03 | châteauneuf-du-pape

"How about Lola?"

"I mean I did sleep with Jeremy in year twelve so, do you think she'd be over that yet?" Kylie bit her lip lightly, a habit which had followed her around since high school.

"I feel this would be a whole lot easier if you hadn't slept with half of the guest list or their boyfriends." Elijah rolled his eyes which seemed to have been instinctive to him since Kylie's arrival less than twenty-four hours ago.

They had been sitting in Jess's mothers' lounge room for nearly two hours trying to create a wedding guest list and it was going absolutely terrible due to the fact that Kylie either had beef with or had slept with pretty much everyone's boyfriend, father, uncle or grandfather.

"Half is a bit lenient, I'm thinking more eighty to ninety percent of the guest list, darling." Kylie winked jokingly at Elijah. She considered it a talent how she was able to get on Elijah's last nerves from merely a few words leaving her mouth, and she absolutely loved it.

"Kylie, my love. There won't be a guest list at this rate. You'll just have to be as civil as possible and try not to cause a scene." Mrs Myers said, the frustration growing in her voice with each word. Jess's mum had never liked Kylie. Kylie was a walking-talking mess in her opinion. She had come from a broken home with a mother who had been in the funny farm for god knows what reason and now Kylie was determined to make it her mission to sleep with the entire male population. She didn't want her precious innocent daughter Jess to ever be associated with such...trash.

But since the two had met, donkey years ago every argument concerning Kylie had been completely and utterly futile. She didn't know what sort of black magic Kylie had done on her daughter, all she knew was that Jess would defend Kylie until she was blue in the face and that was that.

"Yes, of course Patricia." Kylie responded, the sarcasm dripping from each word. The feelings were completely mutual from Kylie's side.

"Call me Pattie please, Kylie."

"So, Lola's a yes then?" Jess finally spoke, breaking the deafening silence.  She made a face at Elijah which was supposed to say 'say something to ease this tension please, Elijah' but either he wasn't quite understanding or probably, more likely was enjoying Jess's mum laying into Kylie, as most of the feelings Pattie had towards Kylie were similar to his feelings towards her.

"Yup, who's next?" Kylie responded.

"Caleb, you know the blonde guy in our Math class, he's actually my work colleague now." Jess said.

Pattie, Jess and Elijah instantly stared at Kylie, waiting to hear how she'd had a one-night stand with him, or cheated on him and how it'd be way too awkward for the two of them to be in the same room again as had been the case with nearly all the other wedding guests.

"What? I haven't slept with him, I promise!"

All three concurrently let out a breath of relief, finally they were getting somewhere with the guest list.

"...But we went on a date once, and he took me home and I might have accidently hooked up with his brother Matt, and he kinda, sorta walked in on us?" Kylie explained tentatively, waiting for the backlash.

"Oh, for fucks sake." Elijah's hands flew to his head and he ran his hair through his curly mane, clearly exasperated.

"Well, that wasn't so bad, was it?" Kylie muttered once they'd returned back to the house and she plopped herself down onto the black matted couch, next to Elijah, who seemed absolutely bemused by this strange creature who was the one-and-only Kylie.

Jess laughed, "Well Kylie, you've really outdone yourself in my mother's books this time." She said, grabbing the very expensive Châteauneuf-du-Pape classic wine bottle from their fridge and passing it over to Elijah, along with three wine glasses.

They'd been saving the wine for one of those knackering days, and any day which involved Kylie constituted that exact definition.

"C'mon, I didn't even do anything this time. I mean, yeah she had a reason to be angry when I nearly slept with your brother in her bed and she walked in, but this was nothing compared to that!" She yabbered on.

Elijah rolled his eyes, again. He'd never in his life met a girl as sexually insatiable as Kylie.

He popped open the bottle before pouring the wine into his and Jess's glasses before reluctantly stopping at Kylie's glass, contemplating whether she was worthy of such expensive wine after the stunt she had pulled at his future mother-in-law's house.

"Elijah, you know I'm more of a tequila and vodka kind of girl, but I'll never say no to free alcohol." She continued.

"What really? I never would have guessed that." Elijah responded rather sharply, yielding him a glowering look from Jess whilst Kylie just chuckled in response.

Kylie had never been one to be offended very easily.

"What's the longest relationship you've ever been in, Kylie?" Elijah questioned, turning his body to face Kylie whilst spreading his arms and legs across the couch.

"Elijah!" Jess scowled.

"I'm only asking, you wanted us to get to know each other better, right?" Elijah retaliated, whilst moving his wine glass in circular motions before taking a long sip and then deciding he'd rather stick to his usual beer.

"One year."

Elijah coughed in surprise, before taking a long swig from the beer bottle Jess had just passed over to him. He had been almost certain that she'd never been able to maintain a relationship lasting longer than three months.

"How did it end?" Elijah continued, raising his eyebrows waiting for her to say how she was unable to help herself and had cheated on the poor guy with his brother or his best mate.

"Elijah, stop it." Jess warned, as she placed one hand on his shoulder.

Like Pattie, Elijah had always known that Jess could not take a single bad word against Kylie. The two had been best friends, well before Elijah had first mustered up the courage to ask Jess out on a date in Year ten. But surely, this was ridiculous. He was merely trying to get to know the girl better, like Jess had asked him to.

"Jess, it's fine. It was two years ago actually. Erm...I got pregnant, and things just...let's just say things went wrong from there."

You aborted the baby behind his back, didn't you?

Elijah struggled to imagine Kylie with a child, heck he struggled to imagine Kylie even being pregnant. But she was extremely irresponsible so it was bound to happen sometime.

Almost as though Kylie had heard into Elijah's thoughts, she responded, "I had a miscarriage." Her voice undeniably cracked at the word miscarriage, almost as though she was a child saying a big word that was difficult to pronounce.

The smirk that had been plastered on Elijah's face disappeared instantly and he was stunned into utter and complete silence. The only emotion he felt now was shame. Ashamed at how he'd judged her so hard in this situation. Kylie may be a lot of things but even she didn't deserve that.

"I'm sorry, Kylie." Barely able to formulate the words, let alone get the words out.

Jess immediately rushed over to Kylie's side, stroking her back and asking her repeatedly if she was alright, if she needed water or anything and glaring at Elijah.

"It's fine. I know what people think of me, and I don't expect you to be any different." She laughed, but it was an empty kind of laugh.

"Way to kill the mood right? Can we get some music in here or something?" She quickly said, trying to change the topic. She plastered a smile upon her face, and started swaying along to the music that Jess had quickly put on.

'Despacito' by Justin Bieber started playing; a favourite of both girls. Kylie grabbed Jess by her arms and started fake grinding her ass against her as the two giggled like they were still school girls.

* * * * *

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Jess confronted Elijah as soon as Kylie had left the room. They had ordered from Kylie's favourite pizza place, Dominoes and Kylie had gone up to her room to change into her nightwear.

"How the fuck was I supposed to know, you never ever told me!" Elijah retaliated, knowing that this was an argument that had been brewing for the past couple of hours. After Kylie had revealed about her miscarriage, Jess had pretty much snapped at everything Elijah had said.

"It's not something that you want random people to know though, is it?"

"Okay, so I'm a random person now?"

"You know what I mean, Elijah. She didn't want me to tell anyone. But you had no right to speak to her like that." Jess's hands were placed on her hips.

When Jess and Kylie had been in high school, Kylie had been the one full of sass, the one who always dealt with confrontation and loved it. Jess was slightly meek and shy. Except, when someone said anything against Kylie, Jess would turn into the incredible hulk in zero point zero one seconds as was the case now.

"Okay, I admit I made a mistake. If I had of knew I would never have brought it up." Elijah put his hands up in defeat, like a criminal admitting their crime and preparing for the handcuffs to be placed onto their wrists.

"You were judging her, trying to make her feel shit about herself." Jess continued, her loyalty to her friend immense.

"Look, I've apologised. I'm sorry Jess. What else can I say to make this better?"

"Go and apologise to her before the food gets here." Jess instructed.

"But I already said sor-"

"Go Elijah. Now." She interrupted him.

Elijah had already started making his way up the stairs before Jess had finished her sentence. It was typical of Jess to scold Elijah like she was his mother when the two argued. But he'd already decided he wasn't going to let Kylie interfere with their relationship, even if that meant he'd have to pretend to like the girl for six months.

Kylie's room door had been left ajar, and he peeked in to see Kylie tip-toeing at the edge of the room, near the window. He knocked lightly on her door.

What are you doing, Kylie?

"Come in!" Kylie was peering intently out of her attic room window.

She turned and saw Elijah.

"I remember when I used to live with my mum. I had a room in the attic then too, and I could barely reach the window, so I grabbed a stool and stood on it and spent hours just looking, seeing the people on the street and imagining what their lives were like. Who they were, what their job was, whether they were rich. Weird, right? But this room reminds me of childhood." Kylie rambled, still peering out of the window, on her tip-toes.

"It's not weird." Elijah knew loneliness like Kylie had known it as a child.

Whereas Jess had been born into wealth and a fully functioning family, both Elijah and Kylie were originally from working class families with more dysfunctioning families which meant that loneliness and unhappiness was a concept that was familiar to both of them.

Elijah moved to the window and stood beside Kylie. He'd never looked out of the window from so high up, but it was refreshing to take a minute and look at people so busy in the hustle and bustle of London life.

Kylie was still struggling on her tip-toes compared to Elijah who was towering above her slightly. He turned to look around the room for something that she could stand on, but nothing was visible.

"See that guy over there? In the navy blue suit? What do you think his life is like?" She pointed to the left to a guy who seemed to be having an argument on the phone, whilst walking towards a black Rolls Royce.

"Hmm...he looks like a Michael, and he's a solicitor having an argument with a client." He responded, laughing lightly and then gazing back towards her.

"And, he has a beautiful wife named...Susan? But he also has mistress who he's going to be visiting now instead of going to work, whilst his wife is completely oblivious." She chuckled along with him.

Elijah noticed for the first time how she had tiny little flecks of hazel in her grey eyes. Her grey eyes could resemble a fog, the muddling kind that distorts a persons' sense of direction and had them questioning right from wrong.

"Are you sure you're not that mistress?" Elijah placed his index finger on his stubbly chin, chuckling and pretending to be thinking intently. He abruptly moved away from her, realising that perhaps, they were a little too close for comfort.

"Hmm, you never know. I might be."

"Erm...actually I came to say sorry. You know, about earlier..." Kylie smiled in response, her beautiful dimples re-surfacing.

"Jess sent you, didn't she?"

"Well...no, kinda, yeah she did. But I am sorry, honestly."

"It's fine, really. It's not like you could have known. But It's not something I want to talk about. Ever." For the first time and for a fraction of a second Elijah saw sadness in her eyes, before she returned with the mischievous grin on her face.

"But there is something you can do to make it up to me?" She smirked at Elijah lightly.

"What's that?" Elijah and Jess' spoke at the same time as Jess was now standing at the door, smiling lightly.

"Invite Leon to dinner tonight, pretty please!" She placed her hands under her chin, making a pouty face at both Jess and Elijah who both laughed.

This girl will never change.
