Act Naturally - The Beatles {Song-Shot 4 of 4}
A/N Song-shot 4 of 4 in honor of the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in the U.S.
----------
We’ll make a film about a man that’s sad and lonely, and all I gotta do is act naturally.
----------
“Congratulations, sir, you’re the new lead for our movie,” the big movie executive said to the man with a smile. “We’re going to start filming in a month. We’ll send the script to your place so you can read your lines.”
“Okay, thank you,” the man said. It didn’t really faze him though. Everyone who knew him knew that he was perfect for the role, and they had told him that all the time.
“We’ll call you later to tell you anything you need to know, Richard,” the executive said.
Richard said, “Oh, by the way, I prefer using my stage name.” He began to say this name he preferred, but was cut off by the executive, who didn’t seem amused by the interesting name that he had chosen.
“We’d prefer you didn’t, Richard. We’ll call you soon,” the executive said. He turned his chair, giving Richard the idea that he was dismissed.
Richard got up from the table and left the building, not saying anything. He walked down the street to the bus stop, and waited there for the vehicle to come down the street and pick him up so he could get back to his apartment.
The bus came barreling down the street and slowed to a stop in front of him. He got on, paid for the ride, and took a seat. His mind was on the movie, though. He was going to be in the movies. He was going to be a big star.
And all of it was because of his life being lonely and sad. That was the only reason he had been able to ace the audition. It was only because he was living the life of the character he had auditioned for that he even got the role. If he hadn’t been the way he was, it would have gone to some famous celebrity who could pretend that these were his real feelings.
After ten minutes of a bus ride, he got off the bus and went up to his second floor apartment. As soon as he got inside, he went to the phone to call his parents to tell him the incredible news.
“Hello?” his mother asked her when he called him. “Richard? How are you?”
“I’m good, Mom. I have something amazing to tell you,” Richard answered.
“What is it?”
“I got the part. I’m going to be in the movies,” Richard said, a huge grin gracing his face as he spoke.
“Really?” Richard’s mother sounded surprised. “I’m so proud of you!” she exclaimed. On the other end of the line, she was smiling, truly proud of her son for making it.
“Thanks, Mom,” Richard smiled.
“What’s the movie about?” Richard’s mother inquired. “I think you told me, but I forgot.”
“It’s okay, Mom. It’s all about a man named Michael, and he’s getting over a bad breakup.” Richard chuckled a bit. “Yeah, I know it’s the stereotypical girly movie plot stuff,” he said.
“I love those movies,” Richard’s mother reminded him.
“Oh, right,” Richard said softly. “Anyway, it’s about him, and how he’s dealing with it as he goes through life. It’s supposed to be a message about how life seems tough, but we can get over it.”
“That sounds like a movie you would need to see if you weren’t in it,” she said, joking with her.
“Mom!”
“I’m just kidding. But it sounds good,” she said.
“Thanks Mom,” Richard said. “To be honest, all I gotta do is act naturally, and I’ve got this part down.”
“You’ll find someone soon, Richard,” she assured him. “You’re a good man. There’s a girl just waiting for you to show up and make her happy.”
“We’ll see, Mom.”
----------
“Maddie, wait, please,” Richard pleaded, on his knees. “Don’t leave me.”
“Maddie” just gave him a look of complete disgust. “There’s nothing you can do, Michael. I’m gone.” She then walked out the door.
“And cut!” The director yelled. “Perfect job, you two. I’m very impressed.” He looked Richard straight in the eyes. “I can feel your pain. No other actor has seemed so truly sad and lonely besides you. You have a real gift.”
“Thanks…” Richard said softly, but he knew it was no gift.
“Alright, take five. We’ll be filming the emotional phone call after the break. I need my Reese and my Carter on set for the next scene,” the director called.
Richard walked off set, only to be met by the actress playing Maddie. “Hey, Richard?” the girl asked.
Richard looked at her. “Oh, hey Elise,” he said, calling her by her real name.
“Your performance...absolutely incredible. I just thought I should let you know,” Elise said.
“Thanks,” Richard said again.
Elise smiled at him. “Well, I’ve got to go. See you later on set,” she said, and ran off before Richard could say more.
Richard sighed. He was acting naturally all right, but now he wished he wasn’t sad and lonely, especially after he watched Elise leave him after saying all of four short sentences to him. Elise was the girl. Elise was the one he was thinking of now. But she wasn’t there for him. She didn’t care. She didn’t even know the truth about how he was good enough for the role. He felt even more sad and lonely, knowing nobody except his mother knew his secret.
As he acted throughout the rest of the movie, no matter what people thought, he was acting naturally.
