Chapter 38 Meet Me at the Altar

Brook and the others had been speeding away from the hangar as fast as they could. He quickly dialed Jett on his radio to get the girls' coordinates—he had to find them fast, time was running out! How he hoped he wasn't too late.

"Brook, you made it!" Jett exclaimed on the radio. "Is the chief—"

"Jett, Jett, Jett! Track Paige right now and don't waste a single second!" Brook cut him off like a streak of lightning.

"I already tracked her. Packaging warehouse, forty-ninth street. You should be there in twenty—"

"Twenty?! God, I hope that's enough time," Brook clamored, his heart pounding painfully in anxiety.

"Time for what?" Jett asked.

"The girls are locked up with a bomb and last we checked, we have—less than half an hour to rescue them," Reece replied, checking his car clock. Jett gave a gasp which nobody minded.

"We can't afford any delays, Brook. Roads in the city will be jammed with traffic. We better tear it down there off-road!" Payton said urgently.

"Right! Jett, can you call the cops and let them know there's another hostage situation at the girls' location?" Brook asked rapidly.

"Way ahead of you. But I'm not sure if they'll get there in time," Jett said nervously. Brook slammed his wheel, biting his lip.

"We'll get there, Brook," Payton said, hearing him. Brook swallowed, trying not to let the looming despair overpower him.

"I just hope so... I can't handle the consequences if we can't..." he pulled Michelle's rosary out of his breast pocket and wrapped it tightly around his fingers as he drove, whispering a fervid prayer to it.

"Please help me save her..."

Outside the warehouse...

Officers Cal and Joe were standing twenty meters away from the warehouse next to their cruiser, regarding the building with doubt.

"Well... no cars, no gang fights, no thugs... not even a stray cat," Joe said in disbelief. "Pretty sure that was a prank call."

"Hold your horses, Joe, you always tend to jump the gun," Cal replied sedately. "Let's scout the place first. Then we'll decide—" his two-way radio came on and the sheriff's voice spoke.

"Officer Blunt, I got your report. What's your position?"

"We're at the location, chief. Doesn't seem like the lights are on."

"I have it from a reliable source that there are hostages inside with a timebomb. We'll be there soon but see if there's any way you can break in."

"B-b-b-b-bomb?" Joe stammered, staggering back against the car. "We gotta get outta here!"

"Joe Nantucket, you try to run and I'll confiscate your badge myself!" Cal said sternly, grabbing his partner's collar and dragging him to the warehouse. "Now come on! We gotta make sure the hostages are okay!"

Inside the warehouse...

"Jada, that may cut through bone but I doubt it'll cut through steel," Michelle stated, as she watched Jada grunting and struggling to cut through the locked door of the warehouse with her knife.

"She's right, anybody got a nail file on them?" Paige asked. Trish scowled in disdain.

"What do I look like, a walking manicurist?"

"I was gonna say 'freakshow' but why waste my breath?" Paige muttered. "How long do we have?"

"Thirteen minutes," Leslie replied, eyeing the bomb timer warily. Paige groaned.

"If only we could've gotten through to Jett!"

"I doubt he heard half of what I said, I can't get a single bar here," Michelle said nervously, holding up her phone. "And calls aren't going through since then..."

"Hello? Hello? Any hostages in there?" A man's slightly muffled voice outside the door startled the girls. "This is the police!"

"We're in here!" Michelle and Paige hollered. "The door's locked and there's a bomb!"

"We know, we got the message!" The officer called out. "Stay back, we're gonna try and break the door down!" there was a sound of a metal 'clanging' outside like the cop was banging the door with a crowbar. He suddenly let out a yell and there was a 'snap' and a grunt.

"Doggone it, that didn't work. Isn't there anything else we can use, Joe?" The officer asked.

"Don't you clods have guns?" Trish shouted incredulously.

"Trish, you want to try not insulting the people rescuing us?" Leslie asked with an eye roll. Trish growled under her breath.

"Alright, we're gonna try shootin' the door handle, stand back!" The officer called out. There was a loud 'bang' as the gun went off but still, the door didn't budge. The other officer groaned.

"Like trying to crack a safe! Nothing's working, Cal!"

"Joe, you wanna shut up and not scare the hostages?!" The officer called Cal scolded.

"Don't worry, we don't scare easily," Paige said airily, though her eyes flickered to the bomb. Michelle bit her lip tensely.

"There has to be another way to get out of here!" She cried. Before anyone could say another word, the sounds of cars rumbling in the distance reached everyone's ears.

"Wait, that's—that's Brook's Bugatti!" Michelle said with shining eyes. "The police must've rescued the boys!"

"Well, I hope they hurry because we've only got seven minutes left!" Trish yelled in fear. The sounds of the cars came right up to the warehouse and soon Brook's voice came through the door.

"Michelle! Paige! Leslie! Please tell me you're alright!" Brook cried out, banging the door with his fists.

"Brook! We're okay, but we don't have much time!" Michelle called back, almost collapsing with relief upon hearing the voice she loved.

"We're trying to break down the door—" the officer began, but Brook overrode him, talking to Michelle.

"Don't worry, Michelle, I'm gonna get you out of there! Everybody, get away from the door!" The girls backed away from the door, wondering what he was going to do.

"Unless he has T.N.T. or superpowers, I don't think—" Trish began, but her words were drowned out in the next moment at a loud—

BANG!

Brook's Bugatti had rammed right through the doors with a mighty force, tearing them off their hinges. He parked it and rushed out running straight to Michelle, who leaped into his arms with tears flowing from her eyes.

"Brook, oh, Brook, you're okay!" She wept in utter joy, as they hugged each other fiercely. Brook's hand stroked Michelle's head as he let out panting breaths, finally releasing him from his worry.

"Michelle... my Michelle... You're safe now." He swept her in his arms, kissing her so passionately that it knocked the wind out of her. But she didn't care; all that mattered was that she was safe in his arms again and that he was alive and kissing her like his life depended on it!

Behind them, Payton and Reece also rushed in, Paige running full-tilt to Payton on seeing him and knocking him to the ground in a hug.

"Paige!" Payton laughed but was soon silenced by her ravaging lips.

"We're an unstoppable couple, aren't we?" She whispered only for him to hear. He smiled, kissing her back with hungry lips.

"Yes, we are." They all hugged each other in turn, a tearful and joyous reunion.

"Where's the chief?" Leslie asked when she didn't see him.

"He's safe, Les, he's catching up with the sheriff," Reece assured her. "That reminds me, we gotta let Jett know you girls are okay—"

"If you're all done sucking each other's faces," Trish began to grumble, "can we all get out of here before a freaking bomb goes off?!"

"Better rinse your mouth, Miss," Officer Cal drawled. "And relax. Bomb's disarmed." Jada breathed in relief and hugged her sister. She then turned to the officers.

"Please. We need your help. Our brother's been shot and we have no idea where he is. We need to find him." She pleaded with them.

"Well Miss, if that ain't our job helpin' civilians, I don't know what we're paid for," Cal said kindly. "And after that, is there somewhere we give you a ride to?"

"Yes," Jada said quietly, "you can take me in. I'm turning myself over."

"Jada!" Trish gasped. "What are you doing?" Even the Night Blazers turned to her in surprise.

"What I should've done sooner," Jada said, patting her sister's back, "paying for my crimes." She and Trish were led away by the two officers, Trish still arguing with her sister about her decision on the way out.

"Well, can't say I'm sorry for her," Paige said, watching them go. "At least she came to her senses and did the right thing."

"And you," Payton tickled her stomach, making her squeal, "I hope you learned your lesson about trusting people on the outside for help!"

"Okay, okay, I did!" Paige gasped, grabbing his hands to make him stop. "Now save that for when we're alone!" Everyone laughed. The sound of another car approaching outside caught everyone's attention and suddenly three people entered the warehouse. One was Bill Ritchie, the sheriff, one was Holden, and the other of course was—

"Morgan!" Leslie cried on seeing him, and rushed into his arms in a hug, weeping. "I'm so glad you're alright!"

"There, there, Les, you know me better than that," Soriano said in a raspy emotion-filled voice. "I wouldn't leave you alone." He weaned her away from his neck and despite everyone watching, planted a long, tender kiss on Leslie's lips. Bill Ritchie scratched his head and muttered, "Well I'll be a son of a gun, Morgan's got a girl!" Payton and Reece whooped and clapped, Brook and Michelle cheered on in laughter, and Paige smirked.

"It's about time, chief. I always knew that was overdue."

"Not like they haven't been doing that when we weren't around," Payton said, folding his arms with a sideways smile.

"Looks like we'll have to give 'em a lot more privacy now," Reece chuckled. Soriano grinned, turning to his crew.

"Thanks, Reece. Now, who's gonna tell Jett?" Everyone laughed, feeling lighter than they had in weeks. Even Holden looked relieved that everything was over. Brook turned to Michelle with an adoring gaze.

"I guess there's just one thing left for us to do, Michelle," he said, wrapping his hand around hers.

"What's that, Brook?" She asked with a love-filled smile at him. He smiled back, winking at her.

"I'll tell you when you meet me at the altar."

The following week passed by in a flurry of activities. Brook wanted to get married to Michelle the very next morning and was torn between saying his vows there in Vegas and going along with his original plan to have Padre Manuel marry them—but Michelle gently put her foot down and persuaded him to wait. She wanted a simple however proper wedding in their hometown church in North Valley like their parents had and wouldn't have it any other way. And that would take a little preparation, at least.

"After all, you do want to see me in a wedding dress, don't you, baby?" She teased Brook, and he manfully remained patient, wanting to fulfill her wishes more than anything else.

Sheriff Bill Ritchie and his squad eventually caught up with the red 'x' and captured him and the Ignis Viperae gang at the cemetery. Linus LaCroix had been brooding there over his brother's grave. He had been prepared to shoot himself after that and it was only the police who intervened and stopped him in time, taking him into custody while he howled and begged for death to join his brother. Hauling the mercenary Ignis Viperae gang was like a Christmas present for the sheriff. Soriano had the satisfaction of watching Zhang and the Mao You get booked for a lifetime and officers Joe and Cal were honored for their roles in assisting.

They had helped Jada and Trish find their brother Austin who as it turned out wasn't too far from the place he was shot and was still alive. They got him to the hospital in time right before the officers led Jada away to take her confession with which Linus LaCroix was convicted and put away for the rest of his life. Trish was mad with grief at losing her sister but she and Austin knew Jada was right. She couldn't live a normal life with that guilt and received a light sentence of a few years in the penitentiary for her cooperation.

Trish for her part, gave all the earnings from the NNC to the Night Blazers, apologizing with heavy remorse for everything her sister put them through. Michelle didn't miss how she extended extra profuse apologies to Brook but since he took them with cool, dignified acceptance, she didn't feel too hostile toward Trish. That was the last she'd ever have to see her again—she and her brother had sold the Inked Glass and decided to do what Jada intended, moving back to their home in Mexico since their debts were all paid off. Jada would join them when she had served her sentence. Michelle couldn't help feeling like it was a 'good riddance to trouble' situation.

And after everything, peace had finally settled for the Night Blazers on returning home... well almost. Because planning a wedding was the last peaceful thing on Michelle's mind.

She was every bit a frantic bride trying to pull together a wedding within a week. For something so simple with just family and friends, there seemed to be a massive list of things to do! There was the cake, flowers, organizing everyone's outfits, making sure the bridesmaid's dresses were all color-coordinated, reserving someplace to host the dinner afterward...

And most of all, the wedding dress.

Paige had to drag Michelle away from the house the day before the wedding date to pick out her dress and had threatened Brook with her fists if he dared to follow. Throwing up his hands in surrender, he promised Michelle he wouldn't. He and Payton went to finalize their tuxedoes instead—Michelle wanted him in 'a dark suit that will make my mouth water' to quote her request.

Of course, Michelle's friends Leah and Brynn ambushed her at the wedding dress boutique, positively shooting down all Paige's ideas for the most plunging and see-through dresses. Paige sighed, brushing off her nails.

"Oh well, maybe if I ever get married..."

"So you are gonna get married? Yay, I can't wait to help you start planning!" Michelle squealed, hugging her. "Payton is gonna be so blown away when he sees—"

"Slow down, angel face, it's not gonna happen any time soon," Paige laughed. "Besides, you have a wedding of your own to get through."

The result of Leah and Brynn's intervention was that Michelle came away with a simple however beautiful, mermaid-style wedding gown, a slim-fitting, modest masterpiece that showed off her slender figure and bared her shoulders. And for her bridesmaid's dresses, her friends both agreed to wear violet much to Paige's relief—she swore she'd show up in leather and fishnets if anyone forced her to wear pink satin.

Meanwhile...

"So, it's really happening, bro," Payton said, clapping Brook on the back. He, Brook, Jett, Reece, Holden, and Soriano were seated in the men's tux shop, checking out suits. Brook had agreed to let Holden come along to his wedding as long as he behaved like a 'soap-washed saint'.

"How does it feel to be giving up your freedom forever?" Reece asked with a grin, earning a punch from Brook.

"Keep telling yourself that, Reece, I think you're jealous," Brook teased him.

"Yeah, having the love of your life is the most liberating thing in the world," Payton echoed his sentiment. "Isn't that right chief?" Soriano looked at him with a chuckle and Reece groaned.

"Ugh, looks like we're the last ones in the singles club, eh Jett?"

"Oh, heck no, I got myself a date with Brynn tomorrow!" Jett said, shaking his head vigorously.

"Et tu, Jett? Really?" Reece asked, looking flabbergasted and clutching his chest.

"Hey, if you ever wanna join me for a drink... y'know, guys without girls..." Holden muttered toward Reece. Reece gave him a half-smile.

"Thanks, bro." Jett looked dismayed.

"Hey, you can't cut me out of the 'guys-only' club!" He began to argue with Holden while the others laughed.

"So, tomorrow's the big day... how do you feel, son?" Soriano asked Brook, laying a hand on his shoulder.

"More than ready, chief. It's something I've always wanted but never thought I could have," Brook replied earnestly. "Getting married, starting a family... it was always my parents' dream. And they got to live it while they could. But me, I never thought I'd get a chance at a luxury like that. Heck, I never even thought anyone would ever want that life with me. And then I found Michelle..." he trailed off, a dreamy smile spreading on his face.

"From what I see, that girl would lay down her life for you," Soriano said, squeezing Brook's shoulder. "And I know you'd do the same for her a hundred times over. You take mighty good care of her, Brook. Do your old man proud and make your mom shed happy tears up there. I believe you both were meant for each other. I've seen it in the way she looks at you—that girl wouldn't trade you for anything."

"She's my world," Brook said softly. Soriano smiled.

"You may not have gotten the life your parents wanted you to have—I tried my best with you, true—but I know the love in your heart is everything they could ever hope for you to have. That'll see you and Michelle through thick and thin."

"Thanks, chief," Brook said, choking up a little as he hugged Soriano. Payton joined them and soon Jett and Reece followed, Jett yelling 'group hug!' in the middle of the store. Soriano pulled Holden in too when he saw him hesitate.

"You're part of the family now too, son," he said to Holden, who smiled abashedly. When they broke up, Payton cleared his throat.

"Ahem, now, let's get ready for a wedding."

The big day finally arrived. Everyone but Paige and Michelle had assembled at the quaint little chapel where Padre Manuel served mass every day (Paige would drive the bride in later). Today, however, the whole altar was specially decorated with yellow roses, white stargazer lilies, and white satin bows. Michelle's friends Leah and Brynn were waiting with flower baskets in their violet gowns at the entrance. Soriano, Payton, Jett, Reece, Holden, and Leslie were seating up front near the altar all dressed up in their tuxes, Leslie in a modest violet gown. Brook alone stood under the flower arch beside Padre Manuel, waiting.

Soon, the chapel pipe organ opened the bars of Mendelssohn's wedding march and the doors of the chapel opened. A stunning angel in white glided through them—an angel with long flowing brown hair, half tied up with a floral wreath and a delicate veil shielding her face. In her hands was a luscious bouquet of yellow roses and on her face was a rosy-lipped smile. Behind her, equally stunning in violet, was Paige, holding her train.

Leah and Brynn went ahead of her, dropping white rose petals in her path. She walked across them, her eyes fixed on the figure in a dark suit at the altar, his long hair brushing his shoulders and his eyes shining with adoration at her. When she finally reached him and took his hand, it was like time froze and they were the only two souls in the world. And then Padre Manuel spoke.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..." Michelle already felt the tears coming on. She couldn't believe this was finally happening! She was moments away from becoming Brook's, moments away from the greatest event of her life. No, she couldn't let her overflowing heart spill its joy yet. She still had sacred words to say to the man she loved and put a ring on him. After that, maybe.

Soon, the ceremony reached the exchange of vows. Brook lifted Michelle's veil and his breath hitched—her beauty was blinding. He gazed at her like he was about to burst with love but subdued himself as he took her hands and said his vows with his feelings evident in his voice.

"I, Brook Havens, take you, Michelle Patterson, for my lawful wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death does us part." And he slipped the golden band on her finger. Michelle had a hard time containing herself but put in the effort for his sake, not wanting to mess anything up.

"I, Michelle Patterson, take you, Brook Havens, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death does us part." And she slipped the golden band on his finger. She raised joyful eyes to him. They barely knew what happened after that, they were so lost in each other's eyes. And even when they faced the altar, their hands lay intertwined on Michelle's lap, each other's fingers massaging the other. It was only when a certain prompt reached their ears did they awaken back to reality.

"In the sight of God and these witnesses, I now pronounce you husband and wife! You may now kiss the bride." Padre Manuel glanced at Brook with a smile who looked blank. Reece hissed at him.

"Psst! Kiss her already, dude!" Brook suddenly realized what was happening and a wide smile broke out on his face. He grabbed Michelle by the waist and pulled her to his body.

"My Michelle," he whispered. She smiled back at him.

"My Brook." And their lips crashed together like two inseparable ocean waves. The onlooking crew and Michelle's friends broke out in loud hoots and whistles and squeals, clapping madly. Brook leaned her back, doing a dip while he continued to savor her mouth with his tongue, securing her in his arms. Paige whooped, 'Yeah, baby!' making Padre Manuel raise his eyebrows at her. She gave a sheepish grin and sat down after that.

"Now let's get partying!" Jett whooped, pumping the air. After the ceremony was over, the crew headed to a little outdoor field nearby where a tent was all set up for the reception. Michelle gasped when she saw the place because the crew had set everything up themselves—the place was absolutely fabulous, decked out with golden lights in the ceiling and flower pedestals and ribbons in every corner.

"You guys did all this for us?" She asked, tearing up. "You're the best!" And she hugged everyone in turn. Soriano lifted his wine glass and proposed a toast, the first of the night.

"To Brook and Michelle, my kids whom I'm very proud of. May your love bind you two together for the rest of your lives, and may they be for many years to come." He glanced affectionately at his two best friends' children. "May health and joy be yours forever, and through all the storms of life, may you be each other's strength. You're family now, cherish each other. And may nothing ever keep you apart." Michelle's eyes finally spilled over and she gave Soriano a tight hug before everyone cheered to that and drank.

"To Brook and Michelle!"

The rest of the night passed by in vivacious enjoyment, dancing and dining, plenty of photo-taking, and good-humored anecdote-sharing. Jett made the newly wedded couple blush with his toast, after several glasses of wine.

"To Michelle and Brook, my beautiful little sister and bro for all ages. May you always find happiness in each other—especially in bed!" Michelle coughed her wine out at that, mercifully without staining her dress while everyone broke out in laughter.

"Nice going, Jett, now you put that in everyone's head!" Reece groaned while everyone else rolled on the floor. Brook tugged at his collar, feeling just as hot in the face as Michelle although his hand did squeeze hers in excitement.

"He's not wrong, you know," he whispered to her while she contained her laughter, "and I can't say I'm not looking forward to it with you." Michelle went as red as the wine she was drinking at that and Reece guffawed.

"Brook, you old dog, what did you say to her?" Brook gave him a friendly shove, grinning.

"Nothing I wanna share with the crew, Reece." The next incident that left everyone in fits of laughter was Paige's demure offer of wedding cake to Jett—right before she smacked the whole slice in his face. He took it very well though, even attempting to lick the icing off his own face, making everyone clutch their sides for stitches.

The night wore on, everyone dancing with each other and especially stealing a dance with the bride after her first one with Brook. Soriano gave her a kiss on the forehead saying her father would be proud as he spun her around the dance floor, Jett attempted to do a comical salsa with her and even Holden had a dance with her, wishing her a timid 'congratulations' as he swayed quietly with her.

"Thanks, Holden." She smiled at him. "And thanks for coming." Michelle glanced around at everyone after the dances, fondness filling her heart. These people before her became her everything; who would've thought that a year ago she'd meet a bunch of outlaws in the desert who would turn out to be her closest family and that she'd find the love of her life among them? She couldn't have guessed it in her wildest dreams.

"You ready to go home?" Brook asked her later that night, sidling to her. She turned to him with a smile.

"I'd hate to break the party up..." she gave a yawn.

"Tired, baby?" Brook asked, sitting down and pulling her into his lap so she could lean on him. She hummed sleepily, resting her forehead on his while he locked his arms around her waist.

"Mmm... A little. I guess everything is catching up with me."

"We didn't exactly get a break after all the mayhem from last week and already you threw yourself into planning this wedding. No wonder you're tired..." Brook paused, looking thoughtful. "You know, we can save our wedding night for another time—it doesn't have to be tonight," he said, nuzzling her cheek. Michelle glanced at him in surprise.

"I talked to Soriano already—he said we can spend one more night at the apartment and go home tomorrow after a good night's sleep. I had a feeling it'd be better if we got some much-needed rest first."

"But Brook, are you sure—"

"I'm not gonna wear out my beautiful bride when I know she needs her sleep," Brook said with a loving smile, drawing circles on her back. He pecked her lips, a flash of blue fire crossing his eyes.

"Besides, when you're well-rested, I plan to keep you up all night." Michelle gulped at that, pleasant heat filling her insides at the thought.

"So, shall we?" Brook asked, helping her stand up. She smiled at him.

"Not just yet... there's one last thing I have to do." She turned to Paige, saying, "It's time." Paige winked at her.

"On it." She turned and hollered at the top of her voice, "Hey, ladies! Get your asses up front if you wanna catch the bouquet!" leaving the guys in fits of laughter.

"Paige!" Leslie said reproachfully as she came forward. Paige joined her and Michelle's giggling friends as they formed a line a little ways from Michelle.

"Alright Michelle, we're ready!" Paige called out. Michelle turned around, closed her eyes, and flung her bouquet behind her. It arced through the air and flew right into the open hands of—

"Leslie!" Paige exclaimed, before clapping. "Looks like you're taking a trip down the aisle next!" Michelle's friends went 'aww' while Leslie looked so surprised when she caught the bouquet that she stared at it blankly. Suddenly, she dropped it to the ground and covered her mouth.

"I—I need to..." she got no further as she made retching noises before running out of the tent, much to everyone's amazement.

"Leslie! What's wrong?" Soriano called out, attempting to run after her. But Paige stopped him.

"I'll go," she said, a secret smile on her face as she hurried after Leslie. Everybody turned to the chief with wide eyes.

"Chief, does that mean..." Michelle's mouth fell open. Brook blinked, Reece began to cough violently and Payton began to chortle.

"Better tie the knot before tyke gets here, chief." Even Holden looked stunned and Jett nearly stumbled and fell.

"NO WAY! Is chief gonna have a baby?!" Soriano cleared his throat, growing red up to his ears.

"Looks like it, Jett. As for tying the knot, Payton," he said in a gruff voice, "I already took care of that back in Vegas." Brook looked like he got the shock of his life.

"Chief! You already—with Leslie—in Vegas—and didn't tell us?!"

"It's not that hard to get a license, Brook," Soriano said, a little smile coming on his face. "As for a wedding... Life's too short, dunno what can happen. I guess I better get moving." Michelle laughed, hugging Soriano tight.

"Congratulations, Chief! I know you'll make a great dad." She turned to Brook after that with a glowing smile.

"And you will too, someday," she said softly, and he pulled her into a loving embrace, kissing her forehead.

"I just got my license to love you, Michelle. But I can't wait to start a family with you now that you're finally mine."

"I was already yours, Brook," she said affectionately, "now you just got the license to prove it."

"Sweet pot roast, the chief's having a baby," Jett muttered as he walked past, still reeling from the news. "What's next?"

"What's next," Brook said in response to Jett's question with a sparkle in his eye as he threaded his hand with Michelle's, "is us for the rest of our lives."
