Chapter 35
Songs to listen to while reading:
Secrets - OneRepublic
"Are you going to tell me what you have planned today or not?" I complain, my head resting in my hand while my elbow rests on the arm rest.
"Uhm..." Harry says sarcastically, acting like he's deeply thinking about the answer he is going to give me. "No."
Harry's right hand is casually wrapped around the steering wheel, his other hand is holding my thigh. He told me to get dressed up this morning because he was taking me out for a surprise. But he won't tell me anything so I really don't know what to expect.
"Please tell me." I beg, turning my body in my seat to face him, hoping he crumbles under my stare.
"It's a surprise, Lexi. A surprise means that I will not tell you what it is until we get there." He explains in a teasing tone. "Just need to stop off at the warehouse quickly, forget my phone there earlier."
We reach a small car parking lot, Harry driving straight into one of the spaces and putting the car into park. I can see why they call it a warehouse because that is exactly how it looks from the outside. "No one else is here, you can come inside with me if you want?" Harry suggests. Well, no one else is there, there's no harm in going for a look.
I give a small nod, opening the car door and climbing out. I follow behind Harry as he uses his key to unlock the door for the warehouse. He lets me walk in first before closing the door behind us. "My phone is upstairs." Harry says, walking in front of me and jogging up the stairs two at a time. My short ass legs do not allow me to do such things so I fall behind him.
"What are you doing here?" My head snaps to Harry who is standing at the entrance of a room a few meters away from where I am. Who is he talking to?
"I own this building, what the fuck do you mean? I can be here if I want to be Harry." I know that voice. King.
"I just meant... I just didn't think anyone was here because there were no cars in the car park." Harry explains, playing with his rings. I'm still standing at the top of the stairs, not knowing whether to walk to Harry or leave.
I hear the sound of a chair click, footsteps following. Harry scratches the back of his head, turning his head towards me subtly, widening his eyes in indication that I must leave. I turn around and start walking down the stairs and with my luck, I end up stepping on one that creaks loudly.
"Who is with you?" King asks, still inside the room where I can't see him.
Harry lets out a sigh, knowing we can't get out of this. "It's Alexa."
I hear King's footsteps knock along the wood floor until he is standing next to Harry in the door frame. "Hi babe, you okay?" King asks me, looking down at my figure slowly while he waits for me to answer.
The brown dress with white flowers that I put on for Harry, making me feel pretty originally, now making my skin feel uncomfortable under King's view.
Harry is wearing a black button up long-sleeved shirt, the first few buttons he has left open, with some black trousers with some white leaf details. He is also wearing some black boots which are a change from his brown Chelsea boots.
"Yeah." I give a short reply, hoping he doesn't continue trying to make conversation.
"And where are we going, all dressed up like this?" King asks Harry, taking in Harry's outfit knowing that it's not what he would normally wear.
"Just going to the club for a few drinks, thought I would bring Alexa along with me so she's not stuck in the house all the time." Harry lies, probably saying the first thing that comes to his mind.
"Drinking at one in the afternoon?" King asks Harry but now looking at me again. I wish he would stop staring at me like how he does.
"It's five o'clock somewhere. Just came to get my phone, left it here earlier." Harry changes the subject, obviously wanting to leave.
King pulls out Harry's phone from his pocket, holding it out for Harry to take. When Harry goes to take it from him, King holds on to it staring at Harry, "Have fun."
It sounded more like a warning with the way he said the two words, he was warning Harry.
*PLAY SONG NOW PLEASE*
"We're here."
I look around at Harry announcing our arrival, all I can see is a large patch of grass and a few trees creating areas of shade. It looks like a small park in the middle of nowhere.
"We are?" I ask, confused.
"Yeah, come on. Let's go." He says, a grin glued to his face. He's up to something and I don't know whether to be excited or scared.
We climb out of the car, Harry walks to the front of the car, waiting for me to join him. "Come on Lexi." He holds his hand out for me to take.
"Oh, so it's back to Lexi now that we aren't around King?" I joke, sliding my hand into his.
He starts guiding up towards the back of the field, he knows where he is going. "He can't know about us Lexi, he'll take you away." We've had this conversation before, Harry telling me about how we can't show what we are actually like together in front of King.
"Okay, close your eyes." Harry states.
"What?"
"Just close your eyes!" He says through laughing.
"Fine!" I say dramatically, throwing my hand to cover my eyes. "If you hadn't already, I would ask if you're going to kidnap me." I tease. A small pinch from Harry to my ribs causes me to squeal from the sting.
He starts guiding my body to walk backwards, my steps cautious so I don't fall over. "Okay, on the count of three, open your eyes."
I decide to follow his instructions, counting down from three at a steady pace, then removing my hand so that I can now see.
Oh my god.
A picnic. He has set up a picnic for us.
A large red and white chequered blanket is draped along the grass, a bottle of Rosé, an arrayment of fruit in bowls, chocolate covered strawberries and some crackers.
"Did you do this?" I ask, still shocked at what I'm seeing.
"Well, not entirely. It was my idea but I asked Niall and Cara to set it up so I could surprise you." Harry gives a thumbs up to someone behind me, I turn around to see who he is talking to. That's when I see the car that is parked next to Harry's, Niall and Cara sitting in the front seats. They give us both a thumbs up back before Niall reverses and drives away. "Is it okay?" He's a confident person Harry but he always turns unsure of himself when he does something out of his comfort zone.
"It's perfect Harry, thank you." I wrap my arms around his shoulders, hugging him with my neck buried in his neck. His hair always smells musky and it drives me wild. His arms wrap around my waist, holding me tight against him.
"Anything for you." He whispers.
"You can't top the fort you made in the library though, that's still at number one." I joke with him, pulling away from the hug and sitting down with my legs crossed on the blanket. Harry sits next to me, his legs straight out in front of him with his ankles crossed and his palms holding his body up from behind him.
"I'm not good with stuff like this. Never done it before so I'm not really sure what to do." Harry confesses. He sits up, grabbing the bowl of grapes.
"You've never had a girlfriend?"
"Nope." He pops the 'p' while saying the word. I watch the way his lips wrap around the grape before he bites into it. He makes anything look attractive. "Lived in Cheshire until I moved to London when I turned sixteen. That's when I met the boys." I can't help but be mesmerised by the way he speaks, the way his lips move to pronounce the words.
"Why did you move to London?" I ask him, playing with the end of my dress.
"Just felt like it. Tell me what your life was like in New York." He's good at diverting the conversation, I wonder what he is trying to hide.
"Not that much to tell. Worked at a small Café, boss was a bitch. Lived next door to my best friend Caleb. I didn't have a good relationship with my parents after the David situation..." I ramble. Only after, realising I'm talking in past terms. "So you just randomly wanted to move to London?"
"Basically... why did you come to London?" Harry diverts, almost at the end of his supply of grapes. What was the real reason for his move to London?
"Needed a break, was going to travel for a while." We are now knee deep in a conversation that we both try our best to avoid. We don't talk about what's going to happen in the future or whether he would ever let me go. I don't push the conversation because I don't know how I would feel about what the answer would be, either way.
I am so content right now, I'm not going to ruin it by asking questions that will ruin that. One day, just not today.
Harry picks up the bowl of chocolate covered strawberries, picking one out of the bunch and leaning over to me, indicating that he wants me to eat it. My stomach drops in panic. "I'm not hungry." I lie, shaking my head. I've been eating a lot more than normal lately and it's giving me anxiety.
"You haven't eaten yet today, Lexi."
"I'll have some crackers." I respond, picking up the packet of crackers. This seems to please Harry enough to not force the subject any more. He puts the bowl of chocolate covered strawberries in front of him, biting into one, throwing the leaves left over from the strawberry onto the grass.
"Do you like animals?" Harry asks me, now leaning over to pick the bottle of Rosé up.
"Definitely! Dogs have a special place in my heart, allergic to cats though."
Harry starts pouring the alcohol into two glasses, "Cats are so much better than dogs."
"Excuse me! They are not!" I punch him lightly in the shoulder, causing him to pour some of the Rosé onto my dress.
We both freeze, mouths gaping open as we watch the liquid spreading, darkening the material in its path. Our eyes meet for a second until I grab the bottle of Rosé from him, pushing his shoulder hard enough for him to fall onto his back. I climb onto his lap, straddling his waist. "I love when you sit on me like this and I love when you wear dresses." Harry says before biting his lip, running his hands up my thighs, traveling just under my dress. His mood turning instantly from the way I am sat on him.
"Why do you like when I wear dresses?"
"Easy access." He replies, his hands traveling further up my dress. I flick his shoulder, scolding him but it only makes him laugh. "I'm joking. You're always confident when you wear dresses." I didn't even realise this was the case.
I lean forward, our lips brushing together but not yet meeting. "Is that so?" I whisper against his lips. Harry moves his hands to hold my hair out of my face, moving my head so that our lips crash together. I take his moment of distraction, plugging the bottle of Rosé with my thumb and then shaking it violently behind my back. It only takes a second before the fizzy alcohol spurts into the air and lands all over Harry. He breaks the kiss as soon as he feels the liquid dampening his shirt and hair, still holding my face at a distance now as he looks from one eye to the other.
"Alexandria, tell me you did not just do that..."
"Harold, two can play at the distracting game..." I brag, referring to the lazer tag situation. Sucking my lips into my mouth to hide my victory smile as I take in his shirt stuck to his body from all the alcohol soaking into his clothes.
Harry's tongue runs along the inside of his cheek, turning into a devilish smirk. "You're in trouble now baby."
