Chapter 4
I woke up, startled, to a knock at our door. I tilted my head, pushing the messy hair out of my face to look at my clock. I'm sure the time isn't even right because we can't see the sun or moon anyways, but it read 7:03AM. I usually didn't wake up until around 8AM and nobody certainly would usually knock on our door before then.
I walked through the curtain that separated mine and my dad's rooms, making my way to the door. I opened the door and rubbed my eyes with my free hand. To my surprise, it was Wyatt. He never came to my door.
"I have an exciting mission for us today," he smiled wide.
I shut the door on him without saying anything and walked to my room, leaving him outside. I quietly opened my dresser drawers so I wouldn't wake up my dad. I slipped on a pair of skinny jeans, a jade green t-shirt, and an older pair of Vans before brushing my mid-length, brown, wavy hair and rushing through the door. Wyatt was still there, as expected.
"So, what's the plan?" I asked.
"Well, for forever, I never knew what my dad's job was. I made it a point to wake up at four in the morning and follow, in my pajamas, him as he rode his bike to work. He rode to a large cabin that sits on a part of the outer edges that we haven't explored yet. That's not all, it is the only building over there, in the darkest part of the underground," he said, tapping his chin as if he was capable of thinking or something.
I looked at him with a blank stare, not really knowing what his point was and what he was getting at. Wyatt stared at me back for a few moments before speaking up again, finally getting the message of 'and?' from my expression.
"And I was thinking we could go to this mysterious cabin and see what his secret job is..." He widened his eyes and waved his hand in a circle, trying to get the point across me as if I'm the one who never made sense.
"Okay, there you go," I laughed. "Now lead me to this mysterious cabin!"
He picked up his backpack full of things that we need the least for this adventure. We walked away from the motel and we follow wherever Wyatt was leading us, the junk inside of his backpack clanking around every time he takes a step, as we laugh and joke around. Today, we were filled with motivation. He said it was going to be a great mission, so I was in a rush to see where this would take us.
"Hey, slow down!" I'd hear Wyatt yell from a few feet behind me as I would continue to speed walk, hoping I was going in the right direction since he was supposed to be the one leading the way.
He caught up to me once again. "You didn't eat breakfast, so I actually came prepared today," he smiled wide.
I made an excited puppy face, batting my eyelashes, signaling for him to get whatever food he had out of his backpack. He reached into his backpack as we kept walking. He pulled out a glazed donut and an orange and gave them to me. I squealed in excitement, immediately taking the food from his hands and shoving my mouth full.
"Are you sure you know where we are headed to?" I asked, wiping the crumbs off of my face.
"Yeah, we are almost there. See the little bit of light in that blanket of darkness?" He pointed. I followed his finger. He really was serious! I'd never seen that before.
We kept getting closer and closer. Wyatt quietly took off his backpack, leaning it against a large rock so he wouldn't make noise while we walked anymore. Before we knew it, we were peaking through the dimly lit windows of this large cabin.
His dad, he worked for the government. The people who wouldn't let my mother join her family down underground.
We figured this out because there were badges and framed documents everywhere.
"Well, should we go inside or not?" Wyatt was itching to go snoop around, but so was I.
"We have to wait until your dad leaves to go home. We don't want to be caught in there. What time does he usually come home from work?" I asked, whispering, still peaking through the windows.
"Ten at night," he answered.
We left my house at 7:15ish and it was now about 8AM. It didn't take too long to walk to the farther outer edges. But now we had to wait until ten at night to do the real exploring?! I was already so over this...
We walked to the backside of the cabin, lean against the wall, and slide against it until we met the dirt. I closed my eyes, knowing we'd have to wait forever.
Wyatt tapped my arm. "Uhh, Renee," he said with a bit of surprise in his voice.
"Hmm?" I muttered, my eyes still closed.
