Chapter 02 "First Change
These next few moments happened in such a mixed blur, so I'll try to explain them as currently and accurately as I can. As I look down at my hands, which are now turning from a dark purplish blue to a midnight black, the usual aching I've been feeling, returns throughout my entire body, but at the equivalent pain to being shot. I cower down in pain, Carla placing a hand on my back as she lowers with me.
"Shawn! You alright?" Carla says. I'm in too much pain to respond. Before Carla can react, or before I can, I mindlessly run away through the back door, which was surprisingly, and conveniently open. I continue to run through our yard and into the woods.
[Carla's POV]
"Shawn! You alright?" I say, leaning down as Shawn cowers in what looks like a terrible pain. Without warning, Shawn takes off. "Shawn!" I say, taking a few steps towards the direction he took off in, he's already out the back door and running to the woods. I'll say it, that's the fastest I've ever seen him run ever. I stop in the back doorway as I watch Shawn run through the wood line, disappearing into the shadows of the woods. May hurries up to my side.
"Carla! I heard you saying Shawn's name. Is everything okay? Where is he?" May says. I turn to look at her. How is she going to feel about the fact that Shawn ran off.
"He's. Out there," I say, looking back out at the woods. I should probably try to find him.
"What happened?" May says.
"I don't know. I was about to get you when his body temperature kicked back up, but he suddenly started cowering down as if he was in major pain or something, and then he just, took off towards the woods, faster than I've ever seen anyone run," I explain.
"You said his body temperature spiked again?" May says.
"Yeah. I'm not kidding when I say this, but Shawn just went in for a drink, and when I walk in, he's sticking his hand under the running water. I saw it myself as the water hit his hand, but it didn't go to the drain. It was almost like his hand soaked up the water, or evaporated it, more likely," I say, partially to myself. I look up and see May has a look of disbelief. With or without her, I'm going to go see if I can't find Shawn.
"I'm going to go see if I can't find Shawn," I say, causing May to look at me. She sighs lightly before looking back out at the woods.
"He couldn't have gone far, could he?" May says.
"With how he was acting, the pain had to have given him fatigue quicker," I say.
"Well, let's go," May says. We start out towards the woods on a search.
[Shawn's POV]
I stop in a clearing in the middle of the woods as I collapse in the center of the opening. I want to scream in pain, but I oddly can't, despite the fact that it feels as if all my bones were crushed and my body was just tossed in a fire. I'm clutching my chest, but I move my hands to my temples instead.
Just as I think I'm going to get a little relief with the pain subsiding ever so slightly, another wave hits, harder than before, throwing me onto my side. I still can't scream, no matter how much I want to, as I feel a tearing feeling on my back, around my shoulder blades. Through all this pain, I feel myself starting to black out. Come on, just a little rest. I try to let myself slip into the pace of unconsciousness, but every time I'm about to, my body bursts in pain, preventing me from going out cold. I manage to let out a squeak of pain as I feel my shoulder blades almost tear open or something before having a constant pain. Once again, I feel myself blacking out again.
Coming to, I notice I'm lying on the grass, the pain over with. Did I actually black out? I go to stand up, but I fall forewords onto my hands, and notice something different, almost as if my hands are shorter. Same with my legs. I look down at my hands, but gasp as I don't see my hands, but dark, midnight blue clawed paws. I let out a raspy sounding gasp that sounded like a growl. Looking around, I notice my peripheral vision's improved, and actually widened a bit.
What the heck? I try to say, but notice that, instead of words, a growling sound comes out. Wait, growl? I may not talk much, but I sure as heck don't growl, no matter how much I wanted to try. Not like that anyway. I hear a rustling behind me and I jump around to look at what's behind me. I look and see a deer raise its head and run away. I watch as it leaps away before I realize something. I heard that deer, and it was a good amount of yards away for me to be able to hear it that crisp, or see it that well, for that matter. Hearing some heavier footsteps to my right, I turn and look, but it's a while before whatever I hear sounds close. I watch as Carla walks over the hill, looking around, not noticing me.
Carla? I say, but another growl coming out. Carla jumps and then looks at me before complete shock crosses her face. Carla's frozen in I'd guess complete shock at something. Looking around, I see nothing before it strikes me what she's staring at. Me. I slowly look up at her before she finally takes a step. Slowly making my way up to her, Carla has a look of disbelief, standing there as I walk up to her. I manage to walk about a meter away from her until she takes a step back. She takes a step back. She took a step back away from me, scared. What happened to me during that pain?
Carla, what's wrong? I say, or moreover now, growl. Her eyes widen in shock as I growl.
"Y-You can talk?" Carla gasps. Of course I can talk, I've always been able to.
Of course I can. We were just talking a minute ago. I say, still growling. Carla's shock is now a mix of continued shock and confusion. Carla sits down, giving me a chance to walk up beside her. To my surprise, it's actually easier to walk on my hands and knees, or, hands and feet, actually. She doesn't do anything as I lie down beside her.
"What do you mean we were talking a minute ago?" Carla says, looking at me. I look up at her and see she's looking down at me with interest and amazement.
Do you not recognize me? I say, this growl is getting a little tiring to listen to already. A little. Carla thinks for a second before utmost shock crosses her face.
"Sh-Shawn?" Carla says, terrified. I look up at her and nod. The shock that was on her face is now intensified, almost surreal. Well, then again, everything else today is seeming a little surreal. My temperature, pain, the fact that it's easier to walk on my hands and feet at the same time, and the subconscious fact that I can easily stay on my hands and feet with my back level.
Everything alright, Carla? I growl. Carla says nothing, but begins looking me over, a complete look of utter disbelief on her face. I'm beginning to feel a little weird as she looks me over. Carla? I question her, snapping her back to reality.
"Huh? What is it, Shawn?" Carla says. What I want to say is what is wrong with you, but a better question comes to mind.
What is with that look you're giving me? I growl, giving up on trying to truly talk.
"A-are you not aware of yourself?" Carla asks, her voice shaking. No? Aside from the personally obvious.
What's wrong with me? I growl, getting a little worried.
"W- well. You're a, uh," Carla says, cutting off short. A what? I'm a what? Come on, Carla! I hate it when you do this to me!
What? I'm a what? I growl, standing up. Carla looks a little hesitant before taking a breath.
"You're a Night Fury," Carla says, to my surprise. What? A Night Fury? Impossible!
Seriously, Carla. What's wrong? I growl. Carla pulls out her phone and unlocks it, which I surprisingly hear over all the noise that Mother Nature decided to make. Carla turns her phone towards me, her camera open, but instead of seeing my face, I see the face of a midnight blue Night Fury staring back at me from the screen. I move my face sideways, and the Night Fury moves accordingly. Taking my focus off the camera, I look down at my hands, which I'm surprised I haven't done before this, and instead of seeing my usual hands, I see midnight blue paws. Midnight blue Night Fury paws. I really am a Night Fury! This has to be a dream!
"Shawn?" Carla says, snapping me out of my thoughts. I turn to look at her, curiosity most likely shown on my face.
Yeah? I growl. Carla chuckles lightly at something.
"Your tail is wagging. A lot," Carla says. I turn to look, and see that my Night Fury tail is wagging a little, sometimes smacking Carla's leg. To my surprise, I will my tail to be still, and it obeys. Well, I got the hang of that rather quickly. Bringing my tail up to my face in between Carla and me, I decide to try something. Giving little thought to it, I manage to close and reopen my tailfins easily. Dropping my tail to the ground, I try to move my wings, only to see Carla move away a bit.
"Watch it with the wings!" Carla says. I can't help but give a dragon's laugh, earning a look from Carla that only Carla can pull off.
Sorry. New to the whole dragon thing, you know? I growl. Carla rolls her eyes and scoots next to me, resting her arm around my neck as I lie down.
"You know, it's still hard to believe that you're a dragon," Carla says. I lightly roll my eyes. As if I don't know that.
You think it's easy for me to believe either? I growl, shifting my wings and tail. I stand up a bit and reposition my feet and lie back down as I hear another pair of footsteps approaching. I turn in the direction of the footsteps I hear.
"What's up, Shawn?" Carla says, looking to where I'm looking.
I hear footsteps. I growl. Carla looks around, silent for a second.
"I don't hear anything," Carla says. I look in the direction of where I hear the footsteps and watch for a while until I see Mom's head appear over the hill!
Mom! I growl as she reaches the top of the hill. Mom looks towards Carla and I, a look of shock coming across her face.
"Carla?" Mom says, making Carla look. I swear, sometimes Carla can be just completely oblivious.
"Oh! May!" Carla says. Mom looks at me with a look of shock and disbelief.
"Isn't that a-" Mom starts, but trails off. Carla finishes Mom's thought for her.
"Night Fury? Yes. But that's not all. Come on, he won't bite," Carla says, motioning Mom over as she places her hand on my head. Mom, cautious, walks up to us.
"Wh-what do you mean?" Mom questions, keeping a wary eye on me. Oh boy. Won't this be fun. And I say fun with upmost sarcasm.
"Tell her," Carla says. What! Okay. I take a deep breath, prepared for anything. Here goes nothing.
It's me, Mom. I growl. Mom's shock becomes even more prominent at my growl, as if I just talked, which I probably did.
"Sh-Shawn?" Mom says, her voice aghast. I nod in response.
It's really me. I growl again. Mom looks down and grabs her head in disbelief. She looks back at me, as if trying to process it all. You okay, Mom? I growl, taking a step towards Mom. Mom simply kneels down.
"A Night Fury," She says. What? "You're a Night Fury. I can't believe it," Mom continues on. I walk up to Mom until I'm about a foot away.
I'm still your son, though. I haven't changed from my old self. I growl, resting my head on her lap. To my surprise, Mom starts petting me, which I'll admit. It feels nice. I unknowingly begin purring as Mom pets me.
"What are we going to do with you?" Mom says as I feel her look down at me.
I don't know. I growl. The three of us sigh at the same time, not knowing what to do. I lightly flap my wings, trying to get used to them, which gives me an idea. I perk my head up and look around before standing up.
"What's up, Shawn?" Carla says. I walk away from Mom and Carla a little ways, feeling the wind blow across my face.
I'll be back soon. I growl. I hear Carla jump up and walk towards me.
"Where are you going?" Carla says. I turn to face her, attempting a smile.
I'm going to go for a flight. I growl. It's now Mom's turn to jump up.
"Shawn! You can't! What if someone sees you?" Mom says.
I'll keep high so I look like a bird. And I'll avoid any aircraft nearby. I promise I'll be safe. Can't keep a Night Fury grounded, after all. I growl. Before Mom or Carla can say another word, I take off in a spring before leaping into the air, spreading my wings.
Finally got around to this! Hit a little wall in this with Disney's new "Zootopia" out in theaters, and now on this account. But I've gone and finished up Chapter Two! Sorry for the wait! Now, with two fandoms on my mind, it'll be a while before I get to writing Chapter Three for Life Of A Dragon: Remastered. But, as of now, I hope you enjoyed, and I'll see you readers in the next chapter. Peace for now!
