Chapter 26

Kong's POV

I was awakened by my father shaking me.

"Wake up," he whispered in my ear. "Bas is in the living room. He wants to talk to you."

"What???" I asked in surprise. I looked at the time in my cell phone. It was only six in the morning. He must have left his cottage at five thirty or earlier because the walk from there to here usually takes a half hour.

What must be so urgent that he wanted to see me at this hour?

I got out of bed, running my fingers through my hair.

He stopped talking to my father when he saw me enter the living room.

"Kong," my father said to me, "is it alright for Bas to share your room for a few days?"

"What???" I could hardly believe my ears.

"I'm sorry to be a big bother to you," said Bas, looking apologetically at me. "If it will be too much of a bother, I can always go back to the cottage."

I was very tempted to ask why he was asking for this very strange favor but if he wasn't going to offer an explanation I believed it was because it was a sensitive matter for him.

"I have no problem sharing my bed," I said. "You will just have to forgive me if you feel cramped in it."

"I don't think so," said Bas, standing up from his chair and starting to pull his suitcase toward my room.

"Make yourself comfortable on my bed," I said to him, "I will just go to the kitchen to help my mother prepare breakfast for all of us."

"Oh, let me go with you to help," said Bas standing up from the bed.

"No, no, no," I said, " you're a guest. We will not feel comfortable with you working around the house. Just, please stay in my room and make yourself comfortable."

I went to the kitchen and saw that my mother had already started making several sunny side ups.

"Wait," I said to my mom, "let me ask Bas how he prefers his eggs. He might not want it sunny side up. He might want an over easy."

I went back to my room to ask Bas.

"I usually have scrambled eggs on my toast, if it's not too much of a bother for you," he said.

"Of course not," I said. "I'll call you when it's ready."

"Thank you so much," he said, "I really appreciate your kindness."

Godt's POV

I was awakened by the need to go to the bathroom. I happened to glance at the wall clock. Yeah, the clock was right. It was only five o'clock in the morning. The sun was barely peeking from the horizon.

When I came back from the bathroom I was intending to go back to sleep when I realized that Bas was not in his spot on the bed. Where could he have gone. I just came from the bathroom so I knew that he wasn't there.

I went to the kitchen. The kitchen was empty.

I noticed that the front door was closed but was not locked. I opened it and walked into the porch. He wasn't there either.

I went down and started walking towards the narrow pathway, squinting my eyes in case I saw him walking in the far distance. There was no one and nothing that I could make out on the narrow trail in the distance.

Should I start getting worried? Should I wake up everyone and let them know that Bas was missing? Should I walk over to Kong's house to see if he went there? Do I want to know?

Yes, of course I want to know! I want to know if Bas has decided to go after his heart's desire and had left me in the dirt!
