#################

Siya flicker her eyes lids as soft ray of sun penetrated her bedroom curtains. Annoyed by the light, she shoved a pillow on her face turned to face the other side. Her alarm clock had not beeped yet so she decided to cherish these last few minutes in bed.

Waking up early wasn't Siya's favourite everyday task, but today was not a normal day for her. It was the day she had been waiting for years and now it had finally arrived. That one special day that every teenage waits for. Yes, it was her 18th birthday!

Until last night she was very excited about today; Set the alarm for 6am, selected her outfit for the day and purposely left her curtains slightly open so the sunlight could help her wake up exactly an hour before her usual time. However, all the preparations were chucked out of the window when her relationship with her bed became more important to her than her own 18th birthday.

Siya had nearly fallen asleep when a soft knock on the door woke her up again. She chuckled in her bed and then sat up against the wooded frame.

"siya, are you up?" a sweet and innocent voice came from the other end of the door. It was her nine year old sister Seerat.

"Wait up!" Siya yelled and walked over her pink fur carpet to reach the door, "what is it?" she asked rubbing her eyes.

"Happy birthday, princess." Seerat offered Siya a rose and a chocolate with a huge innocent smile.

Siya gasped at the news. She finally remembered why she left the curtains open last night. She quickly planted a kiss on Seerat's cheek and asked her to wait downstairs while she got ready for the day.

Siya then ran towards her walk-in closet which led to her bathroom. Quickly grabbing her new red and black salwar kameez, which she had picked for today, she headed for a shower.

After spending good long thirty five minutes in front of the mirror, Siya decided to head downstairs. Like every year, she knew a surprise waited for her but before that she had to say her prayers in the pooja ghar. Her birthday was the only day when she took out some time from her routine to say her prayers in this house as thanks to her parents, this was not one of her favourite tasks.

Every time she headed in the pooja ghar, her parents argued about whom should she address first; Jesus or Ram. When she was little, her father, Sachin Raichand, was proud about Siya and her siblings having both, Hindu and Christian blood, but as she grew older her father started telling her to worship Hinduism more as it is greater than any religion in the world while her mother, Annalise Raichand, kept telling her all Gods are the same. She never dared to ask her dad why his opinions changed in such little time but always knew it was because of her eldest cousin Anjali.

Anjali ran away from her house four years ago when her parents found out about her relationship with her Irish colleague. Later she was found dead with a suicide note saying that she fell for the wrong guy, he was only after her parents' bank balance and by running away she had disgraced her family so she doesn't want to live anymore. Obviously that guy was sent to the prison, but Mr. Raichand was blamed for all this mishap as he was the one who started everything in first place. He was the one who went against his parents' decision and married an English woman.

Overtime, all those accusations made Mr. Raichand a very harsh yet worried man. He became more and more concerned about Siya and Seerat's upbringing than he ever was. No way was he going let Siya and Seerat walk on path he and then Anjali walked on. He was not going to let any of his daughters disgrace the family.

The change in personality was not really pleasant for the family as emotions drained out of Mr. Raichand in no time. What was left behind was an insecure man who cared about nothing but his 'so-called family reputation'. He became cold and distant. The marriage, he was once felt blessed with, also became a pain for him as Annalise was a Christian but divorcing her only added another stain to his reputaion so he had put the idea aside. As an alternative, he left no stone unturned when it came to planting more Indian values in his daughters by telling them their do's and don'ts. Wearing more traditional outfits was one of the 'value', short dresses were a big no-no, parties and guy friends were also out of question. He started teaching them to obey his rules and behave like good Indian daughters.

As Siya finished her prayers, she headed towards the living room where everyone waited for her. It was a large room and had red and golden ancient setting. The brown walls made the whole room too look shady and her grandfather's painting which hung right above the chimney was enough to scare the hell out of anybody. Siya always felt it was too tacky for a country like New Zealand where everything was too modern, but apparently according to her father, it brought back the memories of the mansion he grew up in.

The first thing she noticed was the huge balloon which was hanging right under the huge shimmery chandelier. She greeted her mother with a warm hug and walked over to her father to touch his feet and take his blessings. Sameer stepped forward and handed a lighter in Siya's hand and told her to pop the balloon. Siya gave him her 'really?' look before popping the balloon probably full of lollies and colourful little paper. How childish, she thought. This was something she did on Seerat's last birthday.

Everyone gasped as something shiny fell on the carpet of the living room. Before Siya could reach it, her father did. He didn't seem quite happy with that shiny thing he was holding in his hand. He gave Sameer a very angry look but Sameer chose to ignore it.

"Pass it to me, Dad," Sameer grabbed that thing from his father's hand and handed it to Siya. It was a key with a teddy bear keychain on it. "happy 18th from mom, me and Seerat." Sameer didn't bother saying his father's name because he knew his father would never give this kind of freedom to his 'daughters'. Sameer didn't like the difference between his sisters' and his upbringing. He always wished his father could understand that all three of his children deserved the same life.

Siya gasped in surprise when she read the small tag attached to the key ring, Lexus LFA. It was her dream to get a sports car the year she turned sixteen. She asked her father to buy her one for her birthday as Sameer got a luxury car on his sixteen too. Her father was not too happy with her wish and told her she doesn't need such an expensive car and they don't have that kind of money to spend on her. He asked her to fulfil all her expensive wishes after she got married.

If there was a meter to measure ones happiness, Siya must have broken everyone's record. She carelessly ran out of the living room and through the hallway, accidently bumping and breaking her father's $25,000 worth of statue, she pulled open the huge brown door which led her to the garden. She jogged around the beautiful white fountain placed in the middle of the garden and raced towards the driveway.

The car was not there; instead it waited for Siya outside the main gate. She was out of breath by now but nothing mattered more than the car of her dream. She took each step carefully now. It was hard to believe that this gorgeous red car was all hers. what if it was all a dream and she would wake up any moment?

She was only a meter away from her beautifully designed car when her heart began to ping with sadness. "Dad would never let me keep this," she sighed and looked at her brother who was standing next to her.

"I'll take care of it," Sameer assured her with a huge smile, "you are eighteen and you are keeping it. Took me damn long to save this much and now it's not going anywhere!"

Thanks, was all Siya could manage to say. She had no words to describe how blessed she felt for having a brother like Sameer. Tears of joy escaped from her eyes when she gave her brother a tight hug.
