messed with by any means. And yet here he was, playing spy, which had become one of his favorite past times. There was something thrilling about looking at both sides of the war and helping one side, but not the other. Suddenly, a plane roars over ahead. "Just on schedule!" Steve thinks to himself and continues weaving through the bullets whizzing by him. The Germans begin shooting at the plane but, the pilot is an expert. Steve has trained him well. The pilot flies over the battlefield and towards a forest. Steve runs off in the direction that the plane has flown. After running for a short time, Steve spots the plane. The pilot throws open the door and jumps out.
"Kelly, I have never been so happy to see you!" Steve says and Jack Kelly smiles at Steve.
"Yeah, it's good to see you too, Trevor," Jack says and the two men shake hands. Suddenly, the sound of machine gun fire rips through the peaceful forest and the two men quickly run behind the plane.
"Did you see Diana anywhere?" Steve whispers to Jack and he shakes his head.
"No, heard about her though. She's a mystery that everyone in the office was talking about in New York," Jack replies and eventually the machine gun fire hits something metal. Jack and Steve peek out from behind the plane to see Diana, blocking the bullets with her shield and huddling most of the way behind it. She sees Steve and Jack and waves them out.
"Go, I will take care of them," She says in a low voice and Jack and Steve start to sneak away. Until Steve can feel the end of the gun against his cheek. Diana sees this and abandons the man shooting the machine gun. She loops her lasso around the edge of the gun and pulls it away from Steve's cheek. Diana pulls it so strongly that the gun flies off into the trees somewhere. The soldier suddenly looks nervous. Steve throws a punch and the German falls back into the brush unconscious.
"You didn't teach me that in my training!" Jack whines and Steve rolls his eyes.
"You have had training?" Diana asks and Jack nods. He spits into his hand and holds it out to Diana.
"The name's Jack Kelly," Jack says and Diana stares at his hand, soiled in spit.
"What disgusting rituals that men have created," Diana replies and Jack's face turns a bright red with embarrassment.
"Scuse me," He mutters apologetically and wipes his hand onto his pants before offering it out again. Diana smiles at him this time and shakes it.
"That is better. My name is Diana. I am a princess but Steve said my name was Diana Prince. Now, I am very confused," Diana says and Jack thinks on his feet.
"Your last name is Diana Prince, Diana. I know you are a princess," Steve responds and Diana smiles at him.
"Good," She says and then runs off in the direction of the battlefield.
"Diana!" Both men shout and they run off after her. Diana leaps out into the middle of a full scale battle. She blocks bullets with her wristlets and starts charging at the men. Diana tosses their guns out of their hands and knocks them unconscious. Jack and Steve run out of the woods and see unconscious men lying everywhere.
"Diana," Steve says, looking around at the mess they have made, "If anyone else finds this..."
"I didn't kill them. They are just sleeping," Diana says reassuringly.
"Maybe we should take her back to New York and introduce her to the agency. They can train her the right way to be a fighter and a spy," Jack suggests and Steve shakes his head.
"Are you insane? No one in New York is going to let a woman on the field," He responds and Jack smirks at him.
"Oh yea, what about Ace?" Jack asks and Steve quickly looks at the ground.
"Is something the matter?" Diana asks and Steve shakes his head.
"No, nothing is wrong, Diana. It's just," Steve starts to explain only to see a huge tank rolling up in their direction, "Get out of here!" Jack and Steve start to run away from the tank while Diana starts to run towards it. The two men watch in amazement as Diana picks up the huge tank and tosses it onto its side. A large crash sounds as the various items on the tank break. Diana steps back and smiles at the two boys.
"That's taken care of," She observes and runs closer to a nearby village where gunshots can be heard.
"Glad we didn't bring Davey along. He would have been terrified when Diana threw that tank," Jack says and Steve nods his head in agreement. Davey could be very protective. Sometimes Steve and Jack both thought he was a little too protective of everyone to be involved in the military, but it was his choice not theirs. Jack and Steve follow Diana into the small village and this time they aren't worried. Diana races into the village ready to fight anyone and anything.
Meanwhile, Racetrack Higgins, leader of a small (like five people small) squadron of gunman, spots a woman clad in some interesting armor.
"Race, who's that beauty?" Romeo whispers and the older boy shrugs.
"I don't know, but I'm gonna find out," Race replies. He hands Mush his rifle and straightens up his clothing before heading out into the open. "Hey there, miss," He calls out and Diana tackles him to the ground just as some gunfire starts up. "Whoa, you'se don't gotta get that excited. I'se was just introducing myself although, I wouldn't blame you if you did. I like excited women." Diana cocks her head and stands up. A bullet whizzes toward her and she blocks it with one of her wristlets. Jack and Steve sneak into the small area and begin fighting their way through the soldiers to the squadron. Steve spots Diana and Racetrack on the ground.
"Go lead the squadron. I'll take care of Race," Steve says and Jack sneaks his way back to the squadron. Diana protects Race and blocks the bullets that the Germans are shooting at them with her wristlets. Steve kneels down next to Race.
"Steve! Did ya find Jack?" Race asks and Steve helps him to his feet. Just as the two stand up, a ring of German solders surround them and more march into the village.
"Do you have a gun? Where's your rifle?" Steve asks and Race shakes his head.
"Gave it to Mush. Jacky probably has it," Race replies and Diana turns to face them.
"I can fight them off," She replies and Steve shrugs.
"Do your best," He says and Diana starts to fight them off. Steve pulls out his small pistol and tries to shoot at the Germans, but it stands fairly ineffective against the large German assault rifles. One of the men knocks Diana to the ground and Steve hands Race his pistol. He cracks his knuckles ready to throw a punch but, the Germans all raise their guns. Just as they get ready to shoot Steve, Diana stands up and blocks the first bullet, but the Germans are getting smarter. Shooting at Diana in places that are harder and harder for her to deflect. Jack and the squadron are standing nearby.
"Jack, someone is going to get shot if we don't do something," Mush says and Jack nods. He spots a fire escape and carefully pulls it down. Jack clicks the safety back on the rifle and swiftly pulls himself up the ladder. Mush, Romeo, Albert, and Skittery follow.
"Did you call Crutchie or the Walking Mouth before you left this morning?" Jack asks as they climb up the fire escape.
"Race called Crutchie," Skittery responds and the five boys lay low on the tall roof top. None of the Germans spot them as they are too focused on Diana, Race and Steve down below.
"What do we do, Jack?" Mush whispers. Jack looks for Skittery, who is the sniper for the squadron.
"Skitts, snipe one of em and see what happens," Jack whispers and Skittery nods. Skittery snipes one of the German soldiers and the whole commotion stops for a brief moment. One of the Germans grabs at Steve, but he pulls away. The German slaps Steve's wrist and pulls him out
"You have help?" The German roared and Steve shrugged.
"No. Someone probably was sniping for one of us and tagged your man instead," Steve lies and the German shoves him back into the ring.
"Kill them all!" He roars and Diana keeps trying to fight through. She pulls out the lasso and does as best as she can, but more and more soldiers keep coming.
"Skitts, snipe another one. Then we'll show ourselves," Jack instructs and Skittery snipes another German. The Germans see this and form a tighter ring around Steve, Race, and Diana. Jack holds his gun in one hand and sticks two of his fingers into his mouth from his other hand. He lets out an ear piercing whistle that stops the whole fight and then the five boys begin firing at the Germans from the top of the rooftop. Steve, Diana and Race all begin fighting the Germans and making their escape. Diana tosses her lasso at the guns and knocks them away from the Germans. She kicks and throws punches at the Germans. Race knocks a couple of Germans out with his fists and Steve is firing at the Germans as well while slowly making his way back to the squadron. He quickly climbs up to the roof from the fire escape and speaks to Jack,
"Go steal a plane and take a couple of boys with you."
"Who do you want to fight here with you?" Jack asks.
"Take Skittery and Mush. Albert and Romeo should be fine to stay," Steve says and Jack nods.
"How big of a plane?" He asks. Steve thinks for a second.
"Big enough to get all of us and some intel back to New York," Steve says and Jack nods to the two older boys. The three of them run back to the forest where Jack ditched the airplane earlier that day. Fighting rages on below. The true tales of war revealing their colors as Diana fights with the Germans. Her fists fly and her lasso snaps at the air. She raises her sword, bringing it down and striking the German soldiers. The fighting is more intense than anything she ever experienced back on her island but, she is enjoying helping peoples. Some of the villagers have now come out when they see that there is someone actually fighting for their cause. Steve, Albert, and Romeo go and join Diana and Race as they fight. The fight goes quickly and many Germans fall. Diana receives several bruises from the hard hits that she takes. Race gets knocked in the head a couple of times, Albert and Romeo both receive some hard hits as well. Everything seems to be going in their favor until Diana is struck hard over the head. She falls to the ground unconscious.
"NO!" All four of the American fighters shout and Albert pulls out a bomb and tosses it at a vacant building. Steve shoots it and the whole building bursts into flames. Race and Romeo provide cover as Steve and Albert try to move Diana to a safer place. She begins to stir and wakes up. Instantly, her hand flies to her head.
"Steve," She whispers, "what happened? My head hurts." Her eyes flutter open and she sees her blue eyed friend standing there. "Do you have anything to help the pain?" She asks and Steve racks his brain for a moment. He gently lays a hand on her cheek and Diana nestles into it. An idea comes to his mind and Steve leans down and gently kisses her temple.
"Does that make you feel better?" Steve asks mischievously. Diana giggles and sits up.
"Lots," She says and then takes off back to the fight. Steve realizes in that moment that he loves her. If only he wasn't so scared to tell her.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Jack, Mush and Skittery all find the plane right where Jack and Steve had left it earlier that day.
"This ain't gonna work," Skittery states, stating the obvious. Jack rolls his eyes and jumps into the cockpit.
"You two are not going to fit in here," Jack says to Mush and Skittery, "Meet me over at the air base for the Germans. There's a forest over there. Hide there until you see me land the plane. Make sure that your pistols and weapons are on you. There is a good chance we will need them." The two boys nod and wait for Jack to take off. Skittery hears the sound of motorcycles in the woods. He looks at Mush with a mischievous grin on his face. The two boys find some large logs to put in the middle of the road and the two German motorcyclists stop to move them out of the way. Skittery and Mush each throw a couple of punches at some German soldiers and steal the bikes. Mush spots a notebook on the ground and pockets it. Skittery and Mush each take a motorcycle and race toward the airport.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Diana throws another large piece of debris at a group of German soldiers. It smashes and the gunfire ceases from that part of the village. Diana continues to lead the fight and she wields her shield. Steve, Albert, Romeo, and Race give her plenty of cover as she fights, taking out Germans one by one. The five watch as Diana lassos a large piece of a building and blocks the Germans with it. She can hear the gunfire still continuing so, she starts running and leaps over the debris. Diana fights the Germans until the gunfire ceases to continue. By the time she has taken care of them, the other four are done defeating the Germans that they were fighting. The people of the village come out to thank them and congratulate them, but Steve tries to get the group to move along.
"We have got to get the air base if we are ever going to be successful," Steve persists and the small group bids the city farewell. As a token of the village's gratitude, one of the villagers lends the group a car to drive. Steve starts it and the group drives off to the German air force base.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Jack lands the plane and jumps out of the cockpit only to be pushed up against the side by a German rifle.
"Come with me," a voice bellows and Jack recognizes the voice.
"Dutchy?" Jack whispers and sure enough, Jack recognizes his friend from New York.
"I have something important to tell you," Dutchy says and he pulls Jack into a small office.
"I didn't know you were doing this!" Jack exclaims and Dutchy keeps his German accent.
"I'm of true German blood. It wouldn't make sense if they didn't use me in a situation where my homeland is involved," Dutchy replies and he shuts the door. "Anything I can do to help?"
"I need a plane to get everyone back to New York on," Jack says and Dutchy shakes his head.
"The German army does not have passenger airplanes big enough for that task. Would a cargo plane do the job?" Dutchy asks and Jack nods.
"Yeah. Thanks, Dutchy," Jack responds.
"I also have some bad news," Dutchy says and Jack raises an eyebrow.
"Is it something we can take care of right now?" Jack asks and Dutchy shrugs.
"More or less. Depends on how good you are at breaking someone out of kidnapping situation," Dutchy says and Jack winces.
"Oh no! The Germans kidnapped someone. I hope it wasn't one of the boys," Jack warns and Dutchy shakes his head.
"It's worse than one of the boys," Dutchy informs Jack and he pulls a file out of the desk in the room and drops it onto the top of the desk. Jack opens the file and sees lots of handwritten notes.
"Dutchy, can you translate?" Jack asks and Dutchy points to one thing that Jack could read in any language. The word Ace written like a name for someone is scrawled on the piece of paper. "They kidnapped Ace!" Jack shrieks only to be shushed by Dutchy, "why would they kidnap her? I thought she was in New York."
"That's what I thought too, but someone gave her an assignment. She came over and someone must have found out because she was kidnapped shortly after she got off the train," Dutchy says and Jack rubs his chin.
"Where are they keeping her? Can I find her?" Jack asks and Dutchy thinks about it for a moment.
"They had her tied up somewhere last I knew. I'm more in charge of where all the airplanes are, not the people that the Germans kidnap," Dutchy says.
"Is there anyway you can find out?" Jack asks nervously. Ace is such a valuable person and if the Germans manage to pry anything out of her, this whole operation will be in grave danger.
"I am rather good friends with the person who is in charge of who is where in the prison. I am sure I could ask him," Dutchy thinks out loud. Jack nods his head quickly.
"Please do," Jack begs and Dutchy nods.
"Hide in the closet. I will be right back," Dutchy instructs and Jack shuffles into the closet and shuts the door. A few moments after Dutchy leaves, the door flies open and muffled cries cut through her as well as loud German voices. Jack peeks through the crack of light in between the door and the door frame and sees Ace being forced into a chair. A cloth is tied tightly around her mouth to keep her from talking and her wrists are tied behind her back. If only there was some way Steve, Diana and the rest of the boys could show up. Two German soldiers quickly tie Ace to the chair.
"Katherine," Jack whispers quietly to himself and he silently pulls a picture of her out of his pocket that he has of her. He looks at it and gently runs his fingertip down her cheek. Ace smiles back at him with a bright grin and her eyes sparkle in a way that makes Jack's eyes light up when she enters the room. He hates seeing her in such a vulnerable position. Like Diana, Ace is a strong woman. If only the Germans would leave.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Steve steers the car through the woods, bumping into various logs and objects as he drives.
"Steve, could you make the trip a little less bumpy?" Race asks and Steve groans.
"I fly planes and I do drive cars but not in the woods," Steve replies as he tries to be a little bit nicer to the car. Diana shifts uncomfortably next to Steve. "You alright?" Steve asks her and Diana shakes her head. She leans her head against his shoulder.
"My head still hurts from that fall," She says and Steve nods.
"It will feel better soon. I promise," He says as he steers the car. Suddenly, two figures run out in front of the car and Steve slams on the brakes. Albert, Race and Romeo all grab their rifles and point them at the two figures. Mush comes running up to him.
"Steve! Steve! Look what we found!" Mush whispers and he stands Steve the notebook. Steve opens it and smiles at the notes inside. Lots of diagrams and notes are scrawled across the pages. Diana cocks her head so her chin rests on Steve's shoulder.
"It says something about a mission," She whispers and suddenly her eyes go wide, "An attack on the United States?" Steve's eyes go wide and Skittery points toward the base.
"We saw Jack land the plane but, we haven't seen him since then. Some German grabbed him and the two went inside the base," Skittery says and Steve glares at the two boys.
"You didn't stop him?" Steve asks and Mush shakes his head.
"It was gonna blow our cover and besides, we were there only if Jack needed us," Mush replies and Steve shakes his head.
"He may be in big trouble. We are going to find him," Steve says and Diana moves her head from his shoulder. Steve hurries out of the car and helps Diana out as well.
"Diana, stay here," Steve responds and Diana frowns at him.
"Why? Why can't I help stop the war?" She asks and Steve gently moves Mush next to her.
"Make sure she doesn't go anywhere," Steve says to Mush and Mush nods, "The rest of you are coming with me." The group of five marches toward the barbed wire gates that guard the German Air Force Base.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Jack is stuck. Very very stuck. If he comes out of his hiding place, the Germans will kill him, Ace and eventually Dutchy too. One of the Germans rips the gag off of Ace's mouth and they begin to interrogate her. She struggles under their iron gazes and glares at them.
"Nothing you say is going to make me tell you anything," She says and Jack silently applauds her from his hiding place.
"Alright then. Makes our job easier," One of the Germans says and Jack hears the click of a safety being released from a gun. Jack yanks out his own pistol, clicks the safety off as quietly as he can and pokes the end of the gun through the crack in the door. He shoots the pistol of the soldier and before Jack can even realize what he has done, the door to the closet flies open.
"Cowboy?" Ace asks, using Jack's code name, when she sees him.
"Oh, your little lady friend seems very happy to see you," One of the Germans grabs Jack around the neck and gently begins to squeeze. Jack begins to gasp for air as his windpipe starts to close.
"Tell us what you know about the American plans for this war and we will set you free," The German commander says and Ace thinks for a moment. Jack struggles to breathe and the situation seems hopeless. His airway becomes smaller and smaller.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Diana was getting impatient. Everything was taking a long time and she did not want to stand around and do nothing. She wants to fight and she wants to help stop the war. Mush notices her getting impatient.
"I've got to do something," Diana says to Mush and she takes off running.
"Diana!" Mush shouts and runs after her. Diana leaps over the gate with ease and runs straight toward the building. She makes it inside and a German with glasses is racing towards an office. The sound of a huge commotion on the other side of a door catches Diana's attention as well as the man's. Mush catches up to her and is gasping for her.
"Mush, is that you?" The German with glasses asks and Mush stops panting for a second.
"Dutchy?" He asks quietly.
"Something's going on in my office. Something bad," Dutchy says and Mush hears the commotion too.
"Why don't you stop it?" Mush asks, still exhausted from the run.
"I don't want to get shot," Dutchy protests and Diana turns to the two of them.
"Stand back," She warns. She puts her shield up and charges at the door. The door shatters into a million pieces and what is happening inside the office is not a good situation. Diana sees Jack nearly being strangled by some German soldiers and a young woman tied to a chair. She punches the soldier holding Jack and he slumps to the floor. Diana starts blocking gunshots yet again and throws punches. Jack grabs out his pocket knife and cuts Ace free. Diana throws a German out of the room and turns back to Jack and Ace. "Are you two alright? Do I need to find Steve?"
"That would be helpful. Thanks, Diana. You saved our lives," Jack says and Ace looks at Diana curiously.
"I don't believe we've met before. I'm Ace. You must be the Diana that everyone is talking about. You have no idea how proud everyone in New York is of you," Ace says and Diana blushes.
"Thank you. Yes, I am Diana. It is a pleasure to meet you," Diana says and the two women shake hands. Suddenly, Mush and Dutchy start shouting out in the hallway. Diana takes off running and Jack starts to run after her, but Ace grabs his hand.
"Ace, let me go. I gotta go see what's happening," Jack whines, but Ace shoots him a look.
"Don't think you're getting away that easily, Kelly," Ace says and Jack looks at her defeated. Suddenly, one of the German soldiers starts to wake up and Jack lets go of Ace's hand. He punches the German in the face twice, rendering him unconscious again.
"Sorry, didn't want to be interrupted more than that," Jack says with a cheeky grin and Ace laughs a little.
"I've missed seeing you. It's been awhile since you've been back in New York," Ace says and Jack chuckles.
"Yeah, the war didn't let me stay in New York. It's been an exciting year," Jack replies and he intertwines his hand with Katherine's. "Listen, I know things have been hard since the war started and we've secretly been involved before the US even got involved, but I never forgot about you," Jack says and he pulls the picture out of his pocket. Ace's eyes go wide when she sees that it is a picture of her.
"Jack..." Ace says softly, "You didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to," He says and Ace smiles at him.
"I had been wanting to get into some action here, but I was having trouble. The agency wanted to send all of the men out first and they finally did get to me," Ace says softly, "At first, I wanted to do it to prove that women can do things that men can't, but I've missed you a lot since you've been gone and then I realized it was because I wanted to be with you."
" I know that things have not been the best with me being here and you being in New York, but every time I was in the same room as you, I would feel this joy. It's a kind of joy that I only feel around you. Katherine, would you want to be my girl? " Jack asks and Katherine nods.
"I would love to, but maybe after the war. Then we will all be in the same place," Ace replies and Jack smiles at her. He cups her cheek with his hand and leans into kiss her. Their lips meet and the kiss goes from being gentle to a kiss of yearning. A kiss of two friends who realize that they are lovers. Two people who are never going to let go of the other.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Steve and the boys search everywhere for Jack. They look in the hangars. Race attempts to steal one of the German's cigars, but Steve keeps him from doing so.
"Where is Cowboy?" Steve asks quietly to no one in particular.
"Probably found some girl to flirt with," Albert says and Steve raises an eyebrow.
"You sure that wasn't Race?" He asks and the other three nearly die of laughter. Steve leads the group out of the hangar and to the office building. The group splits up and Steve's eyes widen at the scene unfolding in front of him.
"Tell me exactly what is going to happen between Germany and the United States if Germany attacks the United States," Diana demands and Steve can see the Lasso of Truth wrapped around a German soldier. The man stutters and Diana tightens the lasso around him. Finally, something in German comes out of his mouth. Diana listens closely and her eyes cloud over with confusion at what she hears. Steve walks over to Mush and a kid about his age dressed up in a German uniform.
"Steve, meet Dutchy. He's helping us, I promise," Mush pleads and Steve's eyes narrow skeptically. The two shake hands anyways and Steve introduces himself.
"I'm Steve Trevor. Do you by any chance know where Jack is?" Steve asks and Dutchy nods.
"I would check the room right down the little hallway to your left," Dutchy advises and Steve nods his thanks.
"Cowboy, you in here?" Steve asks poking his head in the door and he stops short at what he sees. He sees Jack kissing a girl and both of them seem very happy together. Steve clears his throat. Jack breaks off the kiss with the girl.
"Oh, Steve. Didn't know you were around," Jack says and the girl turns so Steve can see her.
"Steve!" The girl exclaims. Steve recognizes his friend the minute he sees her.
"Hey, Ace! Good to see you," Steve says and the two hug quickly. Steve thinks he sees a look of protectiveness flash over Jack's eyes for a moment as he hugs Ace. The two let go and Jack's face lightens up a little bit. "So, how did you get here?"
"Well, I actually had an assignment in Berlin but, I was kidnapped as soon as I got off the train and brought here. The Germans tried to kill me but Jack intervened before they did. Then things got bad for us and Diana came and helped us out," Ace says and Steve nods.
"Yeah, she likes to do that sort of thing," Steve says and he notices Diana in the doorway, "Speaking of her..."
"Hello, everyone. I managed to translate the information that the German had on attacking the United States," Diana announces.
"You did?" Steve asks and Diana nods.
"Yes and I think they are going to take a special plane over to assassinate the President," Diana says and the three spies exchange worried glances.
"Assassinating the President?" Ace asks, "We need to leave right now!"
"Jack, go find a plane to steal and we have got to get out of here," Steve says and Jack runs out to Dutchy.
"I need those keys for the plane right now," Jack says and Dutchy hands him one off of a huge ring.
"Good luck, Jack," Dutchy responds and Jack peeks his head into Steve. He shows Steve the key and Steve takes it from him. The rest of the squadron is gathered up in the same hall as Dutchy. Diana stands with them and Ace joins her. Steve runs out toward the hangar with Dutchy and Jack in tow. Diana gets ready to go after them, but Steve stops her.
"I need you to stay here and protect everyone else," He says and Diana frowns.
"Why must I do that?" She asks, "Why can't I help?"
"Because, they need protection," Steve says and Diana raises an eyebrow.
"You are lying, Steve Trevor," Diana says and Steve bites his lip. She has caught him red handed. Diana pulls out her lasso and wraps it around Steve's wrist. Steve tries to keep in the truth but it is so hard. The lasso hurts so much.
"I love you," He manages to say and Diana cocks her head.
"Steve," Diana whispers softly and she lets the lasso fall away from his wrist, "You love me?"
"Yes, Diana Prince. I love you. I wish I could have told you sooner," He says and he runs off toward the hangar.
"Steve!" Diana shouts, but Steve keeps running. She marches over to Ace and sits next to her.
"Give him time, Diana. I don't think Steve has dated lots and lots of women. What he does doesn't really allow him to," Ace says and Diana still fumes.
"Why did he tell me he loves me if all he is going to do is leave?" Diana asks and Ace shrugs.
"I think he will show you that when there are not so many people around," Ace says with a wink. A few moments later, Dutchy waves the group out and directs them to the aircraft.
"What about the plans?" Diana asks Dutchy before she gets on the plane and Dutchy whispers in her ear,
"Mush has the plans for the weapons in that notebook. As long as you burn it once you get to New York, everything will be fine." Steve starts the airplane and the propeller roars to life.
"What about you? You are surely going to get caught," Diana worries, but Dutchy quiets her.
"I will be alright. As long as I die knowing that I helped someone potentially change the war," Dutchy says softly and Diana hugs him.
"I'm sorry," She whispers and Dutchy hugs her back. The two let go and Dutchy helps her into the plane. Dutchy and Steve shake hands and everyone in the plane can already hear the sounds of German artillery starting up. They are about to be in big trouble. Steve shuts the door and gets the plane moving. Diana sits down by Ace and the boys all sit in the back.
"Anybody want to play Poker?" Race asks and the other boys shrug.
"I'se gotta keep this notebook safe," Mush says and Race rolls his eyes.
"Ain't gonna make ya give major intel away, Mush," Race says and Jack calls back,
"The squadron is not allowed to gamble on the plane. Last thing we need is for all of you to get into a fight."
"Fights? Never," Race replies.
"You're forgetting about last week with you and Albert," Skittery says.
"I thought Mush was going to beat Romeo up for flirting with a girl before Mush got a chance to," Albert says.
"Skittery got really grumpy when I stole his pillow two days ago," Romeo admits.
"Albert fed this kitten that Race has been befriending through feeding him and Race was not happy," Mush says.
"Alright alright, I get the idea," Race says. The rest of the plane ride is relatively quiet. Steve refuels in London and the group flies over to Seattle where they land and refuel again. Finally, Steve flies them the rest of the way to a private military base. From there, the group buys train tickets and heads back to New York. Mush presents the notebook to one of the commanders there.
"Excellent find, Myers," He says and they put the notebook in safe keeping.
"A friend told me that we should destroy that as soon as we arrived here," Diana says and the commander shakes his head.
"I am going to hold onto it for safety reasons," He says and Steve raises his eyebrows, "but, I will destroy after we send some official military people over to destroy it." The commander gets on the telephone and quickly makes the call. "The army is going to dispatch a unit over there this evening to destroy it. Thank you for bringing that intel with you. Without it, the United States would have been destroyed by this war."
"Anytime. Just call us when the next assignment comes up," Steve says. Suddenly, a knock on the door distracts every one in the room. A man with a crutch and a kitten in his arms and a tall man stand on the other side of the door.
"Welcome back, everyone!" Davey Jacobs says excitedly and Jack hugs him. Crutchie hugs various all of the different boys and Ace. Diana is introduced to the two men and they hug her too.
"Now, tell us all about it," Crutchie says excitedly, letting Diana play with Patches. Patches purrs happily as Diana rubs her belly and listens to her involvement in the war being retold.
A Month Later....////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Life in New York City could not be better. Diana had gotten a job at the agency that had supported everyone in their last mission. Now that she had a steady job, Diana had moved into an apartment with Ace who later told Diana to call her Katherine. Katherine and Jack did not start dating because the war had not yet ended, but they were planning to go out on a date the day everyone was back in New York. Steve had moved back into the same place that Jack and all of the other boys were living. For the most part, Diana fights crime around the city and protects people as best as she can. The war continues to rage on, but the assassination attempt on the President was thwarted by the US Army. Everyone involved in the mission was thrilled when they saw that this had happened. Dutchy had written a letter from London as he had managed to sneak out of Germany and to some place safer. Everything seemed to be as good as it was going to be with a war raging on for the time being. Well, almost everything.
Steve and Diana have still not had any alone time. Diana is beginning to wonder if Steve really loves her or not. She is reading a magazine that Katherine recommended for her when a knock sounds on the door. She fixes the blouse that Katherine picked out for her and opens the door. Steve Trevor stands on the other side of the door. He smiles when he sees Diana and his eyes light up.
"Hello," Diana says with a cool tone to her voice. Steve notices and flinches a little bit.
"I know. I know. You're not the happiest with me," Steve replies and Diana crosses her arms.
"Not in the least," Diana says and Steve runs a nervous hand through his hair.
"Do you want to go get some ice cream? We had it once in London before we left," Steve reminds her and Diana nods.
"I would like that very much," Diana says and Steve loops his arm around hers. Diana locks up the apartment and the two walk through the busy New York streets. The cool night breeze gently tosses the loose curls that frame Diana's face. New York seems more relaxed this evening. Steve pulls Diana into a small ice cream parlor in downtown Manhattan. Diana orders a chocolate cone and Steve orders the same. The two of them sit across from each other in a small booth in the back of the parlor.
"I'm sorry I told I loved you and then I didn't do anything about it. I should have showed it more than I did," Steve says and Diana smiles at him.
"I was angry, but I forgive you. My angry feelings were spurred because of my feelings of love for you," Diana admits and Steve chuckles. The two talk about various things happening and Diana brings up Dutchy.
"Yeah, Dutchy was smart. I'm glad he got out before the Germans figured him out," Steve says and Diana smiles.
"He is very clever. Is he coming home to New York anytime soon?" Diana asks and Steve shrugs.
"Maybe," He says and the two watch the sunset. They finish their ice cream and Diana smiles.
"Whoever invented ice cream should be proud. They have created something beautiful," Diana says and Steve chuckles.
"Yeah, they did. Want to go see my favorite place in the whole city?" Steve asks and Diana nods. She eats the last bit of her cone and the two of them hurry out the door. Steve leads Diana through the busy streets and he takes her to a tree that faces a lake. The breeze off the lake rustles Diana's hair and makes her snuggle closer to Steve. Steve and Diana lean up against the tree. Her hair occasionally blows into his face, but he doesn't mind. Finally, he decides to show her he loves her. Steve brushes the hair out of Diana's face.
"I love it here. It is so beautiful," Diana says and Steve smiles.
"It is. And it is the perfect place for the start of something beautiful. Diana, would you want to be my girlfriend?" Steve asks.
"Yes, Steve. I would love to be your girlfriend," Diana says and she kisses him. Steve kisses her back and wraps his arms around Diana's waist. As they kiss, both of them realize that they really do love each other and that this is the start of something beautiful.
AN:/ Oh goodness. Hi, friends. Wow, this one is ridiculously long. So sorry about that. Would you believe me if I told you that I wrote all of this in one day? I did. Well like 98% of it. And now I am going to go read a book or finish watching Back to the Future Part 2. Yeah, or maybe I'll watch Part I again. I don't know. What did you guys think of this one? Did you like it? Feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments. I really am proud of the way this one turned out. I had a blast writing it!!!! All of the couples were really fun to write and I feel like all of these characters work really well together. This situation does not happen in the movie and this storyline is not going to be in my book. I am doing something different for the actual book. Thank you for reading, voting, commenting, or doing whatever it is you do! I hope you enjoyed it and see you all around!!
