Chapter 16
"Why are you smiling?" Levi asks me with concern.
I don't even realize I am smiling. "It's just...I feel like my life has sort of been a lie." I lean back on the chair, crossing my legs. "Especially with the tornadoes. The natural disaster that kills thousands is because of a fight?" I shake my head as I glance out of the window. The sun is starting to rise.
Levi turns and looks out the window. As he turns back to me he has a look of sadness. "Wow. I didn't mean to keep you up babbling about myself. And almost getting you killed. I'm truly sorry."
"Are you kidding me?!" I say perking up. "It was an adventure! I feel like every time I'm around you, something crazy happens. I don't necessarily know if it's going to be good or bad but it certainly isn't the worst thing." I start to play with my fingers nervously. "And I always feel safe around you."
Levi smiles at me but it doesn't reach his eyes.
My phone vibrates in my pocket. I take it out and it's a message from my aunt.
Alice:
Hey! Um, did you stay out with Levi?! Your dad isn't happy but I managed to calm him down. He went fishing with Mr. Clayton early this morning. I'll be at the bakery by myself today finishing some paperwork. Sandy is out of town. Come and visit me. Love you!
I tried to hide my smile. This is so embarrassing but I really appreciate Alice and the fact that she always defends me.
I stand from the chair. Levi's brows furrow as he mimics me.
"I have to go. I need to freshen up and somehow get to town. My aunt wants me at the bakery."
Levi smiles. "Follow me." He puts his hand out. I hesitantly grab it and we walk out of the study. We pass the clean, white, marble kitchen and into another room which has absolutely nothing in it. We walk across that room.
Levi opens the door and we enter a different room. He hits a switch. My mouth drops when I see about twenty cars lined up. They are different types of makes and models.
It's a massive garage?
Levi grabs a small remote from the wall, never letting my hand go, and we continue toward the garage door. He stops in front of a white Range Rover. He lets my hand go and smiles at me.
"Here," he says handing me the keys. "I heard your conversation with Marcus last night about wanting a car so you can have this one."
I am taken aback. "No! Are you kidding me?!" I look at the car. It's beautiful and perfect but I can't take it. I start to feel uncomfortable.
"Why? Friends give friends things all the time. Think of this as an early birthday gift." He smiles as he places the small remote on the roof of the car.
"Yes, that's true. But they don't give each other expensive cars." I point to the car as my eyes glaze over. Is he for real?
"Well, if it's in the budget then they should. Besides, I don't drive it. I spent ninety thousand dollars and it seems too girly for me." He looks at the car and pats the side mirror.
I scoff. "Too girly?" I can't believe he just want to give me an expensive car. I shake my head. "What are you going to drive?"
Levi shrugs. "Well, after I call in about my Porsche being stuck out in the field back in Des Moines, I think I'll drive the caddy." He turns toward the truck at the far end. It's a matte, black Cadillac Escalade.
"If it's still there." I look down at my shoes. "That storm sounded monstrous." I get goosebumps and instantly remember my busted my lip. Putting my hand on my lip, I notice it isn't cut anymore. I'll have to remember to ask him later about it.
"Yes, it was," Levi says taking a step closer to me. I have to bend my head back just to be able to see his expression. One that looks of longing.
He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear. "When can I see you again?" He whispers looking into my eyes.
Wait, what?! How do I answer that?
I clear my throat and look at the Range Rover. "How about I borrow the car? That seems fair. Right?" I grab the remote from the roof of the car. I just want to change the conversation.
Levi looks hurt but he nods as he walks toward the wall and hits a button. The garage door opens and sunlight peeks in. It's obvious that today is going to be a beautiful day. He opens the car door for me and helps me in with downcast eyes.
I feel like he's sad because of me. He has done so much for me that I guess hanging out with him won't be the worst thing. And there was so much I wanted to know about his past. "I'll bring you your car tonight. And you can tell me more about your demonic, angelic past."
His face glows. "You don't have to insert the key. Just keep the remote with you. Hit the black button near the steering wheel to turn the car on and off."
I look around and see the engine on/off button. I try to remain calm but I am so excited! It will be so embarrassing driving around in this thing but I'll manage. This car really is beautiful!
I've never driven anything this nice. Well, besides Daddy and Alice's new vehicles.
I push the button and the car roars to life. We smile at one another as I rev the engine.
Levi's face then turns serious. "Put your seatbelt on and have a good day, Miss Summer."
I sigh feeling agitated. "Will you stop calling me Miss? You make me feel like a Grandma."
"When will you give me a kiss?" He asks making his brows jump. A hint of lust on his face.
I nod as I grab the seatbelt and put it on. I laugh as I look away. "Have a great day, Leviathan."
I put the car in gear and exit the garage slowly.

I head straight home and take a shower. After that, Alice asks me to pick up some breakfast at the diner across the street from the bakery.
"Did you see the news this morning about Des Moines?" Alice ask spreading butter on her toast. We are sitting in her office.
"No, why?" I play the fool. If I tell Alice we were in the middle of that storm last night, she will tell Daddy. Between the two of them, I will be locked in the house for a few decades.
"A hurricane. Category three. Appeared out of nowhere right at the edge of Des Moines. No one was killed but several business are completely destroyed."
I pretend to be in shock. "That's insane!" I clear my throat and pull my phone out of my pocket. I pretend to look through it.
"So," Alice says sitting back in her chair and smiling. She crosses her legs and arms. "How did you get here? Cab? Uber? Levi?"
I shake my head and try to hide my smile as I put the phone on her desk. "No to the cab, what's an Uber, and sort of."
She looks at me in confusion as she bites into her toast. "Explain!"
I explain to Alice how Levi and I basically stay up all night talking about our pasts.
He felt bad that I didn't have a way around and wanted to give me a car. The one that looked girly.
"He wanted to give you the car?! Are you serious right now?" Alice's mouth hits the floor.
"Yes, but I told him I was just borrowing it. I will return it tonight. It's just odd that every member of that family keeps giving away cars." I take a bite of my omelet.
Alice grabs her coffee cup and blows into it. "Yes, but they also have big hearts and it's obvious how much they adore us. Rick also bought old Mrs. Sampson a brand new lawnmower, and he paid to have Mr. Dugerd's roof fixed, thanks to the storm that almost killed you. Give them a chance, honey! The Castors are God-sent."
I sigh. Alice is right. However, she can't fault me. I've lived in a security blanket all my life and I am suspicious of everything and everyone. After Mom and my brothers died I stopped talking to a lot of people and kept my inner circle tiny.
A circle where no one can get to me and hurt me emotionally. No power to leave me, to hurt me. Nothing.
I did have boyfriends, but emotionally I am closed off. They have never broken my heart because I didn't give it to them. The only people in this entire world who could literally hurt me are Alice, Daddy, and Katey. No one else.
"So you're going to see him tonight? Again? And are you spending the night out?" Alice asks, making her brows jump. A mischievous smile spreads throughout her face.
I choke on a piece of egg. "Stop!" I cough. "It's not like that at all."
"Yeah?" Alice asks suspiciously. "Then what's it like? It better be PG-13 because I will tell Simon."
I sigh as I sir back on the chair. "He's complicated and there's nothing going on between us. I swear."
"Well, most men are, honey, " Alice says as she bites into her sausage. "And by the looks of him, he has a ton of layers. A great guy though," she says as she shrugs.
"True. I'm just nervous of what I'll find once I peel all the layers." I sigh as I rake my hair and look out of the window. I just keep thinking about Levi and how nice he was this morning.
I then look over at Alice from the corner of my eye.
She furrow her brows and smiles. "Wow!"
"What?" I ask clearing my throat and smiling back at her.
"If you haven't already, you'll be in love with him in no time."

After a very tantalizing conversation, I decide to leave. Alice doesn't understand that I woke up yesterday morning loathing Levi. If anything, I just want to be good friends; even though I know I am feeling more for him.
And what kind of relationship will I have with a two thousand year old angel? One that obviously won't go anywhere. He is older than dirt also and I am still wet behind the ears.
I pull up to the house and sigh. When I get out of the car I look up into the sky. I wonder if I can see a seraph in the morning sky? And there isn't even a cloud in the sky. Just the sun positioned at its highest point.
Noon.
I walk into the house and close the door when someone knocks. Odd, I think to myself. I didn't see any other cars parked in front of the house. Maybe it's Levi? I smile at the thought.
I turn the knob and open the door.
It isn't who I expect at all! It's a man though. His back is toward me. He has red hair and wears tight black jeans and what looks like a sleeveless, red, dress shirt. I can tell the sleeves have been ripped off by the fibers that hang off the seams.
He turns around and smiles at me. The only thing I see his chest. The man is wearing a button-up shirt that he didn't bother buttoning up.
My mouth goes slack as I am able to see half a tattoo on his chest. It looks like the sun. I shake my head and look at his face again. I suddenly remember him from last night.
He's the guy that I almost danced with. The guy with the scar near his eye and the small blond patch of hair.
"Hi," I say looking around confused. I immediately am cautious. How does he know where I live?
"Hello, Emery. How are you?" He ask as he flashes his perfect, white teeth.
"I'm sorry! I don't remember your name and how did...uh...you know where I live?" I hold onto the doorknob just in case I have to slam the door in his face.
"Well, considering the fact that you know Levi, I'm sure this won't sound weird." He continues to smile. I gave him a puzzled look.
"I can smell the both of you all over this farm." He inhales and closes his eyes. He then opened his eyes and examines me from head to toe.
Of course.
I nod. "Right." It doesn't sound far-fetched at all because he is obviously a seraph. I look at him up and down.
The angel in front of me is attractive. I'll give him that. But Levi obviously hates him so it's probably best to stay away from him.
"Listen, uh..." I can't remember his name. Is it Victor?
"Vartan," he says winking at me.
I clear my throat and look around. Did I say he is gorgeous? My heart races a little. "Yes! Vartan. I really don't know you and..."
"Would you like to?" He asks stepping forward and putting his hands on the door frame. Can he be more obvious with the flirting?
My eyes open wide and I try not to smile. I fail miserably. "I have an unusual small circle of friends which I like. The minute I want a new friend and start handing out applications, I'll make sure you get one."
Vartan laughs and suddenly tilts his head and sniffs the air. "Uh oh! Incoming!"
I give Vartan a befuddled look.
What is he talking about? "Excuse me-"
Suddenly, a huge ball of fire falls from the sky! Vartan blocks my view once it hits the ground. A huge plume of dirt flies upwards and brings to rain down.
I throw open the door and walk around Vartan. I smile when I see him.
It's a seething, blonde Levi. The dirt where he landed is charred black. His eyes are red and he is wearing nothing but black, leather pants and boots. His wings flap twice causing the dirt around him to fly all over the place. Vartan looks at me suspiciously and then grins.
Levi takes two steps forward, his wings folding back and disappearing. "Why are you here?!" He yells!
I can tell he is fighting back the will to fight Vartan.
"I just wanted to visit the woman who has caught your attention. Especially since she has the ability to see your true form. Very intriguing!"
"How dare you think for one moment it is any of your business?! You need to leave. Now!" Levi says incensed.
Part of me wants to walk back into the house and lock the door. However, these two may tear the house apart if I'm not here to somewhat mediate.
I'm just a mere mortal. What can I really do?
I take a step forward. Vartan begins to cackle at the sight of an angry Levi. Why is Vartan baiting Levi? Why does Levi hate him so much? My heart and head begin to race.
"Come now, Leviathan! Still holding a grudge?" Vartan snickers.
"I'll drop it when I get the vision of our father's death out of my head!" Levi seethes making fists.
Excuse me?! Is Vartan Levi's br-
"You could always kill yourself! That should end the torment," Vartan says putting his hands in his pockets. He looks at me and laughs. I look at him appalled.
"Just kidding,Emery. We can't die." He then mulls over his words, continuing to laugh. "Well not by our own hands. It's a process."
I continue to stare at Vartan perplexed. What the hell is so funny? Levi looks ready to end him. Even though they can't be killed.
Turning back to Levi, I squint. The area around his eyes began to turn red. Small red veins begin to form around his eyes and expand. I get scared and take a step back. I'm guessing this is what happens when he is beyond enraged.
Vartan gauges my reaction and sighs. "You need to relax before you kill the mortal. One blast from you and you will disintegrate the house and her." He looks at me again, unamused, and crosses his arms.
"Levi..." I whisper carefully. I swallow hard as my heart continues to race. He's capable of blowing me up?
Levi looks at me and blinks. I think he is so mad that he never saw me standing next to Vartan. He hesitates and begins to calm his breathing.
Vartan turns to me, putting his hands behind his back. He smiles but it doesn't reach his eyes. I begin to get uncomfortable. Is he trying to piss off Levi again?
I jump as Levi appears next to me, putting his arm around me. I look up at him and see the red around eyes have disappeared. His eyes are still red.
Vartan doesn't flinch at all as he scoffs at Levi and begins sizing him up. He's a couple inches shorter than Levi.
Vartan's eyes then rest on me as the strand of blonde in his hair begins to expand, making the red on his hair disappear. His clothes dissolves and he is wearing the exact clothing Levi is. Black, leather pants and boots with no shirt. I don't see any wings at all.
Examining Vartan, I'm in awe! These men are so beautiful in their celestial forms. Too bad they are crazy.
"How upsetting must it be to know those angels you read in that holy book of yours is inaccurate? That they possess the power to control you and destroy you, Emery," Vartan says menacingly as his eyes glow goldenly. The hairs all over my body stand up.
I think I hear Levi growl as his grip around my shoulder tighten. "Emery, please go inside the house," Levi says calmly. He lets me go.
I look at Vartan one last time. He now has a serious look on his face as he watches me walk back in and shut the door. I slowly walk into the living room but I make sure I'm standing near the foyer to hear them.
"Dangerous what you are doing, little brother," Vartan says nicely.
Levi scoffs. "Yeah? When has my well being ever been a concern for you?"
Vartan laughs. "It always has been. But you don't believe that. Do you?"
"Not for one second!" Levi growls angrily.
"You're treading dangerous waters being anywhere near her. You know that right?" Vartan asks. He sounds genuinely concerned.
I try to listen for Levi but he doesn't say anything.
Vartan then begins to snicker. What is so funny?
"I'll be on my way. It was nice to see you again, Leviathan."
"Unpleasant, as always, " Levi says through gritted teeth.
I then hear someone walk down the porch steps, followed by a booming sound. I run to the window and look towards the porch steps. I watch as the dirt near it begins to rain back down.
"What the hell was that all about?" I ask myself out loud.
"Vartan is my older brother," Levi says directly behind me. I turn around in shock.
"The one I helped rob the King and in return got us all hung."
I furrow my brows at Levi's words. "What?!"
