Issue #16
Somewhere in Russia...
You took a deep breath as you sat on the leather seat. You looked around the room you were sitting in and sighed. You were on your own. Why? Because Nikki reasoned that the two of you could divide and conqueror on the last three demons. You were on your way to a station stop where a werewolf was hiding out. Supposedly. Whatever. It didn't matter in the end. This was just a scouting mission anyway. Make sure he's there and send word to Nikki and Mur-G'nn.
Y/N: Easy enough.
You leaned back in your seat and sighed as the world outside passed you by. You had only been on a train once in your life. This was just an odd thing for you. You closed your eyes and relaxed a bit.
--------
The Day Before...
Y/N: So, you're heading back to Crestkill?
Nadia nodded as she finished packing her bag. As fun as it was to have her around, she had decided it was best to head back to America. You understood why. With Kamala's Law still in full effect, she would easily be outed for helping you. The world still things Leviathan was in hiding so having her around would mess some things up.
Nadia: C.R.A.D.L.E has been cracking down hard on some of us. I was lucky to even get here without them breathing down my neck.
Y/N: That sucks. I'm sorry.
Nadia looked at you confused.
Nadia: Why are you sorry?
You just shrugged.
Y/N: Feels like I need to apologize for something.
Nadia stopped packing and moved to sit on the bed next to you. She gently grabbed your hand and made you look at her.
Nadia: None of this is your fault. You have to stop blaming yourself for things that are out of your control.
You just looked at her before you smiled. You leaned forward and kissed her cheek before standing up.
Y/N: Come on. I'll go with you to the airport.
Nadia smiled.
Nadia: So, a werewolf?
You nodded as you smiled.
Y/N: Yep. Nikki said there would be a guy waiting there for me. Professor Onchukov.
----------
Her words rang true. None of this was your fault and yet, you couldn't help but take all the responsibility. You were the leader now. This was your role.
???: <Excuse me.>
*Translated from Russian
You opened your eyes and looked at the door. A man wearing a trench coat and a fedora was standing there. Around his neck was a cross necklace.
???: <Would you mind if I...>
You shook your head and allowed the man to enter the train compartment with you. He sat across from your and set his case down in the empty space next to him. You turned your gaze to the window. Right now you were wearing your long coat and bandanna but left the goggles in your pocket and made sure your gun was hidden.
Man: <Excuse me.>
You turned back to the man.
Man: <You seem so young to be traveling alone. Are you on a trip for business or for pleasure?>
You looked at him for a moment before you looked at his case. You then looked back at the man as he awaited your answer.
Y/N: <Obligation. Family matters.>
Man: <I see. Where is your stop, if you don't mind me asking?>
You pulled out the piece of paper from your pocket and handed it to the man. The man took it and read over the name.
Man: <Goloski Station? Well, I can't say I've heard of too many people going there.>
You just nodded as you looked out the window.
Y/N: <Like I said. Family matters.>
You watched the land go by as you became engrossed in your thoughts again.
Man: <You seem like you have a great burden.>
You snapped out of your thoughts and turned back to the man.
Y/N: <Pardon?>
Man: <A man so young should not have such responsibilities that it distracts him from a nice trip.>
You raised a brow. Who was this dude? Why did he care about your responsibilities and burdens?
Man: <Tell me something. You have seen many things, no? What have you seen that has bothered you this much?>
Ghost, vampires, floating heads, monsters, demons, war, death and destruction all around.
Y/N: <Someone I care deeply for was hurt. Put into a hospital. I couldn't save her.>
Man: <A lover?>
You shook your head.
Y/N: <One of my closest friends. A leader among others. A hero. Now she is in the hospital with no signs of waking up.>
The man nodded before he l9oked at his case. He pulled it on his lap and unlocked it as you watched out of the corner of your eye. He lifted up the lid and pulled out a silver canister. He rolled it around in his hand before he held it out toward you.
Man: <Here. You seem like you need it more than I do.>
You looked at it for a moment before you took it. You looked it over and saw that it had a black marking on it. TX. What the hell was TX?
Y/N: <What is this?>
The man just smiled.
Man: <You will know when the time is right. For now, we have reached your stop.>
You looked out the window and saw that he was right. The stop was here. You looked at the man before you grabbed your bag. The train came to a halt and you stood up to leave.
Man: The Holy Mother protects you, my son.
You looked at the man before you nodded and stepped out of the compartment.
Y/N: Thanks.
---------
On The Night Viv Came Back and Scott Left....
Kamala: Then we'll share that responsibility. I am the leader after all.
You sniffled a laugh as she rested her head against yours.
Kamala: You said it first. We have each other's backs.
Y/N: Yeah. Always.
You both separated and you looked at the time. It wasn't too late and you didn't have a curfew so you weren't really concerned.
Y/N: Should I be going?
Kamala shook her head.
Kamala: It's been a while since I've star gaze with someone. You can stay if you want. I can sneak up some snacks.
You smiled.
Y/N: Sounds good. For now, we can just hang here. Enjoy the silence. I can help you sneak some stuff up here later.
Kamala gave you an odd look.
Y/N: You pick up some things when you've been doing this thing solo.
Kamala: I'll take your word for it.
The two of you returned you gazes back up to the stars. The entire time, you held each other's hands.
Things were always so uncertain for you. The future, the past, everything. But, at this moment, you were at ease. You were content. You were, happy.
Kamala: This is nice. My dad would totally blow up if he knew I was up here with a boy.
You laughed a bit.
Y/N: Yeah. My sister would never let me live it down.
You and Kamala smiled as you looked at the stars. You found your gaze shifting over to the girl next to you. Kamala Kahn. Ms. Marvel. The girl who started it all. Without her, there was no Champions. With no Champions, you would still be doing this all alone.
She was brave. Smart. She was ambitious and she was a leader. She was your friend. She loved the Champions and she was sincere about being a hero. She was inspiring.
She turned to say something but instead found you looking at her with a uncertain face. She slowly closed her mouth and looked at you. In the light of the moon and the stars, the two of you looked at each other and thought about how much you meant to each other.
Kamala: Y/N?
Y/N: Yeah?
Kamala shifted so that she was sitting right next to you.
Kamala: You and Nadia...are the two of you...
Y/N: We went on a date. That's it though.
Kamala: You both seem like a good fit.
You smiled a bit.
Y/N: Yeah. She's something else. Maybe one day.
You looked at your hands as you began to think. You and Nadia. That was something.
Kamala: Ok. Then I can do this.
You turned to ask her what she was talking about but found that you couldn't. You felt a soft and warm sensation on your lips before you realized that she was kissing you. It took you a brief moment, but you ended up closing your eyes and leaning back into it.
Slowly, the two of you parted and looked at each other in the eyes.
Kamala: Just wanted to do that. Just, once.
Y/N: I...
Kamala: And now we'll never talk about this ever again. For the sake of the team.
You looked at her before you slowly nodded.
Y/N: Yeah. For the team.
Kamala looked at you before she nudged you.
Kamala: You should take your shot with Nadia. She really likes you, you know?
You just laughed to yourself.
Y/N: Yeah. I figured.
----------
You walked up toward a small wooden shack that had the name, "Goloski" on it. Due to the wear and tear from the weather, it looked like it wasn't even habitable anymore. You walked a bit more before you noticed a man sitting there.
Y/N: Professor Onchukov?
The man was bold but had a beard the had began to turn white near the bottom of his chin. He wore a green army style coat and matching trousers. On his lap was a rifle of somekind and beside him was a bag that was tied shut.
Man: You were a fool to come here.
You just sighed.
Y/N: So I'm guessing you aren't Professor Onchukov.
The man lifted up his gun so that it was pointing up.
Man: No, but I do have his head here in this bag.
You looked at the bag and saw that it was stained red on the bottom.
Y/N: That's gonna be a problem.
The man set his rifle down and lifted up the bag.
Man: You want to see it?
He opened the bag and pulled out a very large wolf head. Blood dripped from the bottom and it was definitely dead.
Man: It's been an hour. He should look human again by now. Oh well. Sometimes it's different.
The man turned the head so that it was looking at him while you watched.
Man: Did you know him?
Y/N: No. He worked for my father, a while back. I actually came here to kill him but....guess you beat me to it.
Man: Must have been after he sold his soul to the devil so he could change into a wolf.
Y/N: So, that's how this works?
The man tucked the wolf head back into the bag as he sighed.
Man: You are so young. He would have wanted to kill you immediately.
You just nodded.
Y/N: Seems like every demon that worked for my father wants me dead. Any particular reason why that you can think of?
The man gave it some thought as he set the rifle back on his lap.
Man: A lot of his sort looking to kill you these days. Did you really shoot out Baba Yaga's eye?
You gave the man a questioning look. How did he know about that? Well, if he hunts monsters and demons, surely he would know of others. Others talked.
Y/N: I did. Yeah...a few days ago.
Man: Too soon for you to be hunting again. A whole lot of bad people looking to take your head, trade it to Baba Yaga for her favors. Me, I think she's gone. Bot dead, but you hurt her pretty bad.
He then pointed at you.
Y/N: You should have killed her.
You just sighed as you looked around at the field surrounding the cabin. You then turned back to the man.
Y/N: Speaking of heads, what are you gonna do with that one?
Man: You want it? You'd have to pay. I know a man who will pay good money for it.
You sat on the bench next to him.
Y/N: So that's what you do? You sell heads?
Man: I'm a hunter. Like my father was. Do you also fall into your father's business?
You shook your head as he pulled out a pack of cigarettes. He offered you one which you refused.
Y/N: My father is, not a normal man. I stray far from his path. One of my greatest fears is to actually fall into his footsteps.
The man lit his cigarette with his match as you sat there.
Man: A boy fearing to become his father. I understand that very well. My father, he signed away his soul long ago. It damned him, me, my mother, and my sister. Now, I hunt the very monsters that he once was.
You leaned your back against the wooden wall and turned to him.
Y/N: You think I can still accept that cigarette?
The man chuckled as he handed you one and stood up.
Man: I have something else inside. One moment.
-----------
After Your Return From The Dead...
You stood on the edge of the roof of your apartment building as you and the others snuck away from everyone to have a private celebration. Gib, Hailey, and Hyde had decided to join you and the other Champions.
Sam: To Y/N! The Undying Leviathan!
Everyone cheered as you all lifted your drinks in the air as a toast. You laughed at the title as Gib threw an arm around you.
Gib: No one can keep this guy down. He's the most stubborn person I know!
Nadia: He really is.
You smiled before your eyes fell on Kamala. She looked up and noticed you looking at her. She lifted up her bottle of soda with a wink and you returned the gesture. You took a drink of your soda before you looked over at the sunset.
These moments made it all worth it.
----------
Y/N: And that's my story.
Man: That's quite a story for someone so young.
Y/N: Well, that was all right.
Man: Yes. Yes it was.
You took a drag from your cigarette as the glass bottle sat empty next to you.
Y/N: I'm guessing we've got time before that train comes if you want to tell me your life story.
The man just smiled.
Man: There's no story. I'm just an old man who hunts werewolves for money.
You nodded. It was about an hour later when the train came. You gathered your items and said your goodbye. You stopped long enough to look at the man one last time before your boarded the train.
---------
Y/N: And that's my report. Professor Onchukov is dead.
Nikki: I see. Well, I don't have all of Dr. Hurwood's journals on Professor Onchukov but...I've read through the ones I could find.
You looked out the window as the train passed by the plains and the trees. You had called Nikki on the phone to tell him what had happened.
Y/N: Anything interesting?
Nikki: They mentioned some man named Yad Tovich.
Y/N: Odd name.
Nikki: There's a story about an Igor Tovich. Not a well known story, maybe mid seventeenth century. He was mauled by a wolf. He survived, but was convinced that he was cursed, that he would eventually become a wolf himself. So to escape that curse he sold the souls of his wife and children to the devil.
Y/N: But, how does our Father come into play?
Nikki: He had witnessed the whole thing. No sooner after Ivan signed the Devil's book, a huge wolf burst into his cabin and swallowed up his wife and daughter. His son managed to escape but so great was the boy's fear of dying and burning in Hell...
Y/N: He refused to die.
Nikki: Exactly. Our father took in Ivan and helped cover up the horrible deed. The man had changed his name, to Professor Onchukov.
You slowly lifted up your head as everything began to click. The man you had met at the station, the wolf, everything.
Y/N: Right. I guess that leave two more demons.
Nikki: One. We disposed of our demon. There is only one left.
You sat up in your seat.
Y/N: Where do I need to go?
Nikki: Romania.

Professor Onchukov: Eliminated
