Chapter 3: Meeting
"Nevaeh. Nevaeh, wake up."
Nevaeh felt a gentle prodding in her side and she turned slightly and realized that it was her mother. She fell onto her side and lifted one of her legs to push her hoof against Dove's cheek. "Mama, I'm still tired," he complained.
Dove chuckled as she licked her daughter's cheek affections. "I know, but I have a surprise for you that I'm sure that you're going to like," she explained as she gave her daughter one more firm nudge before she rose to her hooves and started out of the burrow.
Nevaeh noticed her mother leave and she followed in suit. She gave her fur a few shakes to wake herself up before she came into the slightly cooler weather then from being cozy and curled up with her mother. Dove turned her head to make sure that Nevaeh was following before she continued to step forward slowly.
"Where are we going" asked Nevaeh asked slowly.
Dove continued forward, slightly smiling. "You'll see. I promise that you're going to like it," she answered as she picked up the pace and it took Nevaeh a little more effort to bound forward to keep up.
They continued through the forest slowly before they came to the edge of a meadow where Nevaeh saw two deer frolicking there. Nevaeh drew back behind her mother's hind legs and shook in fear. Dove lowered her neck and swung her head around to look at her daughter. "It's alright. You don't have to be scared," Dove chided warmly as she took a few steps forward. Dove continued forward and made sure that Nevaeh was right behind.
The two continued to walk forward as another doe walked toward her with her young fawn following. The two does dipped heads to each other and Nevaeh found herself tucking back behind her mother subconsciously. "Dove, it's so good to see you," the doe exclaimed as she touched her nose to Nevaeh's.
"It's good to see you too, Feather!" Dove then looked around to the fawn beside Feather, not nearly as shy as Nevaeh. "And is this Mena?"
Feather dipped her head and looked at her daughter. "It is." She turned her own head to try and catch a glimpse of Nevaeh, but Nevaeh pressed closer against her mother and shook in shock. "And you must be Nevaeh."
"Uh huh," Nevaeh croaked.
Dove lifted her hind leg and reached her head around to nudge Nevaeh forward. "Come on, little one. Don't be rude. I'm sure that Mena would like to meet you."
"Yeah," exclaimed Mena as she stepped forward and walked up to Nevaeh. Her head stretched out and Nevaeh drew back. "Hi! I'm Mena."
Dove gave her daughter one more look and Nevaeh and leaned forward a bit. "I'm Nevaeh."
Mena's eyes glowed as she lowered down into a playful crouch before springing up. Nevaeh's eyes glowed in amusement as she started to jump around after Mena and the two of them raced around a stone in the meadow where their mothers could still see them.
Nevaeh reared on her hind legs and faced Mena, giggling before springing off the boulder. Mena squealed as she leaped after her. "Is this your first time in the meadow," questioned Mena, slightly panting from the running around that they had did.
Nevaeh nodded. "Yeah, how about you?"
"I've been out here with mother before, but we're not really supposed to be out here unless the Great Prince of the Forest is out here," explained Mena.
Confusion showed in Nevaeh's gaze as she tried to imagine what he might look like. "Who's the Great Prince of the Forest?"
"My mama says that he's one of the bravest and wisest deer here and so strong. At least that's what my Mama said," explained Mena before the sound started to almost pound and vibrate.
Nevaeh looked up in fear and wanted to cry for her mother, but she was just too shocked to move. She kept her legs locked by Mena while numerous other deer started to run around, finding their own places in the meadow. They were all doe with some fawns at their sides.
She stood firm before Mena came up to her and nudged her head against her friend's shoulder. "Come on. We really shouldn't be right here. We should be with our mothers," pointed out Mena as she thrust her hoof against the ground pointedly.
For some reason, Nevaeh couldn't stop herself from moving. Instead, she stood firm as a stag started toward them slowly. Her eyes started to almost roll up in her head as the large buck came forward and Nevaeh lifted her head more to him.
He stopped to look at her before. Dove bounded over to her daughter and stood beside her. "Splinter," began Dove with a dip of her head.
"Dove," Splinter replied back as he stretched out his head and touched it gingerly to Dove's forehead. Nevaeh looked up in surprise before Dove turned back to daughter.
"It's alright, little one. Do you remember your father, Splinter," Dove asked gently.
Nevaeh shook her head slowly as Splinter slightly slumped forward and smiled to her kindly. "Hello, Nevaeh. I remember you," he told her warmly. "You were a little smaller and a lot less coordinated."
The little fawn giggled before she noticed her father look up quickly. He snorted a bit before he pushed his head against Dove's shoulder firmly. "Let's go," he commanded as he allowed his muscles to ripple as he thrust his hooves against the ground in an effort to order everyone back into the forest line.
"Come, Nevaeh," ordered Dove as she flicked her head.
Nevaeh bounded forward beside her mother. They headed for the tree line and Dove made sure that Nevaeh was in front of her. Mena had bounded back around to Feather. Splinter kept his eyes on the rest of the does as well as his mate and daughter.
"Mama, what's happening," Nevaeh asked as she tipped her head toward her mother fearfully.
Understanding showed on Dove's face as Splinter threw his head to the side, urging them back into the woods. "I'll tell you in a little bit. For now, let's go home," Dove answered as she flicked her hoof against Nevaeh's shoulder and nudged her forward.
Reluctantly, Nevaeh followed with a hollow understanding of what had just happened.
