Upside-Down Magic Book 2

Chapter 1

The book opens up with Upside-Down Fluxer Nory Horace mentioning her kitten-goat/"koat" form, in which her Aunt Margo strongly dislikes. Nory is expecting her best friend, Upside-Down Flare Elliott Cohen, to walk with her to school. Unfortunately, Upside-Down Fluxer Bax Kapoor shows up instead and turns into a rock.

Chapter 2

Nory panics and she figures the quickest way to bring Bax to Dunwiddle Magic School is a baby carriage owned by Margo used for gardening according to Nurse Felix Riley who told Bax after he woke up with Burtlebox (a substance used to turn Bax from being a rock into himself) in his mouth.

Bax leaves Nurse Riley's office and sees the fifth-grade Fluxer class and laments that he'll never be in the class. He also mentions the Pennies for Potions drive and he is saddened that he forgot to bring some of his loose change for it. Bax finally arrives at Ms. Starr's Upside-Down Magic classroom and the Upside-Down Fuzzy teacher is making the class do hula-hooping, which Bax thinks is stupid. Nory asks Bax how he is when she sees him and Bax is embarrassed by the fact that Nory took him to school in a baby carriage.

Chapter 3

Upside-Down Flares Elliott Cohen and Willa Ingeborg arrive to class during math and Ms. Starr excuses Nory and Bax to see Mr. Vitomin, who wants to be called "Coach" as he is the coach of the Dunwiddle kittenball team, for training/tutoring. Nory likes having Mr. Vitomin as a mentor, but Bax doesn't. Mr. Vitomin then informs the two that kittenball practice is every Monday and Wednesday.

Chapter 4

The next day, Elliott and Nory have a conversation about the day before and enter Dunwiddle by slipping on pebbles and falling. Flicker Principal Gonzalez appears and blames the eighth-graders for it, but they deny it. Principal Gonzalez turns himself to go get the maintenance staff and janitors to clean up the pebbles and Lacey Clench blames the UDM kids for turning the coins into pebbles. Marigold retaliates by telling Lacey that her "manners are broken" and accidentally shrinks Lacey by grabbing her wrist after Marigold slips on a pebble, lands in the invisible fountain of the Flickers, and also accidentally ruins Lacey's cardigan in the process via it getting wet.

Chapter 5

Nory watches the janitors and crew clean up the pebbles and she spots Bax in his rock form being made fun of. Elliott and Nory defend Rock-Bax from the "normal" students, but Principal Gonzalez catches the other students taunting Bax and orders them to go back to class. Nory and Elliott takes Rock-Bax to Nurse Riley via a wheelbarrow under the watchful eyes of the other students.

In Nurse Riley's office, Rock-Bax is placed in a corner temporarily, while Tiny Lacey is on the only cot in the room. Nurse Riley tells Nory and Elliott that a flying taxi (aka "Aunt Margo") will take Lacey and her parents to a hospital to turn her back to normal size after the unfortunate Shrinking accident. Lacey finally screams that the UDM kids are "dangerous" and that "they shouldn't be allowed at Dunwiddle". Nurse Riley tries to calm Lacey, but Lacey threatens Nory, saying "You can tell Marigold that this is far from over". Nory responds by turning into a dragon-kitten/"dritten" (as she "didn't know what to say") and scares the crap out of Tiny Lacey. Nurse Riley restrains Nory, tells her to flux back into human form, and owe Tiny Lacey an apology.

Chapter 6

Back in Ms. Starr's UDM classroom, a trust exercise is held; each person holds two person's hands and squeezes them like an electrical current. Nory is situated between Elliott and Marigold. The current goes on for some time when Nory randomly Fluxes into a squid-puppy/"squippy" and runs over to one of Ms. Starr's legs and hides in her pants. Sebastian then starts screaming about the shape of everyone's sound waves (which is laughter because of Nory's "squippy"), as he can see invisible things and sound waves. Elliott starts spitting ice on Marigold and chaos ensues. Ms. Starr yells at her class to be sensitive to Sebastian and orders Elliott to get Sqippy-Nory off of her leg and Pepper and Sebastian to go to the art room to get "glitter, glue, sticks, and yarn. We're going to skip math this morning and do a therapeutic art project". Elliott gets Squippy-Nory off of Ms. Starr easily as Nory trusts the Upside-Down Flare and Nory turns back into her normal self. Ms. Starr then tells the class the therapeutic art project is "time to listen to Mozart and express ourselves with glitter".

That night, Aunt Margo tells Nory about an outrage about Tiny Lacey and her parents being sent to hospital to reverse Marigold's accidental Shrinking. She then asks her niece about what happened and Nory just tells Margo that she "doesn't get along with Lacey Clench" and mentions she's going to join Dunwiddle's kittenball club. Aunt Margo says she loves kittenball and mentions that Nory's mother played kittenball as a yarnball swatter and "got licensed for a tiger". Margo ends her story by saying that her sister/Nory's mother could've played professionally if she hadn't met Stone Horace and became a doctor. Nory says she doesn't know the rules about kittenball and Aunt Margo says there's a game on that night on TV and Figaro "Figs" Russo (Margo's boyfriend who runs the pharmacy in town) is invited to make cinnamon rolls as a treat to eat while watching the game.

In the Kapoor household, Bax puts ladybugs found near his father's spot on the couch and puts them outside. Mr. Kapoor finally tells his son he lost his job at the "local art museum" and he "was hoping to find a new job", which is obviously failing hard. The two then watch the Tigerball game against the Pouncers and the San Antonio Stripeys and "the Stripeys lost" the game, much to Bax's disappointment and Coach's glee.

The book then describes's Bax life between his parents, as they are divorced; Bax plays the piano, his mother is "a police detective" (as she is a Flicker), and he still turns into a rock on random occasions.

Chapter 7

The following day, Marigold, Nory, and Pepper run into Lacey at lunch and Lacey sneers at the three that she's going to start a petition to completely obliterate the UDM class.

The first afternoon of kittenball practice occurs and the three other Fluxers there are Akari, Finn, and Paige (who are deciding to sign Lacey's petition). Coach teaches them about passing the yarnball via tail smacks and Finn practices with Akari and Paige practices with Nory. However, Nory turns into a mosquito-kitten/"mitten" and Coach orders her to turn back into her normal self and Nory does that. Paige is startled that Nory is one of the upside-down magic students and says that she, along with Finn and Akari, shouldn't be afraid of upside-down magic.

Chapter 8

At lunch the day after Nory's unfortunate "mitten" accident, Nory calls for a meeting with the rest of the UDM students. Andres informs his friends that his birthday is on Saturday and all of the UDM students are invited to his birthday party. Nory then begins talking about the stones in the Pennies for Potions jar and who is the UDM class did it.

During mentoring, Coach orders Nory to turn into a dritten and she does, destroying Coach's entire office. Nory turns back into normal form and Bax fluxes into rock and he wakes up in Nurse Riley's office. Bax and Coach agree to work on a "food diary", in which Bax writes down the things he eats and it helps Coach find if Bax has any food allergies. A unnamed Fuzzy student then walks into the office with a toad up her nose.

Chapter 9

Andres' birthday party happens on Saturday and the UDM students have fun. During the party, Pepper asks Andres if he lives near Lacey and he says that he lives near Rune. Bax figures that the Sparkies are plotting against the UDM class and Nory completely agrees with them.

After camouflaging Andres and Nory fluxes into a black kitten, the Sparkies plot how to get rid of the UDM class. They taunt all of Ms. Starr's students and Willa Ingeborg begins to cry. Andres then burst out in rage in response to Lacey's plans to expose the UDM class and the Sparkies leader figures out the UDM kids were spying on her group.

Chapter 10

The Sparkies then chase the Upside-Down Magic kids and throw flaming tennis balls at them. Elliott and Marigold shrink and freeze them as the UDM are almost overrun by the Sparkies, but Pepper's Fiercing of the animals in Bax's house's lawn force the Sparkies to flee.

Chapter 11

A few days after the Sparkie incident, Bax and Nory are ordered by Coach to focus on their flame-like spirit to control their magic.

The next day, an entire row of lockers (which include Lacey's, Zinnia's, Rune's, Akari's, Finn's and Bax's lockers) turn into stone. Lacey continues to blame the UDM for the rock magic in Dunwiddle's halls. Principal Gonzalez appears and tells all the students to go to class. In Ms. Starr's class, the falling trust exercise happens.

Chapter 12

In the afternoon, Paige and Nory buy chocolate at the local store to get the taste of "pomegranate juice and seaweed" that Coach gave them out of their mouths. Paige and Nory then argue about who turned the student's objects in their lockers to stone.

The next day during mentoring, Bax turns into a rock on purpose and he can hear what Nory and Coach are saying and he fluxes back into himself in Nurse Riley's office on his own terms. Nurse Riley, Coach, and Bax celebrate this with ginger ale soda.

Back in Ms. Starr's classroom, Nory turns into a black kitten to ask how Bax did with his rock version of himself and Ms. Starr hisses at her to stay in human form during class without looking at her.

Chapter 13

At Taco Friday lunch the following day, the UDM kids talk about Lacey's petition and about the stones in the hallways. Then, Nory notices Akari, Finn, and Paige are going to sign Lacey's petition and Nory stands up for herself and the other UDM kids by saying in a loud voice so the entire cafeteria will hear why Lacey is wrong in removing UDM.

Chapter 14

That afternoon, the UDM class goes to a pizzeria before going to the kittenball game and they talk about ways to defend themselves from the Sparkies if they go to the game. "In the end, only Bax, Nory, Sebastian, and Willa went to the game." The four take their seats in the indoor kittenball arena and Lacey already starts mocking the four UDM kids. Rune had pick pocketed Sebastian to take his blindfold and she, along with Lacey and Zinnia (who had jingle bells and a triangle, respectively), taunt Sebastian about the sound waves he can see. The game starts between the Dunwiddle Catnips and the Twinkle Tidbits. Then, the Sparkies sing "Rain, ran, go away! Come again another day!" to get the reaction out of Willa in the arena: indoor rain. The four UDM kids stay persistent to not even fall for the Sparkies, but Bax turns the kittenball arena in stone.

Chapter 15

Bax runs to his father, along with Nory, and tells him that the stones at Dunwiddle Magic School were caused by him by an overdose of Burtlebox given to him by Nurse Riley. Nory then figures out by herself that the stone magic was a side effect of the overdose itself. Mr. Kapoor finally tells his son that he's an Upside-Down Fuzzy: he makes animals whatever emotion they feel when they are near him.

Chapter 16

On Monday morning, a meeting about upside-down magic is held "in Principal Gonzalez's office".  When it's over Nory and Bax go back to the UDM classroom and Sebastian tells the class that "the game never finished, and the Catnips have to replay the Tidbits this Friday" as the arena was turned back to normal via "a mix of Burtlebox, pomegranate juice, sardine oil, and anti-itch, dissolved in almond milk"

At kittenball practice, Nory confesses to Akari, Finn, and Paige that Bax was the person who turned things to stone. Paige asks her kittenball friends about the petition as they eat Reese's Peanut Butter Cups before Coach gets back. Nory then realizes she forgot about the petition.

Chapter 17

On Tuesday morning, a meeting is held in the gym about Lacey's petition to remove the Upside-Down Magic class. Mr. Gonzalez deems it unworthy to pass, despite Lacey's protest. Carmen Padillo, Andres Padillo's Fluxer sister in eighth-grade, starts to give a speech, but the eighth-graders begin throwing snowballs at the audience as their yearly prank. Nory then finds out that Elliott and Willa were helping the eight-graders after their Flare mentor, Mrs. Cruciferous, noticed that when Willa's rain was combined with Elliott's ice, snow was created. A giant snowball fight occurs in the Dunwiddle Magic School gym and Nory hopes the best of the future is left to come.

Note (01/03/2017): I borrowed this book first from the library on 01/02/2017 and returned it 01/05/2017. I thought the book was interesting, as it took a different approach on Quidditch from the "Harry Potter" series.
