Chapter 1

Victoria Grace "Tory" Brennan is waiting for her father at the airport. He arrives late and he and Tory introduce themselves. Kit gets Tory's suitcases into his car and he takes her to Morris Island. 

Chapter 2

Kit drives Tory to Morris Island. As they get there, Tory thinks that Kit either lives in Charleston or on Loggerhead Island. Kit lives on Morris Island because he works "For LIRI .... The Loggerhead Island Research Institute." Tory thinks that Morris Island stinks, until she sees the inside of Kit's townhouse. Tory then meets Whitney Rose Dubois, Kit's girlfriend, and finds out her room was formerly Kit's office. Tory goes up to her room.

Chapter 3

Tory charges her phone in her room and explores the room and sees that she likes her room. Kit brings Tory her bags and Tory decides to walk along the Morris Island Beach. As soon as she gets to the beach, she sees three boys talking about a sea turtle named "Donatello". Tory shrieks at them to leave the turtle alone. 

Chapter 4

"Hawaiian Shirt"/Hiram is shocked and "Glasses"/Shelton Devers notices Tory. Tory tells the three that the loggerhead sea turtle is "a protected species." "Long Hair"/Benjamin "Ben" Blue agrees silently. Tory then decides to get her father to help the turtle, but realizes her phone is charging. Ben then races back to the townhouses as Tory gets a hook off the turtle. Ben and Kit appear and Kit helps the turtle. He then tags it and the turtle goes back into the sea. Kit leaves.

Chapter 5

Tory talks to Ben, Shelton, and Hi about the island and where they go to school. The boys go to Bolton Preparatory Academy for school.

Chapter 6

Tory finds out that Ben wanted to visit sandbars in Schooner Creek, but they found the turtle and wanted to help it. Shelton and Hi then throw a Frisbee, but then the Frisbee flies out of the four's sight. Tory, Ben, Shelton, and Hi track the Frisbee at a Civil War bunker.

Chapter 7

Tory, Ben, Shelton, and Hi have stumbled upon a bunker fort from the Civil War called "Battery Greg". Tory crawls inside and finds that there is a view of the ocean from one side of the bunker. The band then explores the bunker and calls it their hideout. Ben, Shelton, and Hi then take Tory to Loggerhead Island.
