It was many years ago
And yet not so far away
That King Thror loved gold far too much
His hoard bigger by the day.
None said much as he sat
For he was good on the throne,
But then that all soon changed
For they found the Arkenstone.
It glowed and twinkled blue
As it corrupted the dwarf king's head
Dragonsickness caught a hold
And rendered him near dead
Thror refused to give the elves
Even a bit of what he owned
He fell from their favor
And they swore that he'd atone.
And then one day, in the skies
A dragon from the north.
Smaug and death come as a pair,
And so they came to Erebor.
Young Thorin was on the ramparts
And sounded the alarm
That day the line of Durin
Would come to no harm.
And yet the same cannot be said
For the other dwarves that lay
Dead in a solemn tomb
Where they rest to this day.
Some escaped the dragonfire
The spindly grasp of death
They ran to the world of men
Gasping for their breath
Thranduil, Elven King,
upon his mighty steed:
Turned his armies away, refused to help,
Paid the dwarves no heed.
Thorin saw him turn away
And called out even then
But No help would come from the elves
So he turned then, to the men.
And yet no help came from Dale,
For the city began to die
Smaug picked off the people one by one
A demon from the sky.
So with his stomach satisfied
The dragon fell asleep
But the Golden Treasure of Erebor
Was always his to keep.
The dwarves lived as they could
Scattered across the lands
Working where they might find jobs,
Using their crafted hands.
And then a battle to recover Moria,
And the mines that lay in dust
But Azog the Defiler stood in the way
His weapons free of rust
He swore to end the line of Durin
And managed to kill Thror,
Thrain was gone, Thorin stood still
Ready to fight more.
Him with an Oaken shield,
His dwarves still fighting on,
He faced Azog alone
His spirit almost gone.
Thorin defeated Azog that day
And felt yet bitter loss
Dwarves had won that war
But at a bloody cost.
And so Thorin was left
A king without his hope
He stayed that way for many years
Finding ways to cope.
But then Gandalf came along
He came as a friend.
So Thorin and his kin journeyed
To meet in Bag End.
They had a map and key,
And knew of a secret door
They spoke in hushed whispers
About the glory of Erebor.
And while Bilbo was reluctant
For the Dwarves had just barged in,
He joined as their Burglar
As the fourteenth man of kin.
They walked on paths of stone
That soon changed unpaved
They confronted trolls and orcs
And went into a cave
It led to the Hidden Valley
Magical Rivendell
Though Thorin was unwilling
Elrond took them well.
They rested up, recovered,
Translated the ancient runes.
They ate their fill of vegetables
And listened to elven tunes.
And as Gandalf met with Elrond
Saruman and Galadriel,
The dwarves went off on their own
Fearing no evil.
They ran into some goblins
But Bilbo had escaped
He fell into a cavern
Where for years Gollum laid in wait.
A game of riddles then occurred,
As Bilbo found a ring.
Where up above Gandalf had killed
The evil goblin king.
The dwarves ran out of the caves
And saw Bilbo was gone.
But then, he was there,
And orcs appeared against the dawn.
A brief battle then took place
As Azog smiled grim.
His hunt was now near done,
But then the eagles flew on in.
The dwarves up in the evergreens
Or in the burning brush.
Rescued and placed upon a stone
As towards The Mountain flew a thrush.
But as they ran, still orcs were there,
And then the one, Beorn.
A skinchanger, the last one left
Had looked at them with scorn.
He hated dwarves, but orcs still more,
So he helped them with their needs.
And so the group rode to Greenwood
On Beorn's mighty steeds.
A sickness lay on the woods,
Spiders in the dark.
Gandalf left but dwarves still stood,
By the black twisted bark.
Mirkwood, it was called now,
And none dared venture through.
But the Company had no choice
As orcs would be there soon.
"Stay on the path!" Gandalf had yelled
And the dwarves, they did their best.
But soon they began to tire,
And the enchanted river did the rest.
Spiders then wrapped up the bunch,
But Bilbo stayed behind.
He rescued them from certain death
And elves they soon would find.
Bilbo followed silently
As the dwarves were locked in cages
Prisoners of The Elven King,
To be left throughout the ages.
Bilbo waited with the guards
As they filled all up with wine.
He snagged the keys, got dwarves free,
And got them to the cellar fine.
He put them all in barrels
And dumped them in the river.
He soon followed and elves pursued,
Emptying their quivers
But they all missed and soon orcs joined in
And the dwarves were all but forgot.
They managed to get through the gate
But not before Kili was shot.
They got out near Laketown,
And patched him up best they could.
They asked Bard to smuggle them,
He replied that he would.
Then arriving in the Laketown
A stench of fish surrounds.
The men of the town bow
To the King Underground.
While most dwarves left mountain-bound,
Still some stayed behind.
For Kili was deathly ill
And not in his right mind.
With Bard arrested for aiding the dwarves
And Elves come to aid
Kili's healed and eyes turn to the mountain
Where so begins the raid
"Stand by the grey stone as the thrush knocks, and the last light of autumn shall shine upon the keyhole"
And by the moon of Durin's Day
The secret door appears
And Bilbo walks into
The source of Dwarrowkind's tears
And as he lay his eyes upon
The vast and cursed mounds
So begins the Arken-search
Filled with silent sounds
But not so sneaky underfoot
Is our Hobbit, so it seems
He breaks Smaug's slumber, long was kept
Among those golden beams
over gold they crept, a silent hunt
Barrel-rider, Under-Hill and all the rest
The Arkenstone slipped away
In his coats and under vest.
Thorin had been changed though,
And Bilbo had to lie
He kept the stone hidden
And went right on by.
Now the dwarves started up the forges
And covered Smaug in gold.
He grew enraged, quite impatient
And left the dwarvish hold.
He flew up into sky
as the gold rained down
His fire soon to be upon
Unassuming Laketown.
But the people saw, and so they fled,
Their burning hearts so full of dread.
The dwarves escaped with Bard's children
But Bain had to go
His father now upon the tower
Above the flaming homes
Bain had a Black Arrow
For none but that could pierce Smaug's hide
and time ran out
As Bain reached Bard's side
His aim flew straight, it's path was clear
And Smaug the Great soon fled
But it was too late, black was his tongue,
And now Smaug the Mighty is dead
Oh Dragonslayer, Black-Arrow shooter
Your name forever known
Dwarf-Friend, Oh Laketown Savior,
Turn to the Mount of Stone.
When Laketown residents called for aid
Disease had taken hold
Even Elven armies couldn't part
Stubborn Thorin of his gold.
And not even when young Bilbo
Gave the Arkenstone to Bard
Would Thorin Oakenshield
Put down his prideful guard.
So the threats flew between the sides
Before Dain came to Thorin's call
His goats and his warriors
Prepared for their King to fall.
The elves and dwarves didn't fight long,
For Azog's army and his trolls
Brought them together
To fight the evil foes.
Still Thorin stayed shut up,
His allies fought instead
Bilbo wishing quite a lot
That He was at home in bed.
As the ruins of Dale burned once more,
And the elves drew away
The dwarves built up a last defence
Keeping the orcs at bay.
But then, Hark! The king prevails!
The Company fights on.
The dwarves rallied to their King
Until the orcs were nearly gone.
But up above on Ravenhill,
Azog gave commands
Thorin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili
Went up to take the land.
Brothers went to scout the tower
As all was silent still
As soon great grief would come upon
The outlook of Ravenhill.
But it was a trap, and Bilbo came
To warn the four brave souls
But twas too late, brothers gone
And from the north came ghouls.
Fili died a noble death
By Azog's sword, no less
But the Line was falling, as did he
His brother in distress.
Kili next, his rage blinding
He fought so hard for his brother,
Who would be by his side,
For Kili knew no other.
Then Thorin fought on that ice
Til Azog slipped under
Then a desperate act to save his kin
And put an end to his life and Azog's plunder.
So Thorin lay wounded
With his hobbit by his chest,
The eagles flying in the sky
High above the rest.
Orcrist has served him well,
Goblin-cleaver had slain fast,
But Thorin wished that he'd lived see his family
Once more before he passed.
He knew they'd won, but still Bilbo wept
For he'd lost his greatest friend
He thought that Thorin would be there with him
Until the very end.
As Bilbo watched Beorn fight
With Radagast the Brown
Even the Rabbits of Rhoscobel
Couldn't shake his frown.
So all was done, The war was won
But still the mood was grim
Candles lighted for King Thorin
And the sister-sons of him.
Dain crowned next, Long Live The King,
The next King Under the Mountain
Dain was crowned in a lighted hall,
'Neath a golden fountain.
The Lonely Mountain stood
And lived up to its name
For although the Company was strong
A feeling of despair came.
Bilbo left soon after,
to return to his books
For Thorin had wished that for him
With the final breaths he took.
We miss him beyond measure
And wish they'd all been healed,
But, long live the legacy
Of Thorin Oakenshield.
