Five
FLASHBACK:
"Abrielle! I am going to the grocery store! I will be home in a half hour. Charles is here to stay with you." my mother says. I sit on the floor, playing with my dolls. Charles walks over to me with a wide smile. "She'll be fine." He calls back to mother. "Thank you Charles." she says, as she slams the door shut.
"What ya playin' Abrielle?" he asks. I look up at him and shrug.
I wasn't exactly playing anything. I was more thinking than playing pretend. "Who was that man?" I ask, suddenly. He furrows his eyebrows. "What man?" he asks. "At that scary place." I reply. He looks at me confused."Charles, I was falling asleep and a man came to you." I say. He shrugs. "Why are you worried about a man?" he asks. I shrug and decide to drop the entire conversation."Me and mommy used to go get groceries together all the time. Why can't I go now?" I ask. He inhales."Mommy doesn't want you to get in any danger. She doesn't want anything happening to you." he says. I sigh. "Mommy can keep me safe." I tell him. " I know, dear. She's just going through alot right now." He says, now sitting beside me on the floor. "but remember Abrielle, what I told you?" he says. I nod. "Be pos- " i stop mid-word. I couldn't pronounce it "Positive, Abrielle." he says. I nod and smile. "Positive." I mimic. Always be positive

It had been hours of sitting in the emergency waiting room with my mother and Nikki's mother. Charles had came a little after Nikki's mother and he sat next to me. He squeezed me shoulder gently.
I could see he thought I had something to do with this and he surely thought that I was going to be sent away in the morning.
I watch the door of the waiting room open and three police walk over towards us. "Hello. We are here to talk to...Miss Abrielle?" One of the three says.
My mother's face grows pale and Nikki's mother bites her lip. Charles remains calm. I stand to my feet. My hands began to feel clammy and my heart raced. "I'm Abrielle. Nice to meet you." I say.
I tried to remain calm but I could feel my face beginning to feel hot. They could clearly see my nervousness. "You aren't in any trouble. We just need to ask you some questions. Is that okay?" The police officer on the left asks. I knew I had no choice. They simply ask to make it sound more casual. "Sure." I say.
"Alright. Follow us." The police officer on the left says. I follow him down the hall and peer behind me at my worried mother's expression.
They take me in a small room with a table and chairs. I sit in front of the three."So I think you probably know what this is all about." The police officer says.
He had brown hair and brown eyes. "My name is Saxon by the way. I'll be asking the questions. Harold and Erick are just here to keep note of things." He informs me. I nod in understanding.
"So would you mind explaining to me what happened today with Nikki?" he asks. I nod. I clear my throat. I keep my hands in my lap so they wouldn't be able to see me fidget.
"Well, She had slept over and we decided to go take a hike because we were bored. And uh, she brought her camera so she could take pictures of the waterfall and for some collage she's making for her senior year." I pause. I was collecting my thoughts. I told them how she fell and what we were doing. "And so I quickly carried her back to my house. She was bleeding heavily. My mother gave me a towel for her to lay on while we waited for the ambulance to come." I finish.
I tried to be as detailed and accurate as possible. Harold scribbles quickly on a sheet of yellow piece of paper. Saxon looks around the room. I could tell her was thinking of questions. "We did find the camera in the water. We had some investigators go look everywhere." He says. I nod.
"Abrielle. it states here on your record that you have a very serious mental illness. Is this true?" He asks.
My face goes hot and I wanted to just disappear. "I had just learned about it this week. I don't know if it's a mental illness or what." I say.
He nods. "Well you have had many childhood examinations and it states here in your record that you most definitely have a serious mental illness that limits your freedom." He explains.
I look down at my fingernails. "What does this have to do with Nikki?" I ask, after a moment.
"Do you think maybe you had an episode on the hike and- " I don't let him finish.
"You think I did this?" I snap. He opens his mouth and then closes it. "I can't believe this! I didn't do anything to Nikki. She slipped and fell on a damn rock and hit her head! I would never ever hurt my best friend!" I yell.
I stand to my feet. "You all are unbelievable." I say.
"Please calm down and sit back down Miss Abrielle." the police officer named Erick says. I sit down and breathe out a sigh. "I didn't do this." I say.
I felt tired. I wanted to go home and wrap myself in my blanket and take a long nap.
"Abrielle, we didn't say you did anything. We are just trying to figure out all what happened." Saxon says. I refuse to look at the three officers.
"If it was anyone else you wouldn't have questioned them." I reply.
"We have no choice but to investigate you. You are very well known in our police unit and you have serious mental illness." Harold says, a little too harshly.
I could feel tears threatening to fall. "I would never hurt Nikki." I say, a single tear falls down my cheek. "You can ask her!" I shout. "When she wakes up, watch she'll tell you!" tears fall down my face.
"Please calm down. We will definitely ask Nikki when she wakes." They say.
I continue to cry. The only thing going through my mind is four words: if she wakes up.
