Chapter 9

A week had gone by since I heard from Levi. Alice had told me she had seen him a couple of times at the bakery. They were two weeks away from the grand opening. Every time I'd ask about Levi, she would have the biggest smile on her face.

"Simon, I think your daughter has a crush on an angel."

I turn in surprise and shoot a look at her. "What?! You know he's an angel?" I have  just finished lunch and I'm washing my hands at the sink.

"Of course! He stops by the bakery every day to check on me and Sandy. He even helps around. Heaven sent, I say."

Alice means figuratively, not literally.I sigh in relief as I grab a paper towel and dry my hands.

Daddy looked up from his phone. "That's nice of him! I don't like any of the young men around here, but that Castor kid has a good head on his shoulders. He stays to himself. I like that!" Daddy looks back at his phone and continues to play his game.

"You and that damn phone! You're going to hurt your eyes," Alice snaps at him as she places a bowl back into the fridge.

"I actually think the phone is a good thing for him. He's less mean and drinks less," I say as I flash my dad a smile and sit across from him.

"What?! Is that true?" She asks as she wipes the counter.

Daddy smiles. "You would know that if you weren't so busy in town."

Alice rolls her eyes as she folds the rag and sits next to me. "I've been working hard to get this place going. We've hired people too. I'll only be working this hard until we're up and running. I plan on having weekends off. I'm still a part of this family." Her eyes began to pool. "You don't understand how it makes me feel that I am doing something I've always wanted to do. I also get to contribute to the bills."

Daddy puts his hand on top of hers. "It's never been about money. You are the glue that holds this family. I don't know what Emery and I would've done after Sarah and the boys passed away. She would've been so proud. Just like I am."

"Me too," I whisper to Alice as her tears spill over.

She uses her apron and wipes her eyes. "I love you both."

"So!" I yell trying to break the emotional moment. "The guys are taking care of everything in the barn so I'm not needed. Can I accompany you to see this bakery?"

"Oh, Em! I've been waiting for you to ask me." She laughs, continuing to wipe her eyes.

We arrive at the bakery around 1 pm. It isn't even that far of a drive. Alice pulls into a spot as the men are about to set up ladders.

"What are they doing?" I ask her as she goes to the trunk of her car.

"They are going to put the sign up today. Summers Delight. What do you think?"

I beam. "Are you kidding?! I love it! Am I going to get free pastries?"

She smiles as she walks towards me and puts her arm around my shoulders. "Absolutely not! You're a sucker for your dad's wishes. He will have you here daily trying to get donuts and cakes. No!"

I shake my head. "Yeah, you're right."

We walk into a very busy store. Lights and walls are installed. The walls need to be painted and some of the men are in the process of putting the tile on the floor.

"No, it's wrong!" A very agitated Sandy storms towards us. "Emery, dear, lovely to see you." She air kisses me.

I am a little taken aback. "Uh, hi!"

"Alice!" She grabs my aunt's hand and takes her to where the tiles are being placed. "Did we not choose a much hotter pink? This is way too light! I don't like it!" She stomps her foot. "I also fired our little project manager. You were absolutely right when you said we could do this ourselves! It's been screw up after screw up with him." Sandy's stares at my aunt as her cheeks turn bright red. The whole tile situation really has her upset.

"Okay, lets breath in and out. You're the one turning hot pink," she says to Sandy. "Now where's the binder with all the information? I actually had a sample in there of which tile we chose." Alice grabs Sandy's hand and they walk toward the back. Sandy sighs deeply and smiles as she follows my aunt to the back.

I am sitting on a chair when I happen to look up. Mr. Castor walks in. He looked around and smiled when he sees me.

"Emery, how are you feeling?" He walks toward me as I stand and shakes my hand.

"I'm actually great, Mr. Castor. Thanks for asking." I blush. This meeting is odd, seeing as though he knows about Levi being an angel.

"Call me Rick. Please. I feel old when you young people call me Mr. Castor," he says placing a hand to his heart.

I laugh. "Sure thing, Rick! Your wife is in the middle of a panic attack. The floor tiles are all wrong." I look toward the back.

"Her obsession with pink is ridiculous. I'm sure it's the wrong color or something." He sighs, shaking his head.

I take my pointer finger and place it on my nose. "Yep!"

"Alright! Guess we can't install the display cases then." He sighs. "Let me go and calm my wife down."

I smile at him as he walks toward the back. I sit down and sigh as I pull my phone out.

My dad had shown me how to download games so I figured I'd try solitaire.

Once I download it, I begin to play. I smile when I beat the first game. It is a rather easy game to play. After winning 5 straight games I decide to download another game when I look up. Levi is standing in front of me.

I jump. How long had he been standing there?

Levi looked rather annoyed. Is he mad at me?

"Come outside," Levi says with a vein protruding from his forehead. He turns and walks out of the store. What is it with him thinking he can tell me what to do? I cautiously stand and follow him.

The workers are in the process of putting the store sign up, on the building, so I have to be careful. I step around and see Levi leaning on the wall. When he sees me he turns the corner. I follow.

I'm almost positive this won't end well.

I approach him. "Hi," I say nervously.

"Why are you here?" He asks angrily, his eyes smoking and turning red.

"What?" Am I not allowed to be here?

"Are you deaf now? Why are you here?" He bites back.

You would have thought the man slapped me. "This is my aunt's bakery too! I have a right to be here!" I look around nervously. I hope no one hears me.

"No, you don't! I enjoy helping my mom here. If you stay or continue to come I will not show my face here." He steps closer to me, his red around his eyes start to dance, the whites of his eyes turning gray and then black. "Do you understand?"

Why is he purposely trying to scare me?!

"I'm not a child," I whisper terror. Why am I not allowed anywhere near him now? I look toward the street. Every time he goes demonic on me there is no one in sight!

It kind of hurts my feelings that he doesn't want me anywhere near him. "I have no way to get back home," I say barely audible.

Levi's eyes slowly turn blue again. "My dad is going home. He will take you. Let's go!" He grabs me by arm and instantly lets go. There's a look of pain on his face as he at his points for me to continue to walk ahead.

I am really confused by his reaction to me. Now he definitely turning into a bully. There is no way I should let him speak to me that way. He must think I am frightened because I know his secret.

Which is true.

However, I can't let him walk over me, especially since he saved my life. No way will I expose his secret, but he doesn't need to treat me like a doormat.

I will show him exactly who I am!

I walk back into the shop. I must've been so deep in my own thoughts that I don't realize Levi had already walked in before I did. He is already talking to his dad. They both stare at me as I approach.

"Em, you need a ride?" Rick asks me while looking over a spreadsheet. "Just give me a few minutes while-"

I interrupt him. "Actually, that's quite alright, Rick. I just remembered my aunt and I have something to do after this. Thank you though. Rain check!" I smile as I walk by a seething Levi and head toward the back.

I don't dare turn around. I am frightened of the daggers Levi is throwing at me with his eyes.

Turning the corner, I find Sandy and Alice in a room. Its a plain office. They both have their own desks, laptops, and phones. It's obvious whose side is whose. Sandy has a pink desk. Alice has dark wood.

"Mind if I stay back here for a while?" I ask them both.

"Of course not! Alice and I are actually heading across the street. We will be back in an hour." They both smile at me and grabs their purses. I sigh heavily as Alice pats my shoulder and they walk out.

My heart drops when it suddenly dawns on me. Oh, no! I have just stood up to Levi. Will he dare come back here and rip me a new one since they were heading out? I pray he left with his father. Slowly closing the door, I pull my phone out. At least now he won't be able to scare me by just standing at the doorway.

I sit at my aunt's desk and turn my phone on. I begin to download some more games when thoughts of stupid Levi pop into my head.

Who the hell does Leviathan Castor think he is? Just because he is extremely good looking, rich, and has superpowers doesn't mean he can push people around. I feel myself start to get agitated. On top of that I become uncomfortable. It's distracting me from my game!

I suddenly get antsy and want to leave. I am hungry anyways and need to be far away from that clown.

I get up and head to the front of the store. Levi is nowhere in sight. Good! I smile triumphantly. He's left! Turning around, I head back to the office. I guess I could stay a while longer since the atmosphere in this place has changed for the better.

I walk into the office, sighing in relief, when I see Levi seating at his mother's desk. His feet on the desk, staring right at me.

My heart immediately starts racing a thousand miles per second but I can't show him that. I cross my arms and smile at him but it doesn't reach my eyes.

He sighs loudly. "May I ask why you didn't leave when I told you too?" Levi asks, a hint of anger flashing on his face. He then looks at his fingers.

"You mean why I didn't listen to a pompous angel?" I take two steps closer to him and put my hands on my hips. "You're not my father and you're certainly not my aunt. Why should I listen to you?" I smile at him.

If I blink, I would've missed it. Levi is now standing right in front of me. The parents that were sitting on his moms desk and raining down from the ceiling behind him.  I immediately jump back, hitting my head rather hard against the wall!

"You, mortal, have a death wish! How dare you speak to me like that?" Levi growls as his eyes slowly begin turning red. I look down, terrified.

My breathing increases as I gather the courage to look into his once beautiful eyes. Why is he always trying to intimidate me when we both know he wont hurt me? I close my eyes and slow my breathing.

"Stop trying to scare me when I'm certain you won't hurt me." I open my eyes.

Levi squints as he stares at my lips and bends towards me slightly. "I don't need to lay a finger on you to hurt you. You don't know me, Miss Summer. You don't even know what I am exactly. Just because you have a certain definition, of an angel, plugged into that tiny brain doesn't mean I'm good or virtuous."

"Enlighten me then, oh, celestial one," I say with uncertain grin.

"I don't need to waste my breath on you." He backs away staring at me up and down. "You and your kind make me laugh. You actually think you are the center of the universe." He throws his hands up. "But if you only saw how pathetic you all are, especially you, Emery Summer. You give Seraphim a good laugh."

I try so hard not to let him get under my skin. It's hard when he was being so hurtful and basically called then human race ants. My eyes pool and my lips quiver. "Why must you be so mean?"

"Because I know who you are." Levi walks up to me and points to my chest. "Who you pretend to be."

I slap his hand away. "You know nothing about me, Leviathan!"

He is a bit taken aback by my outburst, but nonetheless, smiles and backs away, sitting on his mother's desk. He rakes his hair and crosses his arms. "On the contrary, I do. When I saved your life, I experienced every one of your memories and feelings you've ever felt. The ups and downs. Death and life." He looks away. "It was very unpleasant and annoying."

I shake my head slowly. Are all angels this mean? "I'm sorry my experiences with life aren't to your satisfaction." I feel a single tear rolls down my cheek. I quickly wipe it away as I walk closer to him. No one has ever hurt me like this!

"I'm sorry my family's loss is such an inconvenience. I'm so sorry you had to burden yourself with saving my life. Since I'm such an insignificant blimp in the whole universe." I turn and leave the office sobbing.

Why did he have to move to our small town? Why am I able to see that damn light in the sky when everyone else can't? Why did he have to save me that night?

I am about to exit the bakery when my aunt and Sandy walk in. Both of their mouths drop at the sight of me.

"Emery, what's wrong?!" Alice and Sandy ask in unison. They were both in shock. Alice tries to hug me but I don't want it.

"Auntie, can I please use your car and go home?"

She wipes my tears away as I try to muffle the sobs. "Emery, what's wrong?!"

"Nothing! Please!" I beg her. The three of us turn and see Levi rounding the corner in the back. He stands there without any expression. Sandy's face turns from confusion to anger. She now knows the source of my state.

Alice nods and goes into her pocket. She gives me the keys and grabs my head so I am forced to look at her. "When I get home, we will discuss this. Do you understand me?"

I shake my head and walk out.
