Day 8
Dear Annabel,
I was right! Something did go wrong on my first day.
It was all going fine at first. All I had to do was give people the tickets they asked for, collect the money from them, and then put it into this metal cash box. It was a long and monotonous time, but eventually it ended. The theater was closing, and all I had to do was clean up after the last group of people left.
As I was exiting my little cubicle, I noticed the drinking fountain across the room was stuck on, and there was a very large puddle. I decided to run (this was the mistake) and with my eyes on the drinking fountain, I ran into this girl as she was on her way out! We both fell into the puddle, and water continued to spray, getting us even more wet.
I jumped right up and offered my hand to the girl. She was so wet. Her hair was short and brown, and at this point, dripping. She didn't take my hand; she just got up herself.
"I'm so sorry!" I told her. I still feel terrible.
She just laughed.
"Why are you laughing?" I asked.
"Because that doesn't happen everyday," she said.
"This is my first day," I said. "What do you propose I do with this leaky fountain?"
"Is anyone else here?"
"They must be in the back."
"Well," she said. "I can try to fix it."
I was about to ask how when she pulled a brick out of her purse and hit it against the water spout. Yes, that says brick. You didn't read that wrong. She pulled an actual brick out of her purse.
To my surprise, the water fountain stopped running and we were left with the large puddle.
"How am I supposed to clean this huge puddle?" I said. "This is carpet."
"You're gonna need lots of paper towels, boy," she said. "Good luck."
Then she started walking away.
"Thank you!" I called.
She gave me a peace sign on her way out the door.
I then made my way to the storage room and pulled out several stacks of paper towels. Then I called out for anyone who was willing to help. I didn't know where the janitorial closet was.
Thankfully, someone did come. It was a college aged boy who did happen to know where a mop was. He soaked the water up and afterwards we lay paper towels over the wet spot. After that all we could do was set up a few fans and hope there wasn't mold tomorrow.
Anyway, that was my first day. I knocked a girl off of her feet and we both got wet. Hopefully it goes better next time.
Love,
Ian
