Chapter 2

"Renee, what are you doing?" My father asked, rocking in his chair.

I stopped in my tracks, standing with the door to our motel-like room half opened, ready to go explore again.

"Uhh, nothing. Just the usual," I smiled innocently.

"The usual, meaning getting into trouble, being the curious person you are?" If he wasn't so unamused and emotionless all of the time, I'm guessing he would have smirked, knowing he was absolutely right.

He shooed me away with his hand, signaling to go ahead and leave anyway. I walked out of our room, outside. There were a few motel-like buildings down here. Every family got their own room, some smaller families sharing with other small families. The government tried to get everyone to fit down here, but as I said, not everyone could make it.

Some could call me mischievous or a trouble-maker. I would call myself adventurous and a truth finder. I found this whole situation so suspicious and I always thought the government was hiding something. I mean, shoving as many people as possible underground forever makes a lot of sense if you're a suspicious federal worker. Not to me, it didn't make enough sense. I wanted the truth.

One thing I've found suspicious and I've been questioning for a while is, how do we get our food? Plants can't grow down here, there's no sunlight. We have no animals down here either. Especially because they eat plants which can't grow down here, meaning the animals can't grow. My good friend, Wyatt, who really doesn't think his theories through, thinks that they make it with like a printing machine. Anyways, do they just have a never-ending food supply? Do they have access to Earth above us and are getting food from there?

Today, I was planning on finding more evidence. It can't be that hard trying to figure out the government's secrets, can it?
