His Majesty's Dragon
Part One
Chapter 1
After the HMS Reliant successfully defeats the Amitie, Captain William "Will" Laurence and his crew transfer the Amitie's cargo onto the Reliant. The cargo is a dragon egg that's about to hatch.
The crew prepare for the dragonet hatching on the ship and when the time comes, Jonathan Carver was chosen beforehand to train the dragonet, but the dragonet chooses Laurence as his rider. Laurence named the dragonet "Temeraire" after the French ship of the same name. Laurence then takes Temeraire to his room where Temeraire sleeps in a hammock.
Chapter 2
The next day, Temeraire is put on the front of the ship to keep the Reliant afloat. The Celestial is then given a tunny (a type of fish) as his breakfast. A week had passed since Temeraire's birth. The Reliant is heading towards Funchal, Madeira Island when Gordon, a servant, accidentally goes overboard. Temeraire and Laurence have their first flight as dragon and rider and save Gordon before the servant drowns. Later, Laurence introduces Temeraire to books and the dragon begins his fascination with books.
Chapter 3
The Reliant lands at Funchal and Admiral Croft is shocked that a dragonet (Temeraire) has hatched on the Reliant. Croft and Laurence talk for a bit about Temeraire and Laurence's crew before Temeraire finished his meal.
Laurence and Temeraire fly over Madiera Island and have frequent rest breaks as they go to a nearby city. They have to find what breed Temeraire is. At one of the stops, Temeraire notices sheep in a pasture and finds a rock that has "pyrite intergrown with quartz crystal and rock" (it's the size of Laurence's fist).
At one city, someone doesn't know what breed Temeraire is and recommends Laurence to a "Sir Edward Howe". Laurence then finds a map around Madiera and finds "a book on mineralogy for Temeraire." He then writes a letter to Edward Howe and finds Temeraire on a beach. The next day, Laurence finds Edward in the city and introduces him to Temeraire on the beach. Edward immediately says that Temeraire is a Chinese Imperial dragon.
Edward gives Laurence books about dragon breeds and Laurence swims with Temeraire for a bit (also Laurence washes his clothes). After Laurence gets dressed and prepares to fly around Madiera on Temeraire when James and Greyling Volatilus/"Volly" approach them and introduce themselves. Laurence leads James and Volly to Laurence's rented cabin. Volly and Temeraire eat cows and Laurence and James eat and talk in the cabin. It has been three weeks since Temeraire hatched.
Laurence and Temeraire are fly to Gibraltar on Madiera and whenAdmiral Croft, Captain Portland, and Lieutenant Dayes go to Laurence's cabin. Laurence converses with the men and they decide that Laurence goes back to the Reliant and Temeraire has to go to covert to be trained. After the men leave, Temeraire is frightened to leave Laurence, but Laurence assures him that he won't leave him.
Part 2
Chapter 4
The next day, Regal Copper Laetificat is teaching Temeraire about roaring. She demonstrates for him and he copies her. Laetificat's rider, Portland, is taking Laurence and Temeraire to a training covert in northern England.
Temeraire and Laurence head to Chatham, where Aerial Command is situated. After talking to Admiral Powys, Admiral Bowen, and Lieutenant Greene, Temeraire and Laurence are sent to Loch Laggan in Scotland to train. But first, they head to Laurence's parents mansion. There is a party there and Laurence runs into his father, Lord Allendale. Lord Allendale disowns him. The next day, Laurence runs into his betrothed, Edith, and she screams at him. After breakfast, Laurence introduces Lady Montagu and Lady Allendale to Temeraire outside the mansion before Laurence and Temeraire leave.
Chapter 5
Laurence and Temeraire arrive at Loch Laggan covert and Laurence is introduced to Malachite Reaper Celeritas and Lieutenant John Granby and Martin (an apprentice), while Temeraire hangs out in the courtyard. Granby takes Laurence on a tour around the training grounds (includes baths, dining hall, rooms, feeding grounds). Afterward, Laurence and Temeraire meet Regal Copper Maximus and Winchester Levitas. Levitas has been abused by his rider, Jeremy Rankin. Laurence and Temeraire then sleep in the dragon courtyard. It has been six weeks since Temeraire hatched.
Chapter 6
The next morning, Laurence meets Berkley, Maximus' rider, and Berkley accuses Laurence of sabotaging his dragon's brain. Laurence denies it and Berkley takes off. After breakfast, Laurence and Temeraire are tested by Celeritas and Maximus and Berkey for speed (controlled and normal) and resisting reflexes.
Laurence and Granby talk about Temeraire the rest of the day and after dinner, Laurence meets Jeremy Rankin, Catherine Harcourt, Longwing Lily, Cadet Emily Roland, Cadet Andrew Morgan, and Cadet Peter Dyer in the dragon courtyard. Three days after Laurence and Temeraire's arrival and the pair are training on formations, endurance flying, and Temeriare's flying abilities. After one session, Ranking promises to take Laurence to a nearby city to buy stuff. Rankin then takes Laurence on Levitas to the city and Laurence buys Temeraire "a broad pendant of platinum, almost like a breastplate, set with sapphires around a single enormous pearl" that would not have to be adjusted as Temeraire grew. Rankin then flies Laurence back on Levitas and the Winchester is tired when they land at the training grounds. Laurence shows Temeraire the necklace he bought him.
Chapter 7
The next morning, Laurence checks on Temeraire's harness and Levitas before training. Temeraire and Laurence work on dive bombing, flying techniques, formations, and flag and flame signals. Five weeks continues with this and Temeraire gets assigned his human team/"human armor" (they carry things and use their guns and cannon while on Temeraire). After one session, Volly and James swing by and report on a battle at the North Sea against the French and that Parnassian Victoriatus was horribly wounded. Laurence and Temeraire are sent there with a formation (Volly and James, Maximus and Berkley) and attempt to bring Victoriatus to the Loch Laggan covert. It is a success.
The formation gets back to the Loch Laggan covert and Temeraire's shoulder is tended to (Victoriatus scratched him as they were getting her on Temeraire). The servants bring Laurence food and Granby advises Laurence to rest and asks him who will be Laurence's officers (while on Temeraire).
Chapter 8
Temeraire talks to Lily about acid-spitting in the dragon courtyard after Laurence come there (after seeing the cadets). Lily requests to go to the lake as Catherine arrives in the dragon courtyard. The four, Levitas, and Maximus go to the lake and chill out.
When the group gets back, Rankin seizes custody of Levitas and hisses at Laurence. Temeraire says that he is not like Levitas and obeys Laurence because he loves him (as a friend).
Later, Emily Roland tells Laurence that Celeritas has a message for him. Celeritas tells Laurence "Captain, I am obliged to order you not to interfere with Levitas any further." Laurence reluctantly agrees to it. Celeritas also says that Rankin got a Winchester because of his grandfather, and that Celeritas' first rider was Rankin's father.
The training is formations. Laurence and Temeriare are introduced to Grey Copper Dulcia (rider Chenery), Pascal's Blue Nitidus, Yellow Reaper Messoria (rider Sutton), and Yellow Reaper Immortalis (rider Little). Afterwards, Laurence meets with the Captains (riders) and Admirals on how to stop Villeneuve and Nelson, two French captains, from taking over Britain. At night, Laurence reads Temeraire stories about the Yellow Emperor, the first Chinese Celestial who established the Chinese dynasties; Raiden, a Japanese dragon that stopped Kublai Khan from entering Japan; and Xiao Sheng, an Emperor's minister who ate a dragon pearl and metamorphosed into a dragon. The stories are all translated and noted by Sir Edward Howe. Also, lately, Temeraire has been developing a ruff on his head and tendrils on his snout (Laurence is concerned about this).
Laurence tells Celeritas about Temeraire's ruff and Celeritas tells him not to worry about it. Then, Jean-Paul Choiseul and Chanson-de-Guerre Praecursoris arrive at the covert. They have come from Austria on a trip around Europe. Choiseul, Laurence, and Sutton talk about dragon breeds when Temeraire starts talking with Praecursoris in French. Laurence is shocked and Celeritas explains that dragons learn languages as they develop in the egg. Then, training is cannon and bomb training and formations, when it is interrupted when Celeritas brings news that "Villeneuve and his fleet have been caught ... Mortiferous has been sent to Cadiz; Lily's formation must go to the channel at once to take the place of his wing." Lily's formation is sent off to battle.
Part 3
Chapter 9
Laurence and Temeraire are fighting a French Fleur-de-Nuit in formation in battle. The cannon people are disabling it with a flash-cannon (cannon that shoot bursts of light). They disable it and the formation is safe before a Grand Chevalier drops down on them (Messoria and Immortalis are in shock). Suddenly the French dragons attack (including the Pecheur-Couronne) attack the British formation. There is now chaos and the British dragons fight back until Longwing Excidium and his formation come to help.
The British dragons head to the Dover covert and the dragons are exhausted. Temeraire is already asleep when they land. The riders and their crew talk about the battle as they eat.
The next day, Temeriare wakes up later than usual. The riders talk for a while before Laurence sees the cadets and go to the dragon courtyards. Laurence and Temeraire talk for a while.
Later, Laurence finds a man walking towards him, which turns out to be a women, Jane Roland, Emily Roland's mother and Excidium's rider. He talks to her before he goes to bed.
Chapter 10
The next day, Lily's formation flies to a dock and the captains of the ships and the riders meet up.
Laurence heads back to the covert after the day and checks on Temeraire.
Later, the riders meet and discuss battle plans. After the meeting, Laurence finds Jane and talks with her before she kisses him unexpectedly.
Chapter 11
Laurence helps Jane with her things in the covert. It is now October, nearly six months since Temeraire hatched.
One night, after Excidium's formation has been reporting no activity from the French, Choiseul brings Emily out and threatens them to stay in place or Emily's throat will be slit. Laurence charges at Choiseul and rescues Emily.
Laurence puts Choiseul in a basement in the covert, demanding answers. Choiseul reveals to him that a Celestial egg was intended for Bonaparte ffrom the Chinese and needs to kill the dragon's rider to bring him to Bonaparte.
News of Choiseul's betrayal spreads through the covert and Temeraire is worried about being taken from Laurence. Laurence assures him that he won't be taken from Laurence by the Chinese.
In the middle of the night, it is reported that Bonaparte is dead. There is partying in the cities, the streets, and the training grounds.
The riders meet up and determine that Boneparte's "death" is a trick and that Praecursoris is going to some breeding grounds in Newfoundland.
Berkley and Laurence talk and Maximus expresses his ideas. Berkley is mad.
Chapter 12
Laurence keeps Temeraire up all night so he sleeps through Praecursoris's departure. There is still partying all over Britain. Temeraire asks about getting close to the people when a messenger comes and tells Laurence that Granby needs him. Laurence meets with Granby and Granby tells him and the riders about a French fleet approaching the Channel.
The riders prepare for battle when a messenger tells Laurence that "Levitas is dying". Laurence hurries to the dragon courtyard and sees Levitas's head in Rankin's lap. Levitas is soaked in blood from the previous battle against the French and is losing blood quickly. Levitas dies as soon as Laurence gets to the dragon courtyard and heads to Temeraire to battle.
Laurence excuses one of his generals to go to the Chatham covert and begin training a new Winchester dragonet. Laurence snuggles up to Temeraire for the night and the next morning, they and the rest of Lily's formation head into battle. As they get there, Anglewing Obversaria's fleet (including Mortiferous and Excidium) is nearly decimated and Lily's formation had arrived on time. The British fight the French and Temeraire demonstrates his destructive roar ("Divine Wind") and the French are gone.
Epilogue
During a party, Laurence hears from Edward Howe at the dragon courtyard that Temeraire is actually a Chinese Celestial, not a Chinese Imperial.
