Book 1: Shattering the Ley

POV: Kara Tremain, Allan Garrett

Part One

Chapter 1

Kara Tremain, a twelve-year-old child, walks through Hallial's Park in the city of Erenthrall. She has been summoned home from her school early by her father, who needs her to help him with a clock he is making. As Kara walks through Hallial's Park, she looks at the stone statues, including one that looks like a great king. She passes by a Tender (Ley Wielders who have retired to become gardeners), Ischua (unnamed), as she looks at the statue. Noticing Ishcua looking at her, Kara goes into the marketplace, where. As Kara walks through the market, she spots Eredrus (unnamed), a Kormanley priest, walking through the market. The Dogs, soldiers of the Barons (rulers of Erenthrall), find Eredus and proceed to beat him and arrest him for being a Kormanley terrorist. Kara, terrified what she has seen, hurries home.

Kara falls into father's arms as the feels the ley energy surging into her body strongly, hinting that Kara Tremain is an extremely powerful Ley Wielder. The Ley is the white light-like energy that flows throughout the world of the Ley trilogy and acts like water.

Chapter 2

Allan Garrett, a sixteen-year-old teenager, is a Dog present during a party in the Amber Tower (Erenthrall palace) celebrating the seeding of Grass tower. He is under the command of Haggar, an old, gruff Dog who believes that all Dogs should be loyal to the Baron only.

Chapter 3

Baron Arent Pallentor meets with his court (Dogs, Wielders, and servants) to discuss the Kormanley terrorist attacks. Allam is introduced to Daedallen, Terrence, and Prime Wielder Augustus in the meeting.

Dalton and Tyrus discusses Michael's suicide in part 1, chapter 2 and the arrest of Eredrus in part 1, chapter 1. They both agree that the splinter faction of the Kormanley is violent, and Dalton plans to use Tyrus as bait to stop the splinter's future terror.

Kara awakens in her room, a doctor and her father discussing her potential Wielder abilities. She thinks that being a Wielder is pretend play, as she has seen her classmates and friends Cory and Brandt pretend to be them. After the doctor leaves, Kara's father gives Kara some soup and the girl admits the real reason she didn't come home quickly (seen in part 1, chapter 1), and her father forgives her.

Chapter 4

Cory, Kara, and Justin (a boy with dirty-blonde hair and grey eyes) leave school at the end of the day. As they exit the iron gates of the school, Justin freezes, claiming there is man (a "Hound"/highly elusive assassin) following him. Kara and Cory shrug it off, before the three walk into Halliel's Park. As they walk, Ischua (unnamed) confront the three and tells Kara that they need to talk about her powers.

Kara talks Ischua (unnamed) to her house, as Kara's father needs Kara to fix a "Gorrani sandglass". Kara's father is surprised to see Ischua, as the Tender tells him that he thinks that Kara is manifesting her Wielding powers too early, and for both of them to meet him in Halliel's Park after school.

Kara and her father go into Halliel's Park and find Ischua (unnamed) in the park among some trees. Kara cannot bear leaving her parents and her friends, but she knows this must be done. Ischua takes Kara and her father into a hidden grotto near a stream, with a small waterfall above it, and six stones arranged in a circle ("the heart of the park") and tells them that "This grotto was discovered before Erenthrall was even a village, before anything has been built near the confluence of the two rivers. It is believed that the local population realized the power that resided here, even if they had not learned to harness it as we do, and so built  stone monoliths to mark its location. There are such stellae scattered throughout the Baronies, the Desmesnes, the Temerite Islands, and even as far south as the Gorrani Flats and the Archipelago". He mentions that the Nexi (plural for "Nexus") are political and made by the Baronies. Kara notices that the stones in the grotto are all wrong, and Ischua tells her to take her shoes off to see it better. She does and the ley rushes into her. Kara then proceeds to place the stones in the grotto is proper order, and suceeds. She also sees a small blue stone with black swirls in it, and says it doesn't belong in the grotto. Ischua says that the blue stone does not belong in the grotto and that the stone belongs to him.

Chapter 8

Kara Tremain, now a sixteen-year-old teenager, has received her purple robe, signifying her as a Ley Wielder, as Prime Wielders wear black robes. After Kara leaves the testing hall, she runs into dark grotto and runs her fingers over the cloth. Ischua finds her in the grotto, and tells her not to wear the fabric out. For celebration, Ischua takes Kara to a bar that only serves Ley wielders (the password is "copper"). There, Ischua introduces Kara to Marcus Renshaw, an older teenager, whom Kara will be working with on maintaining the stability of the ley in Erenthrall.

Chapter 9

Allan Garrett, now a twenty-year-old man, is lying in bed with his now-wife, Moira (the girl from part 1, chapter 6), also now an adult. Allan wakes Moira up by trying to get sexual with her (which works), and both try to being having intercourse when Morrell Garrett, Allan and Moira's ten-month-old daughter, wakes up in her crib wanting food. Moira leaves the bed and begins feeding Morrell, as Allan begins heating up a fire in his and Moira's apartment (called a "flat" in the novel), since the ley has been acting weird.

Haggar barks at Allan for being late, and for not sleeping in the Dogs' barracks.

Chapter 10

Kara and Marcus head over the Eld District ley node, which powers the barges (subway station) of the district. Kara feels guilt over losing Justin in the Shadow district (as seen in part 1, chapter 6) as she walks into the station, but quickly shoves the guilt out of her mind. An old guard takes Marcus and Kara down to the ley line, where a part of it is now like a whirlpool or a riptide. Marcus fixes the distorted ley to normal, and assures the guard that the Wielders have seen it many times. After the guard leaves, Marcus admits to Kara that it was the third ley line distortion the Wielders had seen, and he thinks that the distortions will not be leaving Erenthrall. As Kara and Marcus head up back to the platforms, Kara hears a high-pitched whining and a ley distortion (a mosaic, black hole-like version of the ley) appears and suddenly sucks a woman's hand into it. Kara tries to make the distortion disappear, but does not do it quickly. Before Kara can fully make the distortion disappear, the distortion disappears on its own and severs the woman's fingers off of her body. People have noted that Kara made the distortion, which was huge when it first appeared, shrink very rapidly.

Janis, Allan and Garrett's wet nurse, screams in horror as Allan bursts into his apartment. Allan begins fractically packing, and Janis does not know why Moira is not with him.

Note: I read chapters 1 to 14 of the book when I borrowed it. I did not finish it, as I like books that are immediately thrown into the action with the one protagonist/one plotline formula (or a few protagonists/few plotlines formula), and this book was slow to get into the action and there were multiple protagonists/multiple plotlines in the book. Chapters 1 to 14 are in detail (since I did read those chapters), chapters 15 to 28 are general summaries of what happened in the chapter (since I did not read them). WIP = work in progress
