Chapter 02
"Ahsoka!" I called after her, finding her walking alongside a clone trooper in blue painted armour on an empty path. "Where is Master Skywalker?" I questioned when I caught up to the pair, Ahsoka supposed to be with her master.
"Back with the others. He sent me and Rex here to scout out the enemy" she cheered with excitement that brought a small smile to my face. How could the Jedi council allow a child of her age and training join the war?
"I'm Master Kenobis Padawan, Lyra Jayko" I introduced myself to the clone trooper, falling into step beside them and looking ahead.
"Captain Rex" he nodded, looking down at me with a faint smile before looking ahead again, helmet secured under his arm.
"Have you thought about moving that line back, Captain? They'd have better cover that way." I suggested as we all continued to walk ahead, surveying the area of the battlefield.
"Thanks for the suggestion, but General Skywalker thinks they're fine where they are." He shut down the idea, I nodded in understanding that he had to follow orders from General Skywalker and that I was in no position to oppose a Generals decision either.
"So, if you're a captain and I'm a Jedi then, technically, I outrank you, right?" Ahsoka questioned with a smirk.
"Ahsoka, that's not very nice" I scolded her, but he brushed it off calmly.
"It's fine" he told me. "In my book, experience outranks everything." He replied to the young child.
"Well, if experience outranks everything, I guess I better start getting some." She smiled happily before pausing at the sight ahead. "What's that?"
"Not good." I answered, a sternness falling over my tone.
"They've got an energy shield. That's gonna make things damn near impossible." Rex started. "If you wanted experience, little one it looks like you're about to get plenty."
"We have to report this to the Generals" I spun on my heel before marching back to the group at a quicker pace, the other two right beside me.
~~~
"The shield generator is somewhere in this area. They're slowly increasing the diameter, and keeping it just ahead of their troops." Kenobi pointed to the Holomap as we all stood around to observe the scans.
"Heavy cannons are gonna be useless against that." Rex sighed.
"As they get closer, I suppose we could try to draw them into the buildings. That might level the playing field a bit." My new Master continued to plan as I stood beside Ahsoka and Rex, watching and thinking.
"If that shield's gonna be such a problem, why don't we just take it out?" Ahsoka questioned as if it was the obvious answer.
"Easier said than done." Rex commented as I nodded in agreement.
"Well, I, for one, agree with her. Someone has to get to that shield generator and destroy it. That's the key." Anakin backed up his new Padawan.
"Right, then. Maybe you two can tiptoe through the enemy lines and solve this particular problem together." Obi Wan suggested to the pair.
"Can do, Master Kenobi" the young girl agreed quickly.
"I'll decide what we do." Anakin spoke up to her.
"If Rex, Lyra and I can engage them here you two might have a chance to get
through their lines undetected, here." Obi Wan points out.
"They won't have much time, the droids far outnumber us so our ability to street fight is limited without the use of heavy cannons. They will march forward under the protection of their shield. until they are right on top of our cannons, then they'll blow them away." Rex explained the flaw in the plan. I looked closely at the map as they continued to discuss a plan.
"We'll figure out a way. Come on, Master, let's go." Ahsoka walked off with Anakin following behind.
"If we survive this, Snips, you and I are gonna have a talk." He told her sternly, still within earshot of the rest of us.
"They make quite a pair, don't they, sir? You think they have a chance?" Rex asked Kenobi.
"They better."
"If they can't turn off that shield generator before it reaches the heavy cannons there'll be no escape for any of us. Now we need our own plan on how to hold their attention until they can take down the shields" I speak up, standing to face the men before me. We all nodded in agreement before moving back to the front of the battlefield to prepare for what's about to happen.
"That shield is certainly putting a crimp in my day." Obi Wan called out to the captain as we both peaked at the oncoming droids through binoculars.
"It's no use, sir! Even at full power the cannon doesn't affect it." Rex explains with little hope that we would make it through this.
"All right, Rex. It was worth a try. Tell the men to fall back!" My Master ordered. We had all moved back, Obi Wan and I deflecting the blasters from hitting our soldiers. I jumped over a small wall and pressed by back against it to take cover before I jumped in fear.
"Sorry, you scared me" I explained, the Captain turning his helmeted head to face me, having been there the whole time with me only just noticing his presence. Soon my Master had decided to join us in taking cover, sitting beside me.
"We're inside the shield. Just stay away from those tanks." Obi Wan ordered after a moment, igniting his lightsaber.
"A Jedi?" A droid panicked as Master Kenobi jumped down, followed shortly after by me and the troopers zipping in from one of the buildings above. I followed my masters lead and took out as many droids as I could with my bright green lightsabers. The two of us cut them down quickly allowing the others to fall back into a building.
"Where's the General? Or the commander?" Rex called out to his men as they retreated and gathered into a building.
"I don't know, sir!" A trooper brushed past in a hurry to take cover.
"Fall back!"
I had jumped in next to Obi Wan and we each took down a droid, pushing them back with the force. We were about to move on when a droid aimed its blaster at us. Before it could shoot Rex came running in and shot it down.
"They're right behind us, sir!" He shouted upon entry. "They wiped out most of my unit. We had to pull out of there." Another blast rushes us into hiding again as we duck behind a control panel system.
"The shield has almost reached the heavy cannons." I warned the duo next to me with urgency.
"We're not gonna be able to stop them, sir." Rex agreed.
"Move your troops back to the heavy cannons. Do everything you can to protect them. Lyra, go with him. I'll delay the droids." Kenobi told us both his orders.
"But—" Rex went to disagree.
"That is an order, Captain!" With my Masters orders we both stood and rushed back with his men. I blocked the troops from fire as best I could while they continued to shoot, moving backwards.
~~~
"Sir! General Kenobi's been captured! There's no one else left." A trooper rushed to take cover next to Rex and I in front of the cannons.
"What?" I started to panic thinking I had lost another Master and that it was just my bad luck with the force.
"We've got to hold out! We can't let that shield reach the cannons. Keep fighting!" Rex ordered his men sternly as I shook my head and prepared to fight some more. We jumped back out, me deflecting the blasts as the men shot at the incoming droids with no luck.
"There's too many of them!"
"Fall back, fall back!"
"Man down!" Men around me shouted as they ran behind and the shield closed in on us.
"Medic! We need a medic here!" I did my best to block the fire but eventually it became too much and a blaster shot had skimmed my arm. I shouted quickly in pain while griping at my arm, the flesh singed from the blast.
"Get back, commander!" Rex guided me behind a pile of rubble to take cover. "You need to stay down" he tried as I simply pulled off some fabric from my robes and began to tie it around my bicep.
"I will not give up on my men" I looked to him sternly before standing up and rushing in once more. He only sighed and shook his head as he watched me run into battle again with a smile, thank goodness for the helmet hiding his facial expressions. I fought back against the droids as best I could with a wounded arm and one lightsaber until I took note of the red shields falling.
"Commander Jayko, what's the status?" Rex had questioned from his spot near the cannons with the rest of his men.
"Captain! Shields down!" I called back to the man as I ran towards the troopers, once again taking cover with the survivors.
"All cannons, fire on those tanks!" They gave the orders and the cannons took out the army of droids.
"Look!" I smiled as I pointed to the incoming gunships above bringing us hope.
"Great job, Commander Jayko" Rex nodded to me before we split up to find our superiors.
~~~
"Master Obi-Wan. Master Yoda." Anakin and Ahsoka approached us as we stood at the base of the ramp to our ship.
"Trouble, you have, with your new Padawan, I hear." Yoda spoke in his gravely voice.
"I was explaining the situation to Master Yoda." Kenobi explained with a slight smirk.
"Really?"
"If not ready for a Padawan, you are, then perhaps, Obi Wan, we can..." Yoda trails off as Anakin stepped in.
"No, wait a minute. I admit Ahsoka is a little rough around the edges. But with a great deal of training, and patience she might amount to something."
"Then go with you, she will, to the Teth system." Yoda instructed.
"Teth? That's Wild Space. The droid army isn't even in that sector." Anakin questioned with confusion for why Yoda was sending them out there.
"Kidnapped, Jabba the Hutt's son has been."
"You want me to rescue Jabba's son?"
"Anakin, we'll need the Hutts' allegiance to give us an advantage over Dooku." Obi Wan explained the reasoning.
"Negotiate the treaty with Jabba, Obi Wan and Lyra will. Find the renegades that hold Jabba's son, your mission will be, Skywalker." Yoda continued to instruct.
"Come on, Master, it doesn't sound that hard. I'll find Rex and get the troops organized." Ahsoka rushed off with excitement.
"Don't worry, Anakin. Just teach her everything I taught you and she'll turn out fine." Obi Wan told his former Padawan with amusement in his tone.
"You know, something makes me think this was your idea from the start." The brunette walked off to find his new Padawan.
"Let's just hope Anakin is ready for this responsibility."
"Ready, he is, to teach an apprentice. To let go of his pupil, a greater challenge it will be. Master this, Skywalker must." Yoda said.
"If we've got to make a deal with Jabba the Hutt We'd best be on our way." Kenobi and I nodded to the small green man before walking off to our own ships.
~~~
Our fighters dropped out of hyperspace, leading us to the planet of Tatooine.
"Don't worry, I'm sure Jabba's in a good mood." Obi wan spoke as he felt my unease upon our arrival.
"I hope you're right, Master" I replied while flying towards the surface to land in front of Jabba's palace. Stepping out into the heat from the two sun we were met by a protocol droid.
"We should not keep the wise and powerful Jabba waiting." The droid spoke in its robotic voice.
"I wouldn't dream of it." My master had claimed, following the droid into the palace with me right behind them both. "Mighty Jabba, one of our most powerful Jedi is on his way to rescue your son. We will not let you down." He stood in front of the Hutt as he spoke. I had been standing slightly behind as I observed my Masters negotiation techniques. The response from Jabba was translated by the droid who had lead us in.
"The most gracious Jabba has one more small condition. He demands you bring back the slime who kidnapped his little punky muffin."
"Punky?" I questioned, trying to keep a straight face while looking to Obi Wan who simply shrugged it off.
"Dead or alive. If you do not succeed, Count Dooku and his droid army will." The droid translated once again.
