Tragedy

Sydney POV

I love going shopping with my mom. I just hate that we don't have a car. We're going to the store to get my brother's birthday cake. He's turning fourteen tomorrow. I can't wait until I'm a teenager. They get to do to a lot of cool stuff.

My brother's get to spend the night over their friends house. They're so lucky. My mom said that I can't because I'm too young. Even though she let's me stay home by myself sometimes. I know my time will come eventually. I can't wait.

We finally got to the store after walking from the bus stop. I swear that walk feels like a two mile marathon. I'm over here panting and sweating hard.

My mom looks at me and smiles "I know you're not tired. You're too young to be tired from that little walk." She chuckled a bit

I looked up at her "You didn't even stop though. You were walking so fast." I said talking in between breaths

"Chile I don't wanna be out here all. It's way too hot to be taking breaks. Plus I wanna get back home so I can start on dinner." She said as she got a shopping bin

"Yea I guess you're right." I said still trying to catch my breath

"I know I'm right."

We went over to the bakery and got the cake my brother wanted. The bakers wrote his name on it and happy birthday in big letters. We took the cake and got a few other things then went to checkout. The person in front of us was looking sad like they couldn't pay for their stuff.

The cashier shook her had "I'm sorry but this card is declined too."

The guy looked down "That's all I have ma'am. What am I supposed to feed my family? We have no food?" He started to cry

My mother sighed. She looked at me and I looked at her. She walked up to the guy and put her hand on his shoulder. He looked at her.

"I'll pay for his things."

Mother said as she dug through her purse getting out the little money we had left. I looked away wondering how we were gonna pay for the things we had. She gave the money to the cashier and the man thanked her.

He turned around wiped his tears and smiled "Oh thank you thank you ma'am. I am very grateful for this."

He hugged my mother got his things then left. The cashier smiled and praised my mother for what she did.

"That was such a kind thing you did there. You don't really see much of that these days."

"It was the least I could. I saw how hurt he was and I wanted to help."

"You know what just for that all of your things are free. I'll have them take it out of my paycheck." The cashier said as she put rung up our things

"Oh no you don't have to do that. Keep your money sweetie." My mother said smiling and digging through her purse to try and find some money that wasn't there

"Oh please I insist. It would be my pleasure. Please let me." The cashier begged

My mother smiled at her and held her hand "Thank you so much. I will never forget this."

"You're so very welcome." She said as she handed us our things

My mother waved "God bless you child."

The cashier waved back "You too ma'am."

We walked out and started for the bus stop. I looked at my mother who was smiled from ear to ear.

"Mom how come you paid for that man's stuff when you knew you wouldn't have enough money left for our stuff?" I questioned

She stopped and looked at me "Because God had it all taken care of."

I tilted my head in confusion "How did you know that God had it taken care of?"

She smiled at me "Because he always looks out for his children. You remember when your Grandmother got sick and the doctors said she wouldn't make it?"

"Yea I remember that."

"Remember we prayed and the next day the doctor said everything would be fine and that she could go home. That's God taking care of his children."

"Oh."

She knelt down to my level and stared me in my eyes "Baby you gotta trust God even when things are at there worst. He'll always be there and he'll always hear you. Don't ever forget that ok?"

I nodded and she smiled "That's my little chocolate muffin."

I chuckled "Why do you call me that?"

"Because when you were a baby you were chocolate and fat and fluffy like a muffin." She chuckled

"Oh." I said laughing a bit

We kept talking a bit until we made it to the bus stop. Finally we made it. Now all we have left is the bus ride home. My mom and I kept talking until we were interrupted by a man wearing a mask.

"Give me all your money right now." He semi yelled so no one would hear him

"We don't have any money sir."

He sighed and walked closer to us "Then how are you gonna ride the bus huh? Someone's lying."

He kept coming closer and we kept backing up. Before we knew it we were in an alley. He took out a gun and pointed it at us.

"I'm only gonna tell you one more time. Give me the money!"

I started to cry and my mother put her arm around me "Look I told you we don't have any. Please just let us g-."

My ears started to ring and I felt my mother's grip on my lighten. I looked over at her and she was falling to the ground. I knelt down and held her head up with my hand. I looked down at her stomach and she was bleeding. I started to bawl in her chest. She put her hand on my hand.

"Listen child I need you to listen to me." She said weakly

I looked up at her still crying "I need you to tell everyone that I love them. Don't ever let go. Press on and don't let get to them. I love you sweetie and remember what I told you." She said as she stopped breathing

I screamed "NOOOOOOO. MOMMY PLEASE WAKE UP PLEASE. DON'T LEAVE ME I NEED YOU."

I shook her but she didn't wake up. She was dead. All of a sudden this fierce anger came over me. I turned to see that the guy who shot my mother was still there. He was frozen in shock. He dropped his gun and put his face in his hands.

"III'm ssso ssorry III dddidn't mmean to. III swear." He stuttered

I got up and walked over to him. I looked down at his gun and picked it up. I demanded that he take off his mask and show me his face. He refused at first but I pointed the gun at he and he did as I said.

He took off the mask revealing that he was the man that my mother had help at the store. I couldn't believe it. That made me even angrier.

"I can't believe you. She helped you and you do this. I knew something was up with you. I bet all that shit you said was made up wasn't it?" I yelled

He didn't answer "I said wasn't it?" I cocked the gun

"Yes it wa-."

My finger slipped and pulled the trigger. My eyes grew back as I looked on in horror. I had shot him in the head. I dropped the gun and just stood there. Eventually some cops came and put me in a squad car. They asking me questions but I couldn't talk. I felt so numb.

I laid down and tried to dream about something happy. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Everytime I closed my eyes it all played in my mind. I wish it would just stop.
