Pigeon

Okay, who decided, "Hey, look at that majestic, swaggering bird. Let's run after it, watching it fly away is so fun!!"

A big jerk. That's who.

The little kids have some sort of excuse. The crushing, staring eyes of society have not yet pierced them. But it's those older children, who look me straight in the eyes, look at their parents, back at me, take one step after another and watch me fly away.

What's wrong with them?

I'm just a pigeon. All I want in life is to eat week-old crumbs of bread and peck at them and toss my head around violently then watch it sail off before pecking at it again. Is that too much to ask?

Not really. I've always seen people with dogs on the streets. The dogs are mostly polite, giving me a respectful nod before bounding off after a stick. Humans have learnt to live beside those fluffy beasts. Why not pigeons, too? Pigeons could teach society a few things.

Oh, look. A nice human. She's giving us bread.

Did I mention that there are nice humans? They feed us, and for some reason delight in watching us crowd around them. I don't go this time, for fear of betrayal and getting chased away by some malevolent child. I can see the tension in my avian fellows. They're preparing for the loud bang that will send us rushing to nearby rooftops.

Today, however, it doesn't come. But I've realised something.

I'm tired of living in fear! I'll move to the countryside! I'll become a country bird!

But first... to get rid of those pesky humans...

Thousands of pigeons swarm together to hear my speech. They all coo in agreement.

Tomorrow, friends, tomorrow.

We're waiting for the time to strike.

Just you wait.
