11 | as suspicions grow
"You are happy, aren't you Elijah?" Jess asked a rather quiet Elijah who hadn't said much to her or to anyone at the party after her or rather her mothers' announcement.
"It's not about being happy. I just wish you had of at least waited to tell me before announcing it to all these random people." He responded softly, still processing the fact that he and Jess were going to have a baby.
"I wanted to surprise you, I thought you'd be pleased...and they're not random people."
"There are millions of ways you could have surprised me. This wasn't one of them." He replied as he helped her clear away the empty wine glasses sitting on the dining table.
"Okay, I'm sorry. I didn't think."
"No Jess, you never do." He commented harshly, moving away from Jess and entering the kitchen.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asked, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion at his latest remark. She adjusted her body so she stood directly in front of him, obstructing his movements and forcing him to make eye-contact with her.
"Nothing, it's just...nothing."
"Why does it feel like something's changed...between me and you?" Jessica hesitantly leaned out and rested her hand against his cheek; feeling the graze of his lightly stubbled chin.
"Nothing's changed, we're the same. All couples fight, but I love you and you love me, and that's it." He gently grabbed hold of her wrist, planting a meaningful kiss against the palmer aspect of her hand.
The simper and visible flush forming on Jess's cheek emphasised the fact that she was falling for Elijah all over again; almost as hard as she had nearly eight years ago, "You do want this baby though, don't you?"
"I never said I didn't."
"You don't have to say it. It's written all over your face." She responded; the tone of her voice clement but still slightly accusing.
"I-I just didn't expect it to happen so soon." He admitted reluctantly.
"And now that it has?"
"Jess, If I'm honest, I really don't think I'm ready to be a dad yet."
Jess sighed deeply, glancing up at Elijah with her leaden eyes. Her fingers continued to fumble against each other indicating her nervousness but more-so her disappointment as she spoke, "I know we're young but I truly want this. Whether it happens now or later on means nothing to me. I want this baby, purely because it's ours. Can you imagine it, a child half of me and half of you? Don't you want that too?" As she finished her lengthy monologue, her tone resorted to pleading.
Elijah avoided her pleading gaze. Of course, he had wanted that one day but that day definitely wasn't today.
Throughout the years, it had rapidly become customary for Jess to get whatever she asked of him, pretty much as soon as she asked and as the man who loved her and wanted nothing more than to see a huge smile on her face, he was more than happy to oblige.
But now more than ever, he was coming to realise that it truly was a one-way street with Jess.
Kylie coming to live with them for months, remaining celibate and now this. These had all been decisions Jess had made on her accord with little negotiating with Elijah.
"I guess that's that, then." He smiled weakly; the smile not quite reaching his eyes.
"How long have you known?"
"Not long at all. I was so busy with the wedding preparations that I didn't even realise my period was late. I went to the doctor and found out I'm nearly three months."
Elijah sighed, "And you didn't think to tell me before you went to the doctors'?"
"The thought of being pregnant didn't even cross my mind. I thought it was something else, something really minor."
"Well, it's good it's not something more serious. But next time, just be honest with me about everything yeah?" He wrapped his arms around her waist and felt her head lean against his shoulder.
He winced inaudibly as he realised how hypocritical he was being, and how he himself was being anything but honest with Jess about his recent actions.
Jess nodded against his shoulder, "I promise."

"Ma, why don't you ask Kylie to come and live with you for a bit?"
"Where's this coming from?" Valerie asked her son who had invited himself over for dinner that night.
"I'm just thinking about you. This is the longest she's been back in London for years, it just seems right to have her live with you." Jax explained, holding the spoon in his mouth as he proceeded to chop the onions; an old trick his mother had taught him to ward off the onion tears.
"You know I want nothing more. But you and I both know how unhappy that would make Kylie." She smiled a sad smile to herself, for she knew would always blame herself for her daughters' sadness.
"What do you think of Jess and Elijah?" Jax abruptly blurted out.
"What kind of question is that, Jax?" Valerie laughed to herself as she continued adding the Garlic Powder to her home-made Chicken and Chorizo Paella dish. When she noticed Jax's silence and the serious expression on his face, she finally answered, "Well, I don't know them that well, but it's clear that they care about each other very much, and they're happy together. That's what matters isn't it."
"And do you think it's right for Kylie to live with them for so long? She's already been there nearly two months."
"Jaxon Campana, what exactly are you trying to tell me?" Valerie asked, knowing her son well enough to know his annoying habit of beating around the bush before getting to the main point at hand.
"Kylie is my sister and I love her more than anything."
"Mhmm, go on?" She eyed her son, eagerly waiting for the but that she knew was coming.
"But, she ruins a lot of relationships. It's not her fault, not really, she's hurting. But Ma, I think we can help her if we bring her home." Jax continued to explain, still not addressing the true issue at hand.
"We can't help her if this place is part of the cause of her unhappiness. She seems happier than I've ever seen her in a long time. I'm not about to ruin that now."
"Ma, I didn't wanna say this but I think there's something going on between Kylie and Elijah."
"What?" Shock lined Valerie's face. On her aged face, the lines moved in a peculiar manner as she struggled to absorb what her son had just revealed to her.
"I heard them arguing. Kylie was talking about how he shouldn't care who she sleeps with and to focus on Jess." Jax exclaimed, trying to get his mother to understand where he was coming from.
"That doesn't mean they're having an affair, Jax! It could mean anything. Kylie would never do that to Jess. She loves her like a sister, more even." Valerie yelled at her son.
"Kylie sleeps around a lot Ma. I'm not blaming her, maybe it was him but you can't deny that something could be going on."
"You know what Jax? So do you, you think I haven't noticed how many guys you've brought home throughout the years?" She retaliated.
"You're so observant Ma. How comes you didn't notice how many times dad brought Libby home right under your nose?" He yelled back at his mother in a moment of anger. And suddenly, it was too late to take those words back.
"You're right, I didn't notice until it was too late. But I know my daughter would never do that Jax, and you should know it too. You should know that Kylie isn't like that, she won't make the same mistakes as her dad. She won't because she's suffered herself and she wouldn't put Jess through that." She spoke softly but her voice cracked a number of times.
"I'm sorry Ma. You're right, Kylie wouldn't. I shouldn't have even brought it up." He placed his hand on his mothers' shoulder before hugging her and hearing her gentle whimpering sounds as she sobbed into his chest.
---------------------------------------
"And why exactly are you giving me the cold shoulder?" Kylie jumped up, claiming a seat on the kitchen top.
Elijah bent down to check on the chicken in the oven. Jess had decided she had a headache that evening and so Elijah was left to make dinner alone that night, despite still not knowing how to work the stove properly. He was used to preparing the food whilst Jess cooked.
He continued to ignore Kylie as he cautiously opened the oven door, only to be welcomed to the impending heats of hell as he realised the chicken he'd left for over an hour was now burnt.
"Does computer science but doesn't know how to make oven food yet. Stupid much?
"Okay Elijah, this was funny like an hour ago. Now you're just being really silly." She whined as she pushed his body out of the way and on some oven gloves before bending down and removing the tray from the oven.
"I know. Why don't I go upstairs, and me and Jess can compare notes on your dick game?" She muttered, as she picked apart the burnt chicken and inserted some into her mouth.
"You wouldn't dare, Kylie. And don't eat that, don't you known burnt food can be carcinogenic?"
"Well, it got a reaction, didn't it? And meh, don't care." She shrugged carelessly, ready to spoon the second bite into her mouth.
"Spit it out. Spit it the fuck out, Kylie." He shook the tray under her as he shook her body gently, indicating for her to spit the burnt food out which she reluctantly did, giving him the finger straight after as he dumped the contents of the tray into the bin.
"You're invited to my room tonight." She said, coming up behind him and squeezing his pert butt.
"Stop. Jess is pregnant, this ends now." He said, pushing her away from her as he moved to the sink to begin washing up before deciding on making cereal for dinner instead.
"It's just sex, it's fun. I know that's not in your vocabulary, but come on." She whispered in his ear.
"Anyway, it's your choice. I'll be waiting for you." She said as she sauntered out of the room, knowing that he would find his way to her bed again, tonight.
