Chapter 5
"Look," he responded. I opened my eyes and he pointed ahead of us. The candle lights beaming through the windows showed us a dark, wonky circle in one of the edges. We crawled over to it, reaching out our arms, expecting to be touching the firm, dirt wall.
But no, our arms went through and we nearly lost our balance, toppling over.
"What is it?" I asked, looking into it.
Wyatt shrugged his shoulders in response. He told me to stay there, while he ran to his backpack, grabbing a flashlight, then returning back to me on his knees. He turned it on and craned his neck upwards to look through.
"It seems to be leading upwards. I can't see what's on the other side because it is up to far though," he said.
We both came to an agreement to go explore this mysterious tunnel, then check out the cabin later when his dad would be gone.
"You know... I used to be Christian, but that was before I found out there was an underground city where hell should be," he said, crawling upwards through the tunnel, me laughing at his comment behind him.
"I think this tunnel leads to the surface," he added.
"Of course it does, you roach!" I joke and laugh. What was actually funny about this tunnel is that this wasn't the one everyone entered through four years ago. It was a second tunnel, or third. God, who knows how many there could be? It was a coincidence how this tunnel led to the surface, no one knew about it, and it was right by one of the government's buildings, which the people also didn't know about. After they made everyone come down here, they closed off the main tunnel and we all thought that was the only one, but it wasn't. The government has had access to the surface this entire time!
Wyatt stopped. "Ow!" He yells, rubbing his head. He ended up bumping his head on a thick piece of metal, pretty much like a sewer cap. He lifted it up and crawled out, me following and doing the same.
We were at the surface, where people originally lived on Earth.
