15-year-old Lunar Princess Levana Blackburn wakes up from a nightmare about burning herself and she tries practicing some glamour forms in bed before a servant comes in and brings her food. The servant leaves on Levana's orders to get her grey dress. Lunar Princess Channary Blackburn, Levana's older sister, comes into the room and is ready for the funeral. She sneers at Levana and slaps her, Levana's glamour fading away.

At the funeral for Queen Jannali Blackburn and King Marrock Blackburn, Levana meets Lunar Evret Hayle and his wife Lunar Solistice as the rest of Luna gives their condolences to Channary and Levana.

On the third day of mourning, Levana visits the AR-4 shopping district, where Evret and Solstice live. She goes to Solstice's shop where she is looking for an outfit to wear to Channary's coronation. Solstice appears as Levana looks at "...a quilt that hung on one wall, large enough to take up the entire space. .... Earth. And space. Pieced together from shredded fabrics of all different sizes and shaped, the edges left raw where they'd been seamed together. Shimmering forest greens and rough-textured desert browns, shimmering ocean blues and velvet ebony blacks, all stitched together with gold thread. Every segment of the quilt was embroidered with whimsical patterns of ivy and flowers, elaborate spiral curls and glowing starbursts, and though it seemed like it should have been chaotic and excessive, the consistency of the gold thread grounded the piece. Made it beautiful and somehow serene." Levana asks for clothes for the coronation and Solstice finds some for Levana. Levana then asks for clothes that look like the quilt Solstice made.

On the day of the coronation, Levana turns into Solstice and Channary finds her. Channary exposes Levana and Evret walks in, thinking Levana is Solstice. Channary exposes her again and Levana flees to her room.

At the coronation, Channary becomes queen and Levana stays a princess.

Two weeks later, Levana turns 16 and the Lunar Palace is filled for the celebration. At one instance, Levana freaks out when she sees a large flame. Channary mocks Levana and Levana flees the celebration. She then bumps into Evret and he gives her a planet Earth pendant.

During a politics meeting with Lunar Joshua Haddon reporting, Channary is bored and doesn't care. When the subject of the antidote for letumosis from Lunar Shells comes up, Channary assigns Lunar Thaumaturge Sybil Mira to be the head of the project. When the meeting is over, Channary asks Levana to come with her to get dresses fitted. As they go upstairs away from the throne room, a messenger comes and says that Solistice Hayle is having complications giving birth. Channary goes for dresses and Levana goes to see Solistice.

Levana waits in the waiting room as Evret mourns the death of his wife.

Levana finds baby Hayle in a crib and Evret finds her looking at baby Hayle. They watch the baby for a while.

Levana dreams about Evret every night since the incident and thinks about being baby Hayle's step-mother. Evret finds her in her room one day and confronts Levana about her feelings towards him. Then, unintentionally, they start a relationship.

At a party, Levana and Channary talk about Levana's relationship with Evret and Channary exposes Levana. Levana runs away and finds Evret in the hall and they confront each other.

Days after that, Levana and Evret are in an official relationship. One day, Levana asks Evret to marry her and he agrees.

The next day, Levana and Evret marry.

Channary finds out about the marriage and plans to kill it with fire. She also tells Levana that she's pregnant.

Nine months later, Lunar Princess Selene Channary Jannali Blackburn/"Linh Cinder" is born. Luna celebrates.

Channary and Levana are planning a party and Selene is in the room. Channary tells Levana that Lunar Dr. Sage Darnel/"Dr. Dmitri Erland" and his wife have a Shell daughter (Crescent Moon Darnel) and she was sent for letumosis research.

Five months after Channary and Levana's conversation, Channary dies from regolith poisoning and rumors start that Channary had a relationship with a lower-born Lunar. Levana becomes the Lunar queen.

At a politics meeting, Levana plans about getting more land for Luna with her council. Lunar Venerable Annotel says that Joshua "is retiring at the end of this month." Levana choses Lunar Sybil Mira as the new Head Thaumaturge.

It is now one year after Channary died and Levana and Evret fight.

Levana plots on how to kill Selene.

Levana takes Winter to a doctor's appointment and orders the nanny in the Lunar Palace nursery to set the nursery on fire to kill Selene.

Levana is told of the fire and runs to the palace with Winter.

Selene dies and a funeral is held for her. Evret confront Levana about Levana taking Winter to her doctor's appointment.

Levana talks to Lunar Dr. Eliot and tells her about rumors that Princess Selene is still alive. Dr. Eliot says that Selene is confirmed dead and that Lunar Dr. Logan Tanner was also at the scene. She leaves. Sybil is also in the throne room with Levana and both women decide Dr. Eliot is lying. Levana and Sybil plan to question Dr. Tanner, but one day, Logan disappears.

Levana rules her kingdom and watches letumosis start to spread on Earth. Her plan is almost complete except for one thing....

Levana watches Evret play with Winter and Lunar Jacin Clay on the shore of Artemisia Lake outside The Lunar Palace. Evret then sees Levana and tells her that she works to much and Levana mentions that "There's a new trade contact with TX-7 I need to review." Infuriated with her, Evret screams that Levana is not his real wife and Levana runs to her room. She sobs and plans to seize Earth.

Winter is told a bedtime story before going to bed. Evret and Levana fight again before they sleep together. Levana thinks of the incident that scarred her.

When Channary and Levana were kids, Channary played around with Levana, toying with her. One day, Channary cuts off Levana's hair and a fight starts. Then, Channary forces Levana to throw herself into a fire.

Levana rips off a part of the bed drapes in her room and uses it as a makeshift veil for herself. She goes to Channary's former bedroom and looks in the mirror and sees her scars: "Her left eye was permanently sealed shut, and the scarred tissue on that side of her face was formed of ridges and grooves. Half of her face was paralyzed from the incident, and great chunks of hair would never grow back. The scars continued down her neck and shoulder, half of her chest and upper ribs, all the way down to her hand." Horrified at herself, Levana destroys the mirror with Channary's things and guards appear. She orders the guards to destroy the mirrors.

Levana is showed the new "mirror" (silver screen that doesn't show any reflections) and likes it. On one of the screens is Emperor Rikan of the Eastern Commonwealth speaking out about letumosis after his wife died. Little Prince Kaito is standing next to him. Luna is improving. Levana plans a marriage between Winter and Kaito, but Winter has no royal blood. Levana decides to marry Kaito.

While sleeping with Evret, assassins come into The Lunar Palace and kill guards. Evret and Levana wake and Evret protects Levana, only to be killed by Luna Joshua Haddon. Levana then murders Joshua Haddon and pretends to mourn over Evret. Winter then stumbles from her room to find her father dead. Her mourning, however, is real.

Part One/"Book 1"

Chapter 1

A trial for a Lunar man having a Shell son is held and Princess Winter Hayle is uncomfortable, much to Queen Levana's glee. It is declared by Lunar Head Thaumaturge Aimery Park. The man is found guilty and is killed. Then, Lunar Jacin Clay is about to be put on trial.

Chapter 2

Jacin is put on trial for failing to capture Linh Cinder and her band, and failing to protect Sybil Mira. Jacin mentions, in his defense, he was really close to getting Cinder and sent a message to Sybil about Cinder planning to capture Emperor Kaito. Levana assigns Jacin "thirty self-inflicted lashings to be held on the central dais, followed by forty hours of penance." Levana tells Winter that if she tries to feed Jacin, his tongue will be cut out.

Chapter 3

The next day, Winter doesn't go to Jacin's lashing and instead follows her routine of eating breakfast, getting cleaned up, and Lunar powers training. At the end of the day, she gets a hot drink before bed. Winter plans to get to Jacin. She fake screams that an intruder was in her room and the guards believe it, allowing her to escape. Winter goes into Artemisia and finds Jacin tied to a metal post with one arm while a whip is in his other hand (because of the punishment). Winter and Jacin talk about the punishment, Jacin being on Luna, and what Jacin saw on Earth before a guard comes and takes Winter back to The Lunar Palace.
