Upside-Down Magic 5
Chapter 1
Upside-Down Fluxer Elinor "Nory" Horace turns into a "squippy"/squid-puppy while waiting for her teacher, Upside-Down Fuzzy Eloise Starr, and her aunt, Flyer Margo. She then runs down a hallway and breaks into one of the lockers and destroys it as Margo finds her. Nory turns back into herself and the parent-teacher conference begins.
Chapter 2
There are 5 types of magic in the world: Flyers (can fly), Flickers (can turn themselves or other things invisible), Flares (can create fire), Fluxers (can turn into animals), and Fuzzies (can communicate with animals and train them). However, there are people with Upside-Down Magic - which is magic that doesn't fit in with the 5 Fs. Nory pets Carrot, a talking Miniature Cashmere Lop rabbit, and eat chocolate as Ms. Starr shows Margo around the room. Then, Margo and Ms. Starr sit down and talk about Nory. Nory's current grades are all As (or "Os" in the series). Nory is proud of herself when Fluxer Coach Vitomin enters the room. Nory has been training with Coach Vitomin to control her animal forms and she is also in the 5th grade after-school kittenball club. Nory shows off her kittenball skills and her dragon-kitten/"dritten" form. The room is in applause.
Chapter 3
Outside in the hallway, "Upside-Down Flare"/Fluid Willa Ingeborg sits with her parents, Fluxers Chase Ingeborg and Gaia Ingeborg, and sister, Flare Edith Ingeborg. The family hears cheering inside and Willa thinks it's "Upside-Down Flare"/Freezer Elliott Cohen's conference. Chase turns into a lizard to investigate and sees that it's Nory's conference. Nory, Margo, and Eloise then exit the UDM classroom and Willa begins her meeting. Willa "has mostly Q's. She has a Regrettable in gym and a Proficient in literature." Ms. Starr and the Ingeborgs talk about how to help Willa as Willa begins to cry.
Chapter 4
Willa's rain floods the classroom and Ms. Starr and the Ingeborgs talk about Willa in another room. Willa tries to calm her magic but it's no good.
As she's doing a headstand to stop the rain, Elliott Cohen enters the room with an umbrella and lets Willa comes under his umbrella. It is still raining and Elliott turns the rain into snow. Willa calms down, but then the snow really stops when Willa internally recites a poem. The two then tell the janitor about the situation and Willa's parents take Willa home.
Chapter 5
The next morning, Nory and Elliott walk to school. Aunt Margo has left for her flying taxi service. Nory tells Elliott that she and Blurper dragons both like fruit (she was reading a Blurper Dragon book past her bedtime last night). They spot Fluxer Carmen Padillo taking her little brother Upside-Down Flyer Andres Padillo to school and Nory asks Elliott how his conference went. He says his conference was okay and that Willa's rain moved the conference to Coach Vitomin's office. Nory calls Willa "a crybaby" since she believes Willa is weak. Elliott chastises Nory. Then they asks each other if they met Carrot.
In the UDM classroom, Nory's getting better at her headstand. Nobody, except Ms. Starr, likes interpretive dance. The only thing that makes interpretive dance better, according to Fitter Marigold Ramos, is pop music. Upside-Down Fluxer Bax Kapoor thinks interpretive dance is "embarrassing no matter what they danced to." Bax then fluxes into a piano and starts playing "Crazy Daisy Shame" by Everyday Cake and makes the class feel better. After that, the UDM kids get an introduction to Bing Day. Fierce Pepper Phan, Upside-Down Flicker Sebastian Boondoogle, Elliott, Andres, and Willa know what it is. Nory, Bax, and Marigold don't. Bing Day is on November 16th and celebrates Flare Zeponiah Bing's heroic actions of saving Dunwiddle during a harsh winter. After the video ends, Ms. Starr tells the kids that the 5th graders have to do posters describing something from the 1800s timeline or something about Zeponiah. She also tells them that "The sixth graders are making dioramas, and the seventh grade will perform the annual Bing Day music concert featuring folk songs of 1893. The eighth grade will treat us to an all-grade read-aloud of 'Zeponiah Bing: An Epic Poem of Praise.' " Nory starts asking questions about the parade and Ms. Starr tells her that this is her first Bing Day also. Ms. Starr hands out partners: Elliott and Bax, Sebastian and Marigold, Andres and Pepper, and Nory and Willa. Nory and Willa start brainstorming and Nory hates working with Willa.
Chapter 6
The next day, Elliott and Willa sees Flare Mrs. Cruciferous "Mrs. C", their Flare mentor, at the high school pool. Elliott practices making ice cubes while Willa trains with Mrs. C about moving clouds. Willa doesn't move the cloud the first few times, and then puts it on top of Elliott, making Willa a little evil. Mrs. C then tells Willa to make the cloud disappears, and cloud disappears on the fourth try. During free swim later, Elliott and Willa talk about their Bing Day projects and how Nory has been acting lately.
Chapter 7
Nory and Elliott work on their homework at Aunt Margo's. Nory practices her kitten and dritten before she and Elliott study for their tests. Suddenly, the phone rings and Nory turns back into human form and answers it. The person on the phone is Nory's father, Sage Academy Headmaster Flicker Stone Horace. He congratulates her on getting all A's in her classes. Nory then strives to get an M (Marvelous) (IRL: A++) on her Bing Day poster.
Willa gets home to see her Gaia lounging on lawn chairs. Willa reads a book while Gaia answers emails. As the sun is about to set, Gaia fluxes into a calico cat and Willa pets her. Then, Chase announces that dinner is ready. Willa and Gaia bring their things inside. The Ingeborg household is under renovation because of Willa's magic. Dinner is "stir-fried rice and marinated tofu". Edith comes down stairs and complains about having "to write a ten-page research paper" for Bing Day. Edith tells her parents she wants "to go to Tornado City" to become a journalist during college. Chase stops her because income is fixed. Edith blames Willa for the fixed income and thinks about putting Willa in the shed (it's a threat). Chase and Gaia chastise their oldest daughter.
Gaia and Willa watch a TV show about Upside-Down Flares like Willa (Fluids). One of those people is "Shaylene Waterhouse, from Bimplecester, England." The reporter says there are "four known raining Upside-Down Flares .... Waterhouse, Keats, Birdy, and Carpenter-Balliwash." Willa thinks the reporter is incorrect, since Willa is a rain talent herself. She also wishes to become like Shaylene Waterhouse.
Chapter 8
The next day, Ms. Starr's class goes to the Dunwiddle Magic School Library to research for their Bing Day projects. Fluxer Goodwin Wang is the librarian. Projects: Elliott and Bax - 1800s food, Andres and Pepper - single-sex education, Sebastian and Marigold - history of parades, Nory and Willa - 1893 winter. Nory and Willa do research (on Nory's orders) while the other kids are fascinated by their subjects. Nory grabs tools for the project as Willa begins to rain. Nory blames Willa for not keeping her magic under control and Willa says that Nory thinks she's "a crybaby." Nory chastise Elliott before Goodwin shows up and the fight dissolves. Bax and Elliott are disgusted my 1800s food (Me: 😂). Elliott comments that "They put everything on toast back then ... They were obsessed with toast."
At lunch, Willa watches the sixth grade Flyers play flyball outside. Marigold then appears and they talk about their powers. Marigold classifies herself as "a Fitter" and Willa classfies herself as "an .... Aqua talent". They try to come with a name that beings with F for Willa's magic.
Chapter 9
Margo uses her Flyer magic to put the dishes away while doing a crossword puzzle (Me: THE AUTHORS ARE CHEATING FLYER MAGIC!). Nory gets mad about the project and Margo's dishes stop putting themselves away. Margo then takes Nory for a flight above Dunwiddle to clear her head. Nory is also fed up with Zeponiah and Margo tells Nory about Zeponiah's wife, Fluxer Gertrude Raspberry (Me: THEY PUT LESBIANS IN THE BOOK!). Nory and Margo then go back to their house and Nory decides to give Elliott a ride over Dunwiddle some time.
Chapter 10
On Monday, Willa talks to Carrot about controlling magic. Carrot says she embraces both the bad and the good while training with Pepper. Willa tries the technique and it works.
Elliott gets to school second and he apologizes to Willa.
Chapter 11
Nory storms into the UDM classroom and yells at Elliott for not showing up at Aunt Margo's house for a ride to Dunwiddle Magic School. The other kids have arrived also to school. When the bell rings, Ms. Starr tells the kids to do semaphore work, which is communicated to someone only with flags.
At lunch, Nory eats with Andes and Pepper. Willa, Elliott, Sebastian, Bax and Marigold eat lunch together. At recess, Andres, Nory, and Pepper play a game based on their experiences at Dragon Haven. It is where Flyers Lars Ernesto Montmorency (Andres) has to save a Blurper dragon named Rocket (Nory) and a Luminous Dragonette named Pingleton (Pepper). After recess, Nory tells Willa they're not doing the 1893 winter for their project; they're doing Gertrude Raspberry for their project. They plan it out and Willa says it conflicts with her schedule. Nory thinks Willa is a little -----.
At mentoring, Nory tells Coach Vitomin she wants to practice at the high school pool her various mixed kitten forms the next day. Coach is hesitant, but he agrees.
Chapter 12
The next day, Willa goes to the pool with Elliott to train with Mrs. C as Nory, Coach Vitomin, and Bax show up.
Nory practices her squid-kitten/"squitten" before accidentally turning into a porcupine-dolphin/"porcuphin". Porcuphin-Nory wreaks havoc in the pool before Mrs. C evaporates the pool water. Coach apologizes to Mrs. C and chastises Nory.
Chapter 13
On Wednesday, the kids from Dunwiddle Ordinary School and the 5th grade Dunwiddle Magic School go to the Bing Memorial Museum for research for their projects. The museum is Bing's house in Dunwiddle. Nory asks questions, Ms. Starr answers them, and Nory orders Willa to take note. Willa doesn't take the right notes and then blows up in front of Nory. Willa begins to rain and the museum erupts in chaos. Ms. Starr orders the UDM kids to save Bing's items while Willa focuses the rain onto Nory. Nory turns into a dritten and escapes.
Chapter 14
Nory turns back into human form outside and she and Willa ask Ms. Starr to change partners. Ms. Starr refuses. Nory plans to get the project done herself.
Nory gets the project done herself and does the finishing touches with Willa. On Bing Day (Friday), the 5th grade posters are displayed in the hallways. After school, Nory tries handing out reindeer antlers to Elliott, Willa, and Marigold at the lockers. Willa hisses at her and Elliott takes her and Nory to the supply closet and locks them in. He and Marigold demand them to figure themselves out and they leave. Willa begins to rain in the supply closet, hard. As Nory and Willa almost drown, Nory turns into a squippy and saves them both.
Chapter 15
Nory and Willa join the UDM class at the Bing Day Parade. There is a storm brewing in the distance. In the middle of the parade, the line stops and Dunwiddle is about to sing "the Bing Day Sing-Along." At the third verse, it storms and Nory thinks that everyone's belief that "It has never, ever rained on Bing Day!" is ruined. After some prodding by the UDM class, Willa puts the storm over the high school and saves Bing Day. Nory calls Willa "Zeppy" and Willa calls Nory "Gertrude".
Chapter 16
On Monday, the UDM kids gets grades on their posters. Nory and Willa got a B. After lunch, "The Bing Society" has sent Ms. Starr's class "a box of white chocolate polar bears with marshmallow filling. Polar-Bear-Gertrude candies!" Then, they go to the high school pool to celebrate Willa's success. Mrs. C and Coach Vitomin are watching them. Nory asks her if she can flux and Mrs. C says no porcuphin or anything with fur. Nory turns into a pufferfish with the help of Coach Vitomin. Pufferfish-Nory swims in the pool before Willa gets the idea to throw Pufferfish-Nory like a ball to the other students after Pufferfish-Nory jumps around the pool. Nory thinks about fluxing into a kitten-whale/"kale" or a mermaid in the future.
Dunwiddle Magic School's Grading System (5th grade ONLY (I think))
O = Outstanding (IRL Grade: A)
Q = Quite Good, But Nothing to Bang a Drum About (IRL Grade: B)
P = Proficient (IRL Grades: C-D)
R = Regrettable (IRL Grade: F)
Bing Day Sing-Along (Chapter 15, pgs. 164-165)
I borrowed this book from 12/18/2018-01/08/2019. I am considered quitting reading the series because of it's subtle LGBT+ message in it (Zeponiah Bing and Gertrude Raspberry's relationship). But I may still read it because of it's cool premise.
