Epilogue

The seasons changed and gave way to new life and death almost in a continual fashion. So many of the does with fawns had passed away and left their fawns to either continue in their herd, or find a new ones as does and bucks who could look after themselves.

Time even came for when Nevaeh had to say goodbye to her mother. It was one of the most painful things that she had to do, apart from loosing her father. Dove started to slowly fade away due to old age and officially passed over her duties to her daughter and Barrow. It was with a heavy heart that the two obeyed just as Dove took her final breath and her head lolled back against the ground and she no loner took in a breath.

It was only a moon or so after that that Nevaeh found herself wandering around, searching for her mate. She padded through the undergrowth and glanced around before someone seemed to fall from above. Her head tilted upward and she let out a breath of relief as she noticed the familiar face of an owl above her.

"Friend Owl, you gave me quite a fright," Nevaeh exclaimed.

Friend Owl lifted a wing and bowed ever so slightly. "So terribly sorry, Nevaeh. I didn't mean to startle you. Did you need something," he inquired.

She nodded vigorously as she continued to look around. "Have you seen Barrow? I really need to talk to him," Nevaeh explained.

Friend Owl spread his wings and started to pump them in the air as he lifted himself from the tree. "I believe he was at the edge of the meadow last time I saw him, but I will find him and bring him to you! You stay right here," ordered Friend Owl as he lifted into the air and started to fly.

Nevaeh slightly chuckled when she watched him before sighing heavily and starting to lower down. She felt a sharp pain in her abdomen and she gasped a bit. She sprawled out as much as she could with her head rested against the trunk of a tree. Her eyes slightly closed as she relaxed.

Her eyes only opened when she heard hoofbeats coming toward her coupled with the almost silent sound of flight. Her head lifted as she rose to her hooves as Barrow approached. "Barrow," Nevaeh exclaimed as she saw her mate approach.

"Nevaeh, is everything okay," Barrow fretted in alarm.

Nevaeh nodded slowly. "Oh yes. I just have something that I want to tell you," she explained as she flicked her head to Friend Owl.

Friend Owl jolted a bit with his wings thrust over his chest. "Oh yes, of course. I'll just be going now," he announced as he lifted his wings and soared away from them.

Barrow tilted his head quizzically as he looked to his mate. "So what is so important that we have to be alone for this," he inquired.

Nevaeh flicked her head a bit as she started forward, making sure that her legs were able to support her. "Come with me and I'll tell you," she answered as she made her way forward slowly.

Barrow stayed close to her and they walked through the forest. The frost was beginning to show on the ground and it marked an early winter. They hadn't made it far when Nevaeh couldn't stop her excitement. She swung her head around and it brushed against his ear. "I'm expecting a fawn."

Her mate immediately froze with his front legs sprawled in front of him. A smile showed on his face as he blinked his eyes rapidly. "Really? You are?!"

A rumble of amusement rolled in Nevaeh's throat. "Yes, I am," she answered with a thoughtful look at her underbelly. "It will be born in spring like the others."

"Do you have any idea what it will be," he asked hopefully as one of his hooves thrust against the ground.

Nevaeh shrugged. "I'm afraid that I don't, but if I had to guess I would think a little stag, as handsome as his father," she answered as she rubbed her head against his muscular shoulder.

    "And any names?"

    "I'm open to suggestions."

Barrow chuckled as he glanced toward the sky. "Then I suppose I'll have to wait to see him until a name comes to mind, I suppose."

Nevaeh nodded in agreement. "It will be a last minute decision. I know that the proper name will be revealed in time. We just have to wait and see." She sighed as she tilted her head and rested it against Barrow's shoulder. "I can't wait for him to get to see you."

He bowed his head and his neck seemed to cover his mate. "And I can't wait for him to meet you. He will have the best mother in the entire forest, I know."

"And he will have the best father in the world," Nevaeh replied as she touched her nose to his. "And he will know it."

He shook his head gravely. "I'm not sure about that."

"I hope that one day it will be proven to you about how incredible a father you can truly be."
