Chapter 11
"Ahsoka, Lyra, I found the last bomb."
"Stay there, I'll get the bomb squad." I instructed to the Senator, running down the corridors with the young Togruta by my side. "We have an emergency, Senator Amidala has found the last bomb" I slid into the room with the bomb squad in a hurry.
"You heard her, we gotta move!" Ahsoka shouted at the men, urging them to follow. The next few moment went by quickly. We ran down the dark halls into Padmés last location where she held a bomb carefully in her gentle hands.
"Here" she gently handed it over to the bomb squad as they set to work.
"Are you okay Senator?" Ahsoka stood next to the woman while we all stood back and watched the team work on defusing the bomb. Padmé gave a small nod but everyone tensely stood beside each other in anticipation for what would happen in the next few moments.
"Deactivated. Plenty of time to spare." The bomb squad member reported, cutting the last bomb at the last possible second.
"Plenty of..." Jar Jar faints.
"Ahsoka, are you there?" Anakin's voice sounded through coms after a moment of silence.
"I'm here, Master. The bomb has been deactivated. Did you find Vindi?"
"Deactivated as well. Have you seen Padmé?"
"She's right next to me. I'm okay too, thanks for asking." Ahsoka sassed back.
"Good, start the clean up. Obi Wan and I are going to take Dr Vindi to a prison where he belongs." Anakin sneered darkly.
"On it Skyguy" Ahsoka responded before we exited the room and went to secure the rest of the base.
"Stay with him" I pointed a trooper towards Jar Jar who was still passed out on the ground. The group was less tense than before as we all moved to the regular securing of a base once captured. The familiar routine making me feel at ease momentarily.
After an hour of securing the base and alarm sounded out and I let out a sigh beside Ahsoka.
"Looks like we have to get back to work" I looked down to her tiredly.
"We never get any rest" she sighed with a slight smirk. The smirk was wiped off her face quickly as an explosion rocks the base. "Lyra?" She looked to me with worried eyes this time, reaching out to steady herself.
"Captain what's going on?" I stepped up to Rex, taking on a stern command over the situation below Naboo.
"Virus leak. Get to the safe room. Come on!" Rex ordered the team around us in the corridor. Looking over my shoulder I took note of the blue gas chasing after us at a fast speed.
"Let's go!" I urged, taking off running with the others as doors around us closed shut tightly to contain the leak.
"There's the safe room! No chance!" A clone shouted as we neared it, doors closing and gas speeding after us.
"Hurry! The doors are closing!" Rex shouted to his men.
"Don't worry." I held the doors open with the force, stopping my running. "Ahsoka a little help!"
"Get inside Captain!" She told him while helping to hold the doors open. He climbed through with the others, attempting to keep it open for us.
"Hurry!" Rex called out. We both nodded to each other, dropping our arms, running and diving through the slit in the door, making it inside at the last possible moment.
"Ahsoka what is going on down there?" Anakin demanded answers from his Padawan while I checked on the group who had made it into the room.
"The droids released the virus, but we managed to seal the lab." The Togruta explained, looking around at the men who had raced into the room with us.
"And Padmé?"
"Haven't heard from her since the bomb." I answered this time, after noting that her and a few others were missing.
"We are going to find a cure, don't let those doors open until we get back" Anakin ordered.
"Yes, Master" Ashoka ended the call after that.
"No, no, no! Some of the virus got in here. We didn't close the door fast enough." A clone panicked as he checked the levels in the room. I sighed and looked around, trying to think of what our next step should be as Ashoka and I were the highest ranking personal in the base at the moment.
"We may be dead men, but we could still stop those droids." Captain Rex looked to Ahsoka and I for further instructions.
"Don't worry, my Master will find a cure for this virus. We're not dead yet." Ahsoka reminded us with her hopeful manner. I only looked down to her and hoped that we could hold out until they returned with a cure.
"Is anyone out there? Can anyone hear—" Padmé started through the com link.
"Senator Amidala, we're trapped in the safe room at the end of complex 'B'." I reported to the woman.
"We'll be right there. Are you contaminated?" She started to worry towards the end. Ahsoka and I turned to face two clones who had began coughing in fits.
"I'm afraid so." I replied sadly, my head hanging low slightly, thinking I had failed everyone in this room.
"Senator Amidala, where are you?" Ahsoka asked as the men continued to cough.
"We're right outside your safety room." She told us.
"Can you get the door open?" The young girl questioned.
"Go ahead, Jar Jar." Padme allowed him to press the button and open the door, allowing the blue shadow virus to fill the room. The pair entered in yellow hazmat suits as they made their way towards us.
"I'm sorry, Ahsoka, Lyra." She placed a hand on the younger girls shoulder to comfort her.
"Don't worry about us, Senator. We still have a job to do." I reminded, not focusing on the bad parts but instead the mission at hand.
"There aren't very many droids left. We saw some heading toward the south entrance." The senator explained the situation outside.
"As long as we're able, we'll help you destroy those droids before they breach the compound." Ahsoka promised as Rex handed Senator Amidala a blaster to protect herself.
"You take the north corridor, and we'll take the south." She ordered everyone. A few clones went with her while Rex, Ashoka and two more came with me. We all ran our separate ways into battle, taking out droids until we met back with the other group under one of the hatches.
"Stop!" Rex pointed a blaster towards the droid at the top of the ladder.
"Don't open that hatch!" Padmé called up.
"Ha! Too late!" Before the droid had a chance they shot it down, falling right between us all.
Two droidekas rolled in and started firing at us in the heat of battle. We ignited our sabers while the others took cover from the blaster fire. Running forward together me and the young Togruta jumped on top of the droids and drove our sabers into them harshly.
"This-a help." Jar Jar held a blaster, I looked up with fear at what he was about to do.
"Jar Jar no!" Padme steps in to warn. He shoots anyway and Padme tackled him down to prevent anyone from getting hurt, but in the process she pulls out a tube on her suit that was filtering air to her.
"Senator!" Ahsoka worried for the woman. I nodded to her to go check on Padmé while I took out the last droid. Pulling my saber out and jumping back to land on the ground again I rushed towards the group and the Senator.
"Senator, your suit's been compromised." Rex told her, noting the loose tube. She gasped as she noticed her broken suit.
"I'm so sorry." Ahsoka apologized as Padmé took off her helmet, giving into the fact that she was now infected.
"Don't blame yourself. These things tend to happen in a war zone." Padme reminds the young Padawan calmly.
"We should keep moving, I'm sure more droids are trying to escape." I reminded the team, pulling Senator Amidala to her feet. I stumbled back a bit and let out a cough at the strength it took from me to fight off droids.
"Commander, you alright there?" Rex looked to me. I gave him a curt nod, following as Ashoka lead us down another hall.
"How are you doing up there?" I heard a droid ask another.
"I'm almost through."
"There they are!" Ahsoka found the droids trying to escape. I rushed to help her but fell to the ground roughly in my weak state.
"Careful commander" the Captain warned, helping me to stand and keeping me upright. Ashoka cut up the droid at the bottom of the ladder before forcepulling the other droid right into her saber.
"Ahsoka!" Padme worried as the young girl held onto the ladder for balance, the virus starting to effect her too.
"I'm all right." She claimed, looking back at us.
"It's getting worse" I warned the group. "We should get back and rest until the others arrive" I stand up a bit more and with Rex's help, leading the group back to the safety room we were in before.
"Master, can you hear me?" Ahsoka commed our masters.
"R2, amplify the signal." Anakin ordered as his Padawan spoke weakly.
"Destroyed all the battle droids inside the compound, Master. Naboo is safe from further contamination. I repeat; Naboo is safe." I continued for her as we both ended in coughs, holding onto each other for balance as we moved away from the transmitter, allowing Padmé to take over for us.
"Promise me that no one will ever open this bunker. Goodbye Anakin, I- " Padme cuts in but begins to cough as the comm shuts down. We tried to help as best we could, keeping the clones alive for as long as we could.
"What a waste." Padmé claimed, looking to a clone sorrowfully.
"With all due respect, Senator, It's what these men were born to do." Rex sighed as he laid down a dead clone, gently and respectfully placing a cloth over his dead body.
"I hope that their sacrifice brings us closer to peace." She stated before she caught the attention of Ahsoka and I coughing violently.
"It will, Padmé." Ahsoka started as she attempted to stand up.
"You must believe that..." I tried to finish for her but we both fell unconscious as we were to weak.
"Ahsoka! Lyra!" Padme rushed over to catch the small Togruta while Rex caught me. Darkness was all I could see until I woke up to the feeling of laying down on what must have been a stretcher.
"Lyra" Obi Wan walked over to me as I was being carried away on a stretcher.
"Master?" I weakly opened my eyes but squeezed them shut at the bright light from the sun.
"I'm here, my Padawan. The medical droids expect you all to make a full recovery" he reported, knowing that would make me feel better.
"Thank you, master" I smiled as best I could. "I think someone else needs your help now" I told him before being carried away. He looked up to find Jar Jar struggling to take off his helmet and chuckled softly at how I noticed the Gungans struggles even while barely holding onto life.
