Issue #15

Paris, France...

Y/N: This is, just not ok.

You side stepped to avoid hitting a spirit that had a sword stabbed through his head as you tried to make your way down the street. You had kinda gotten better at telling gjost from people, but it didn't mean you looked like a crazy person trying to avoid everyone.

Nikki: Just focus on the mission. Using Dr. Hurwood's journal, it seems that the person you're looking for is actually a vampire.

You stopped dead in your tracks. Slowly, you raised a hand to your com.

Y/N: A, what?

Nikki: Vampire. Maybe I should just read the passage to you.

Y/N: Please do.

Nikki: No city in Europe is home to a more dreadful collection of tormented souls, phantoms, and specters. The worst of these being a former verger of St. Peter's church, now better known as the Vampire of Paris.

Y/N: Catchy name.

You ducked under a tall man who was missing a piece of his head.

Nikki: This particular verger was a gambler who had the misfortune to live during the time of the plague. Our father was actually the cause of that.

Y/N: Go figure.

Nikki: Anyways, uh, had the misfortune to live during the plague so there came a day when he could find no living men to play against him. And so great was his passion for cards that, out of desperation, he struck up a game with the dead.

You ducked into an alleyway and looked around at the city walls. You couldn't even begin to guess how someone would play a game of cards with dead people.

Y/N: So he played a game of cards and, what? Sold his soul?

Nikki: No. For that offense he was cursed, and to this day, each night, he wanders the city, seeking victims.

Y/N: So, he's not a ghost. He's a vampire. Why the hell did you say he was a ghost?

Nikki: I didn't read the entire journal. I saw ghost and...

Y/N: You know, hunting demons is kinda serious. Maybe you should get the whole story before I get killed. Vampires and ghosts are two completely different things.

Nikki: I'm aware.

You stopped walking and looked around. Your gun was holstered under your coat and your sleeves were still rolled up to your elbows. You didn't exactly blend in with the public but the foot traffic seemed to have slowed down a bit.

Nikki: It's said that if he can be beaten at his game, his soul will be set free. But any who plays against him...and loses...

Y/N: I think I get it. So, I just have to play some cards? Seems easy enough.

Nikki: He's had years, decades, centuries to master the craft. When was the last time you played cards?

You gave it some thought.

Y/N: My science teacher taught me and Gib how to play poker once.

You heard Nikki sigh.

Nikki: Maybe you should go confront him.

Y/N: I got this. Is there a place somewhere in that journal?

Nikki was silent for a moment. Finally, he responded.

Nikki: Yeah. There's something here. A place the Doctor would meet him.

You smirked as you pulled up your mask.

Y/N: Tell me where.
---------
Y/N: This was not the place I was thinking.

You looked around the old Gothic style building with your gun out. You walked through the halls as slowly and quietly as possible. Everything seemed so run down and, abandoned. If you were being completely honest, it looked like a crackhouse.

To make matters worse, your com didn't work in here. Thankfully you had that spell from Mur-G'nn to protect you from any possible danger. Regardless, you were ready to play a round of cards with a vampire.

How did your life get to this point?

You started to near a door where you saw faint traces of smoke. You peeked in and found that the smoke was coming from the remains of candles that were being burnt. The room was clean, kept maintained unlike the rest of the building. It looked like a bed room of some kind though it was large.

A dark aura seemed to spread through the room as an errie silence filled your ears. Looking around, you spotted a ivory coffin resting in the corner of the room. Not to far from it, a table with four chairs and a love seat. Three bodies laid there, all drained of color and life. Cards littered the table and the floor.

Listening closer, you heard what appeared to be slurping. Your eyes fell upon the various glasses that only had a small amount on wine inside of it. Looks like someone had a good night. You stepped into the room and felt the immediate chill that was absent from the hall.

You looked around before you spotted what you were looking for. Hanging onto a glass and drinking what was left in it, was a bat. You took another step but failed to notice the loose board. The creak from the wood caught the attention of the bat who looked up at you. It wasn't just him either. You heard several squeaks above you causing you to look up. The entire roof, which you had presumed to be dark due to the lack of light, was suddenly a swarm of bats.

Y/N: Aw, crap.

The bats all screeched and flew down to surround you as you tried to swat then away. Their cries and screeches filled your ears as you blindly fired off two rounds. You decided it was best to holster it and find something else to help you. You began to dig through your pockets as the bats cut and bit you.

Y/N: Where is it?

You finally felt it. You grabbed hold of it and pulled it out of the pouch.

Y/N: Ahh!

You looked at the device in your hands and smiled. It was a black bomb that was crafted by you a few months ago for situations like this. You pulled the tab and smirked.
---------
Two Months Ago...

Alexis: So, why are you making a bomb?

Alexis had decided to spend lunch with you in your lab since Nadia had taken Taina with her for a snack run.

Y/N: Big guys who need an extra ass kicking.

Alexis: Ok. So, uh, what is it?

You held up the black device with a white 40 painted on it.

Y/N: Well, this is the Vulcan 40. It's good. It'll stop a pile of elephants.

You set the device down and picked up another one. This one had a white 50.

Y/N: This is the Vulcan 50. This'll take off the top of a god damn mountain. I hesitated even making this thing. This one isn't for people or buildings.

Alexis: It would be bad if you mixed those up, huh?

Y/N: Absolutely.
---------
Present Day...

Your eyes grew wide when you spotted the white numbers on the device as you threw it.

Y/N: Son of a...

You were suddenly hoping that your calculations were wrong.
--------
On the Other Side of Paris...

Nadia and Mur-G'nn were admiring a dress through a window when a loud sound suddenly rang through the air. The two girls turned to find the source, only to find a large cloud of smoke appear from the other side of the city.

Nadia: Was that a bomb?

Mur-G'nn: I am unsure.

Nadia's phone suddenly began to ring. She pulled it out and answered it.

Nadia: Hello?

Nikki: Y/N may be in trouble.

Nadia: Was that him?!

Nikki: Perhaps.
-------
Back With You...

Y/N: Thank god for magic.

You coughed a bit as you waved away the smoke that now filled the area. Most of your clothing was now destroyed beyond repair as well as some of your newer equipment. Your gun was safe somehow as was your goggles and mask. You walked through the rubble of the building as some car alarms rang down the street. So, minor miscalculation. 50 destroyed the entire building.

The magic guard Mur-G'nn placed on you protected you from the blast and everything that came with it. You stretched a bit as you pulled away the last bit of your coat. Cards flew all around you and some stuck onto your skin. One landed on your shoulder and you pulled it off before looking at it. A black Ace.

Y/N: Well, there's no way that guy could've survived that. Right?

You looked back and saw a silhouette of a man. The smoke slowly began to clear and you saw him. A man dressed in black and eyes as wide as golf balls. His fangs, sharp.

Y/N: Aw, c'mon! How the hell did you..urk!

The man grabbed your throat and hissed as he tackled you to the ground. You kicked his gut as you hit the ground and swung at his jaw. The vampire screamed into your face and lifted you up before he took off to the sky.

Y/N: Ahhhhh! Hey!

The vampire held onto you as he flew through the buildings and slammed you into the rooftops as you passed. Statues became weapons as the protection spell grew weaker. Across the city, your allies rushed into action to help you.

Y/N: STOP!

SLAM

Y/N: DOING!

SLAM

Y/N: THAT!

SLAM

You slammed your head against the roof of a tall building before you saw a statue getting closer. A man on a horse holding a flag. You immediately began to frantically beat on the vampire with your Vibranium arm.

Y/N: Die! Die!

The vampire continued to hiss as you grabbed his wrist and turned yourself so that he slammed into the statue instead of you. The flag piece broke off as the two of you exchanged blows. You pushed him down onto the roof top before you landed on a bridge. The extra oof made you bounce off of it and into the street below.

The vampire grabbed your mask and turned you over so that you slammed against the asphalt. The vampire then used his wings to fly you right through a glass window pain. Strings wrapped around your arms and neck as wooden puppets slammed against your skin. You gun fell from its holster as you fell to the ground.

You pushed yourself up and stumbled a bit as you tried to gather yourself from the beating. You lifted your arm and look at the devil puppet dangling there.

Y/N: Uh! Jeez! What tha....

Another puppet dropped near you causing your to scream. More began to dangle around you as you swiped away the wooden puppets. Frantically, you swiped and swung at the strings and wood.

Y/N: GET AWAY FROM ME!

You grabbed one of the puppets and threw it to the ground which caused it to shatter on the floor. Suddenly, claws stabbed into your shoulder as the vampire pulled you back out into the streets. You hit the ground, glass cutting into your skin, before you stood back up and looked at the vampire as you felt nothing but anger.

Your breathing got more fantic as you began to step closer to the beast. Anger, frustration, doubt, despair, it was all you felt. All logic left your mind as you picked up a stray piece of glass. You limped a bit before the vampire lunged at you. You didn't even hesitate before you grabbed his collar and slammed him to the ground.

You slammed a knee on his chest before you lifted the glass shard high before plunging it into the beast's neck. You twisted it before you dragged it across his skin. Blood spilled from the wound before you reached down and grabbed a hold of one of his wings. You stood up and placed a foot onto his side before you pulled with all your strength. A horrible tearing echoed through the silent street as you tore off his wing.

Then, you reached down and grabbed a hold of his head. Anger. Pure, raging anger. Hatred. Hatred for the evil in this world. Humanity. Hatred against humanity. Uncontrollable anger and hatred filled your mind as you stared into the vampire's eyes. He stared back at you as he saw the flash of yellow. His eyes grew wide. He had seen those eyes before. In a man he once knew. A monster that was far worse than himself.

Why? Why do humans make the same mistake over and over and over again?! Why do they never learn?! You fight for them! You save them! What do you get?! Hatred! Why? Why do they have a say in what you do?! Why do they make laws for people who have no say?! Why was Kamala hurt by men who wanted to continue their corruption?! Why did Viv have to sacrifice herself because people never learned?!

Your hands gripped his head tighter as you began to pull. Your eye was pure yellow. A haunting, inhuman yellow. Blood rushed to your head as the blood poured even more from the wound as your teeth gritted even more and you began to see red. For the first time in years, you allowed your anger to take hold. Pure, blinding anger.

Y/N: AHHHHH!

In one swift motion, you tore the vampire's head clean off. Unknown to you, your allies had showed up at that moment. You threw it away as you pulled the remaining puppets off of you.

Y/N: GET OFF!

From the sleeve of one puppet, cards flew out. You slowly reached up and caught five of them as your eyes went wide and your smile grew. You watched as the headless beast stumbled around and smoke began to surround his body. His physical form began to decay and crack and break as you laughed.

Y/N: COME BACK! I STILL WANT TO PLAY!

You followed the beast as his body fell. Green smoke appeared as what remained turned into a bat.

Y/N: OH, YOU SLIPPERY BASTARD! COME HERE!

You watched as the bat began to fly up into the sky. From its wings, five cards fell to the earth below. You watched as they landed.

A straight.

Your smile grew as you showed your own cards.

Y/N: HA! FULL HOUSE DUMBASS!

The bat flew around frantically as the sun began to rise over the city of Paris. The bells rang, a rooster cried, and the sun hit the vampire. You had beat him at his game. You had won. The bat flew right into a stone cross before he burnt into nothing but ash. You began to laugh before you dropped to your knees. Your body began to feel lighter and your eye turned back to normal.

Y/N: I won. Take....that....

You fell over as darkness took a hold.
-------------
Your eyes shot open as you sat up from the bed. Your head was throbing in pain. You reached up and held your head before looking around the room.

Y/N: When did I...

Nadia: Y/N?

You looked over and found Nadia sitting in one of the chairs in the corner. She stood up and rushed over to you as you tried to move despite the soreness.

Y/N: What happened?

Nadia looked you over and you realized you had some bandages wrapped around your shoulder.

Nadia: We found you in some rundown shop. We, we saw you beat the vampire.

You shook your head. Rundown shop? It looked brand-new. Those puppets looked like they were just made.

Y/N: No. What?

Nadia: You won in a game of cards against him. He burnt right then and there.

That, wasn't right. You lost it. You tore off his wing and his head. You had your first episode in years.

Nadia: Nikki said that you blew up an entire building though.

That was true.

Y/N: Yeah. By accident.

Nadia: How do you accidentally blow up an entire building?

Y/N: Because I'm a idiot. So, the vampire is dead?

Nadia nodded. Well, looks like you're good to go then. No one saw your freak out and the vampire was beaten. Three down, three more to go.

Y/N: Nice. Maybe, I'll just sleep today. For this week. Maybe the month. The year possibly.

You laid back down and sighed while Nadia laughed. You gently held her hand and smiled.

Nadia: Would you like for me to join you?

Y/N: Always.

Nadia smiled as she slid off her jacket before she laid next to you. You held her closely as you sighed. Slowly, you closed your eyes.

Nadia, however, couldn't sleep. She saw everything. She saw the evil in your eye and the things you did. She saw it all. She had no idea what it was or who you had become. It was something she had never seen before.

And it scared her.
