Chapter 8
Nick couldn't make it but ten steps until having another coughing spasm. He really was in bad shape. I just wished I could help him and fix him all up in a heartbeat. He was so kind, caring, hopeful, and well, attractive. I couldn't let a guy like him fade away from this Earth. You don't find many good guys anymore. Every time he coughed, it hurt him. He felt more and more pain and grew more and more tired. He just wanted it to stop.
As he bent over and coughed, I rested my hand on his back to try and comfort him. "I'm sorry, Nick. I really wish we could fix you up within a snap. We're almost to the tunnel, don't worry," I tried to put on a smile for him.
"You're so trusting. Stop feeling sorry for me," he said softly. "I'll only ever let you down. I'm warning you because I care, Renee."
Being the hopeful guy he is, I never thought he'd say he'd only let me down, meaning he was never going to recover. Maybe he was only telling the truth. His body is damaged to the limit and he shouldn't have made it this far, just like the others.
"Aww, come on. Don't be like that, Nick. Cheer up! You're on your way to recovery, remember? Don't put your guard down like that," I said as he stood up straight again.
We continued to walk until we finally find the hole Wyatt and I crawled out of several hours ago. As I started to crawl down first, Wyatt grabbed my shoulder to stop me.
"What if they see us through the window of that cabin? Who knows how much trouble we could get in if they found out we've been up here!" Wyatt said slightly worried. There was still plenty of daylight, meaning it definitely wasn't 10PM yet.
I crawled back up onto the ground again. "You're right. We'll have to wait until ten o'clock. That way, they are for sure gone and we can safely go back down."
We sat down cross-legged in a circle shape. All three of us had many conversations together. We played games, like two truths and one lie or truth or dare.
"Renee, do you like Nick?" He asked as he wiggled his eyebrows, responding to my truth.
"Umm... I guess so," I answered. I mentally smacked myself inside. I should have just lied. That could have made my life ten times easier.
Nick smiled and blushed before asking Wyatt for his truth or dare. Throughout the rest of the game, Nick would keep glancing at me and I would keep glancing back.
After a while more of playing, Wyatt pulled Nick by his arm and walked a few feet away, Wyatt whispering, "Dude, she likes you. Make a move."
He wasn't very quiet about it because I threw a rock at his leg, making him shut up, Nick chuckling.
Later, we all laid down by each other on the ground, staring up at the stars. I was in the middle, Nick on my right and Wyatt on my left. It was so beautiful. I hadn't seen the stars or moon since four years ago when I was thirteen years old.
"I love them," I said as I watched the stars twinkle.
"They are beautiful. One lucky thing about staying up here during this crisis is that the sun, clouds, moon, and stars never seem to go away. So, there is a little bit of beauty left up here," Nick said, looking at me and smiling as I turned my head look back at him.
I looked back up at the stars. "We can't see any of that living underground," I said, disappointed.
"Well, obviously!" Wyatt blurted.
"Shut up, idiot!" I sat up and yelled.
Wyatt looked at his watch after a few moments of silence. He said it was already 10:30PM and we could get going now. We were hanging out by the tunnel, so we only had to walk a few steps before sliding down the slide.
"Woah," Nick looks around in amazement once we reach the end.
The cabin's candle lights were blown out, meaning no one was in there. It was a good thing because we really didn't want anyone seeing we secretly knew about their tunnel.
"Should we rush Nick to the hospital or finally check out this suspicious cabin?" Wyatt asked as we walked around to the other side where the door was. Nick agreed that he could wait until we were done exploring this cabin to bring him to the hospital. Besides, he said he was curious as to what was inside too.
Wyatt was the first one of us to step inside, then we followed. Across the counters and tables were scattered documents and files. We walked into the next room behind the kitchen.
"What's that?" Nick asked, pointing to a trapdoor-like door on the floor.
