This couldn't be happening. This wasn't right. Levi couldn't be dead...
All this was running through your head as eren dialed 9-1-1. The previous day you and Levi had been getting intimate but then he started to look a bit pale. You made him lay down and he immediately slept. You and eren had both assumed he was just overheating.
"Hello? Yes I need an ambulance. Please hurry" said eren, his voice wavering. He gave the location of the camp site and hung up.
"Okay we just need to calm down" eren said, but panic was already deep into his voice and it erupted from him with every word. "I know it's just.. " you sob, cutting off the rest of your words. Eren wraps his arms around you, rocking you back And forth. The events that lead you here kept playing back in your head.
"Wake up sleepyheads" eren said, walking into the stuffy tent. You roll over and look at him with blurry vision. "What time is it" you say, rubbing your forehead.
"It's like 10" he said, checking his watch. "Breakfast was 2 hours ago." he said, holding up some granola bars and tossing them to you.
"Hey what's the deal with grumpy? I'm surprised he hasn't woken up yet"
Just as those words left eren's mouth, Levi sat up and began choking and gasping for air. "Need some water?" eren said, jokingly. Levi began crawling on all 4's towards the opening of the tent and began to cough harder. Droplets of blood began to drop down from his mouth with every heave. "Whoa man are you okay?" eren's face immediately turned from joking to serious. You rushed over to him and put a hand in his shoulder. "Go get some water fast!" you say to eren in a panic(good thing they weren't at the disco)
Eren rushed over to the cooler and retrieved 2 water bottles. Just as he was coming back, Levi collapsed onto the tent floor, blood smeared around his mouth. Eren dropped the water and fell to his knees. You checked for a pulse. A heartbeat. Anything. Nothing was there. You tossed your cellphone to eren. "Call 911 now" you say, trying to stay calm, but you felt ready to heave up whatever was left from the previous night's dinner.
Eren nodded in agreement and then stood up, shakily.
"We think it was something he may have ingested. Have you been eating any of the local fish from the ponds?" the nurse asked eren, as you were still shaking in shock.
"I... I don't think so" he said, running his hand through his greasy hair. "We've only been eating what we brought along" he said, shaking his head. Suddenly a doctor appeared at the open door. "We think it was something along the lines of Pulmonary Embolism" he said, looking at several sheets on his clipboard.
"Was?" you say, your voice almost a whisper. The doctor looked at the floor and sighed. "I'm sorry for your loss" he said, turning around in the doorway. Time seemed to stop. Everything was happening at that moment yet nothing seemed to be real. You felt the hot, wet years streaming down your face. You felt eren put a hand on your shoulder to gently shake you but you couldn't do anything. You say there, almost unaware of life it's self.
A series of loud shouts and footfalls brings you out of the trance. You look out into the hall and see Levi being rolled down the hallway on a cart. "We're getting vital signs" a doctor shouted to a nurse down the hallway. Your heart sped up. You looked at eren then ran after the doctor, wanting to know if what you heard was real. The doctor pulled you into the operating room and told you to sit next to him and try to keep him focused and awake. You clutch onto his hand and begin sobbing, trying to say his name. His eyelids fluttered and you stare down into them. "Levi.. Its me.. Stay with me please.." you manage to say through breaths of air. The doctor began to hook him up to certain machines and put a needle into his other arm.
Levi let out a dry cracking noise that resembled a chuckle And hoarsely whispered "you can't get rid of me that easy."
You pushed the wheelchair out into the parking lot to board Levi into the truck. The doctor said he could not stand unless it was absolutely necessary and to avoid any strenuous exercise for at least 2 weeks. You could live with that. Levi turned in his chair like prison and said "see I told you I'd make it."
Tears welled in your eyes, and you smiled knowing he was alive and still as much of a smartass as usual. "I love you" You say to him, kissing his forehead. "I love you too kid" he said, smiling for the first time in a while.
