Chapter 6

SATURDAY

"We have arrived, Hongjoong. You may now park the car, autopilot no longer available." Hongjoong nodded to no one in particular, a hand holding onto the brunette's seated by his side on the passenger seat.

"Here is fine, Violet." At the statement, the car shuts off.

He looked out the windowshield to a lonely pier, leading to an abandoned lake, as the night stars shone down, mirroring themselves on its surface.

"This place... Is this where you wanted to take me to today?" The man next to him asked, his intentions being nothing more than guaranteeing Hongjoong accomplishes all his wishes.

"Yeah..." Hongjoong smiles softly at the taller, but glancing up at him with sad glossy eyes, unsure how to feel. Which feelings were affecting him the most among all of them? Was he more scared or sad? More anxious or relieved?

He is quick to give up on the answer. Whatever it would be, wouldn't change the fact that he had an important task to perform today.

"Are you okay?" The deep voice asks softly filled with concern, trying to comfort Hongjoong in some way, although not really understanding the contrast between his soft smile and teary eyes.

"Yes, we... Me and Mingi... have been here many times before..." The blonde pauses, but as his mind knows exactly what he's going to say next, he looks up trying to defeat gravity and keep his tears from falling down. Not now, I'm almost there. "Mingi loved how... How shiny the stars looked from here in the night sky."

"I can't really see it from here, though." The droid frowned.

"You will once we get to the pier. Come with me." Hongjoong motioned for the other to follow him as they both got out of the car.

Walking side by side along the pier, Hongjoong suddenly halts, and the taller follows. "Sit at edge and wait for me, okay? I'll be right behind you."

Mingi nods and obeys him with no further questions. Hongjoong tenses up from stress, second guessing himself for a second, he crouches down releasing a deep breath that he didn't meant to come out staggered, but it did.

It's going to be over soon, I need this, I can do this.

His hands carefully search through his pockets, and as soon as they touch a small, cold object, he takes it out and holds it on both hands. As he blankly stares at it for a long moment. The liquid in the syringe shifting its silvery glow before his eyes, bright and lively, despite the dimness of the ill-lit pier at night.

"You probably have noticed that already, they all have this plug behind their ears, a little up into their hairline, on their scalp, hidden behind their hair. It is used for repairing and system updates, however rarely much needed. There are small holes there, apply this there, press the plunge once the needle is inside. It shouldn't take long, before his system is corrupted and he shuts down completely. It will be impossible to repair him once this substance gets into his system, so bear that in mind." The voice of the creator of the substance laying on his palms echoed in his head, a chill runs down his spine and Hongjoong nods to himself in understanding.

Standing up, he looks in the droid's direction, and sitting down on the edge of the pier just like he told him to, he looked exactly like Mingi, his Mingi.

And right then at that moment, looking at him, it was like Mingi was there again, alive, just waiting for him to sit by his side so they could enjoy another night together.

It was like he had never left Hongjoong behind.

As much as Hongjoong would love to believe that to be true, his aching heart knew it wasn't very well as a lump formed on his throat while he fought the urge to cry.

His frail nerves so distressed, his instincts were screaming for him to just lay down and curl up in fetal position. A subconscious urge everyone has, to try and go back to the time all humans feel the safest in their lives. Curled up in their mother's womb, not a single worry in the world.

Hongjoong shakes his head, burying the hesitant thoughts deep in his mind, and forces his body up and forward, walking all the way to the edge of the pier, and finally sitting by the brunette's side.

"You were right, Joong." the taller's deep voice suddenly affirms, startling Hongjoong, as he notices the blonde's presence next to him. "The stars look really beautiful looking up from here."

"Yeah..." Hongjoong slightly chuckles, admiring the stars for a long moment as he takes the chance to look up himself, the corners of his lips curling up into a peaceful smile. "They really do."

"Aren't they the coolest thing ever? They shine bright despite being surrounded by darkness and loneliness, I could look at them forever Joong." Mingi looked down from the sky to Hongjoong's face, and he was invaded with a strong feeling, one that he thought he knew exactly how it was supposed to feel, but always surprised him with how much more intense it could be, every second by Hongjoong's side showed him more and more of it, he was as certain as he could ever be. Hongjoong was the love of his life. "They're just like you, Joong. Whenever I feel alone and surrounded by darkness, having you in my life, wherever I look there are small pieces of you scattered everywhere, shining bright down on me. I love you, Kim Hongjoong, forever you are my star."

Hongjoong came back to reality, as a single sob he apparently was holding in for too long shook his shoulders violently, tears now streaming down his cheeks.

He looks to his side and sees Mingi's face watching him, but not the Mingi from his memories, and it hurts even more to know it's not his lover by his side at all.

"Why...?" Hongjoong's voice trembles, and he buries his face in his hands as he sobs uncontrollably. How much he's missed his boyfriend finally hit him, hard. But he was ready to go through it all, and let it all go. It was about time he faced reality, and properly mourned his lover. "Mingi... I loved you so much... I still do, why did you have to leave me..."

"Joong, I'm right here, you'll be okay." The droid scoots closer to Hongjoong, patting his back in a comforting manner.

A few deep breaths and Hongjoong is finally able to compose himself. He turns to the side, eyes meeting a pair of soft and shiny dark brown ones.

"You're right. I will be okay." He smiles at the other, ignoring his wet cheeks, and cups the handsome face of the taller in his hands.

After studying him upclose, saving every perfect feature in his mind while he still could, he then moves forward, connecting their lips in a desperate kiss from his part, which the droid quickly adapts to and follows along with his intensity, opening his mouth a little more, deepening it.

The droid holds Hongjoong's body close, as the latter hums into its mouth, savoring every sensation, touching and feeling up everywhere. Tonight would be his last chance to do that.

Hongjoong parts their kiss after a few minutes, a gloomy smile painting his lips. "It's time, dear. Turn your head to this side." He motions to his right indicating the direction and the droid obeys.

The blonde's hesitant hands work on two tasks, while one looks for the plug behind the droids ear, the other brings out the syringe from his pocket once again. As soon as he finds the hole the man instructed him about, he positions the syringe, but before pressing it, he holds it still, while turning the droid's head back to face him.

"I'm sorry I have to do this, but... thank you for taking care of me. I'll do my best to take care of myself." Hongjoong whispered, looking the droid deep in the eyes. He knew his words didn't mean anything to the droid, but he felt like he should at least end everything on good terms. It meant more to him, than to anyone else.

"Please do, and you're more than welcome." The droid deep voice always soft, as he smiled at Hongjoong, who felt reassured in a way. He was convinced it was the right thing to do. "Is this the part where I say goodbye?"

"Yes..." Hongjoong let out a weak chuckle.

"Goodbye, Joong."

Hongjoong's thumb pressed onto the plunger all the way, and in what felt like ten seconds to him, the eyes so similar to Mingi's flashed between a bright blue and Mingi's natural eye color a couple of times, before it went completely dull.

From the nose, also perfectly shaped like Mingi's, a strand of a silvery liquid trailed down along his mouth and jaw, and before Hongjoong could see where it went, the droid's head fell forward, bringing the rest of his body along with its weight, bending forward until it lost hold of itself, and fell into the water.

Hongjoong watched as the body sank deeper into the water, until he couldn't see it anymore.

His head fell down, as he let out a long shaky sigh. He couldn't quite grasp onto what exactly he felt at that moment, but he was glad he felt just fine.

He got up, suddenly feeling an unusual sensation on his body. He took one step and turned around, suddenly he felt like his body lighter than ever before.

As if a huge weight had been taken away from his shoulders.

Step by step, he slowly made his way back to his car, and as he sat down on the driver's seat, he took one last look at the stars. Goodbye.

"Violet, take me home."
