Chapter 34: The Last
You know the deal!
I got into the back of the van with cuffs on my wrists. I felt like a criminal, after all that I did for the agency, I felt unwanted, undeserved, disgusting. I sold my life to the CIA and after everything, this was what I had. I knew that this was MIA, but they couldn't prevent this. CIA sealed my fate just like MIA did. After a few minutes of silence I spoke up to the men sitting with me. "Aren't you taking me to Langley?"
The guard looked up from his phone and sighed, as if I just ruined his moment. "No."
I nodded. Of course. MIA wanted me off the game board. With each passing moment, it set me more into a panic. They got me right where they wanted and there was no hope for me to get out.
After what felt like a life time, the van stopped and the back van doors opened but I didn't want to move. I felt like I was going to vomit.
"We're here," one guard said with a gruff voice. He took my cuffed hands and pulled me out of the van without waiting a second.
I stumbled out of the van and looked at the gray sky to match the gray MIA building. This was the last time I was going to see the sky for a while or even forever. I had a feeling that my grandmother wouldn't be able to get me out of here before they killed me. This was my goodbye.
"Move it," another guard said and pushed me forward.
I shot him a look but moved forward until I was walked into the MIA base. I looked around the hall with it's empty halls that were just as gray as the outside. Everything looked the same as it did last night, but now there was fear, it weighed down on me like a ton of bricks. I wondered if they figured out by now it was us that broke in last night.

Breaking me from my thoughts was a door that creaked open. Stepping out of the room was Fabien. He smiled at me widely, as if this was such a pleasant surprise to see me. "Annalise, my dear. Welcome to MIA," he said happily.
I was right where he wanted me to be. This had to be his plan for a while now, because he was ecstatic.
"I can take it from here men. And here, someone get those cuffs off her," Fabien said as he snapped his fingers, looking at the men that got me from my house.
One come up in front of me and uncuffed me without a word. I raised an eye brow in confusion. I was forced here against my will but they're uncuffing me? What was Fabien's play? I looked back behind me to see the three guards walk off. Fear started to kick in even more as I realized that I was alone, with him.
Fabien put his hand on my shoulder with a smile. "Annalise, why do you have that face on? Come on, smile. For me? This is an exciting moment. We are finally going to talk face to face. You don't know how long I have been waiting for this."
I just stared at him. I didn't want to be compliant. But I also didn't want to get on his bad side so I forced a small smirk. I was here in his building. He made the calls and if I wanted to live I would have to do everything he said even if it was going to dam me to hell.
"There we go," he asked as he started to lead me down a hall.
I didn't say anything as I followed him. The deeper we got into the building the more terrified I got. Fabien was a wild card and I was in his building. What was he going to do to me?
"Oh it's not going to be that bad. Come on," he said and flashed a smile reassuringly and gently pushed me on the small of my back until we were at the elevator. We got off on the 7th floor and he said, "left please."
I knew where we were going. This was the same floor that Toby put me in when he caught me. We passed the broken glass door and Fabien frowned. "I didn't think you would have enough strength to break through this."
My blood ran cold, he knew. My team, we all had targets on our backs. MIA was going to be after them too. I just hoped they were smart enough to not get caught.
"But you always seem to amaze me. I don't understand why you have such low self esteem, what Toby told me, your a power house in so many ways. I just wished you joined our team then we would have been talking differently."
I shuttered to think that Toby told him everything. Every private moment, Fabien knew. Fabien probably knew me as well as Toby did. All my secrets, my thoughts, Fabien knew them too. I wouldn't be able to fool him as well as I thought. He would see through me because he knew me.
He stopped in front of another glass door and unlocked it. I wanted to run but something told me if I did, he would kill me so instead, I just stayed in place as the door opened. I was sealing my fate. Once I walked in the room, it was over, completely.
Fabien walked in and gestured me to follow. Knowing it was all over, I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. With that, I held my head held high and walked in with him. I had no choice but to. I was in too deep to run away.
Fabien closed the glass door behind us and just like that my future was over and my fate was sealed. I felt my eyes well up with tears in fear. My life was over. My hope was gone. I was as good as dead.
"Aw Annalise, come on, this isn't as bad as you think. We are just going to talk."
I nodded as I looked around the room we were in as if it would make me feel better. It was bigger than the one Toby put me in. It had a bed and two chairs with another small room in the corner, I was guess the bathroom. This room just confirmed the fact that I would be here for a while. They wanted to extract as much information from me as possible.
"Here take a seat," he said a gestured me to sit in the gray metal chair.
I sat down in the cold chair and it sent shivers down my spine.
He smiled as he looked at me. He could see the fear in my eyes. He liked it. He had everything he wanted like it was Christmas day.
My heart was pounding in my chest so loud that I thought it was audible to him. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. I was going to be sick. I had to pull myself together.
"How are you doing?" he asked, smiled and sat in the chair next to mine.
I wanted to say to him 'Cut the crap I know that's not why you wanted me here' but I was afraid of what he would do if I did. I decided that it would be safer if I just didn't say anything at all.
His smile faded and he said in a harsher tone, "you answer me when I talk to you." He got up from his chair and slapped me across the face.
I felt the sting of the slap long after he was back in his chair. I sat dazed for a minute. I had to do everything he wanted. He was going to torture me if I didn't. "I've been better," I mumbled as I lightly touched my hot check.
He flashed a bright smile as if everything was ok. He wanted to make me suffer. This was a game to him. He wanted me to step out of line so I could be punished. "So I have to ask, how you got in here last night."
I frowned. Zach told me that there was a chance that the cameras would still record. I wondered if I could make them believe I was the only one that came in. "I turned off the cameras." I wasn't going to bring any one else into this mess. I was going to do my best to keep the blame all on me. I dragged them all into it so this was my fault in the end.
"The outside camera has a backup power and it worked only half of the time. I saw the back of your blonde hair on the camera myself. So how did you get in?"
Relief washed over me. He didn't see the rest of the group, just me. This was going to be easier to cover up. I didn't say anything. Maybe if I was lucky he would stop soon.
"You don't have to be this way," he said and sighed. He rolled up his sleeves to his blue button-down shirt and I closed my eyes as I braced myself for his wrath.
I was waiting for the sting of the slap but this time it was a punch to the face. I slowly lifted my hand to my nose then brought it down to see blood on my fingers. My nose burnt but as I wrinkled it I realized that it wasn't broken. "The control panel. It wasn't hard to break through," I lied quickly. I had been tortured before but I always knew that the CIA had my back.
"I guess we need to fix that, don't we? Now what is another question? Hummm. Think Fabien, ok I got it. How did you first find out about MIA?"
He couldn't know about my father. I had to keep that secret to my grave. "I stumbled upon an old file about them and I decided to look into it."
He shook his head as he stood up from his chair. He paced the room then stopped to look at me. He knew I was lying. "But Annalise, we both know that's not how it happened," he said and punched me again but this time in the stomach.
I let out a sharp breath and held my stomach as I dropped to the ground. I dry heaved. I rested my cheek against the cool cement as I pulled myself together. I looked at him with hate and spit some blood as I stood up again and sat back on the chair.
"You are James's daughter aren't you? Tough, always protecting your friends. It's better you then them, right?" he asked as if he knew everything about me.
I could see it in his eyes, he had an idea who helped me. He knew I didn't do this on my own. But I rather die then give up my friends. I didn't say anything but he smiled. He was loving this.
"This is going to be fun. Tell me the truth and this will end faster." He placed his elbows on his knees and looked at me, as if reading my mind.
I didn't know if 'end' met that he would leave or if it meant that he would kill me quickly. I had a feeling it was the latter. I needed to draw this out longer, that would give my team a better chance of getting me out of here.
He sighed as he paced around the room again. He ran his hand through his black hair. He looked out the glass door as he thought. "Oh Annalise. I'm going to tell you a secret, now promise me that this will be kept between you and me."
I looked up at him with curiosity. I wanted to know but at the same time I didn't want him to tell me. He was going to share all of his secrets because I wasn't going to live long enough to tell them to anyone.
He turned to face me as mischief played in his eyes. "You got General Smith and your grandmother is closing in on the other head of MIA." He walked over to me and grabbed me by my hair with force. I squirm under his grip. I could see anger as he looked at me. He never thought I would be so much trouble. He dropped me to the ground then brushed his hands against his pants. "What you don't realize is the last person on your list is right under your nose."
It was him, he was the last head. Fabian, the taxi driver was the other leader. "You're the last leader."
He nodded with a smirk. "Correct."
I frowned. He and I both knew that I was so close to ending this, but yet so far.
He walked over to his chair again and looked at me. "Now, I find it impossible that you found out about General smith and Will on your own. Tell me who helped you," Fabien said breaking the silence.
I wiggled in my chair, getting antsy. There was no freedom from here. He was going to question me until I died. He wasn't going to let me go and if that was the case, I might as well go down swinging and I was going to bring him with me. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly feeling calm wash over me. "Go to hell," I said through my teeth, looking right into his cold blue eyes.
He sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. He was hoping this would be easier. "You really want to go there?" he asked as he tried to punch me but I dodged it.
Like instinct, I put my hands up into a fist, ready to attack. "I already did," I said and took a swing at him but he dogged it.
"That was not cool," he said fiercely and tried to punch me again but I dogged it again. I took another swing to his head. My fist hit his skull hard enough that I could hear the impacted of bone to bone. He fell to the ground but caught himself before his head hit the ground. "Is that all you got?" He pulled himself up from the ground with help from a metal chair.
I smiled. I was just getting started. He didn't know what I had for him. "No." But as soon as I said that, he picked up that chair and swung it was me. The legs of the chair hit my side with enough force that it knocked me off my feet. I let out a cry and dropped to the ground in pain. My right side was throbbing.
I looked up at Fabien with fear in my eyes. I saw the anger and hate in his face. He wanted to kill me right here and now. This was it; I was dead. "Try that again and I will end you," he yelled then walked out of the room.
I stayed on the cold cement floor, waiting for him to come back with a gun but after what felt like an hour, he did not return. Finally, the pain became more bearable and I was able to scrape myself off the floor and climbed into the bed.
I looked at the ceiling and frowned, as emotions hit me. I just dug a larger grave for myself. I had no chance against him. I wiped a tear from my cheek then closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
