Chapter 9 - Cat
Cat batted her eyes, doing what she could to make sure that the tears that now threatened to spill down her cheeks would stay in place. She felt Sia's fingers intertwine with hers as both of them sat, their backs pressed against the back of a couch. Footsteps echoed in the room as the Faceless Man made his round, the sound of something wet pressing against the floor filling Cat's ears.
Kyle was somewhere across the hall, probably safe in his little salt circle, protected from the horrors that the night had to offer. She hoped for his sake that he wouldn't do anything stupid and that he would stay in place.
However, a part of her, small as it was, wished that he would come and fight. Push the Faceless Man away so Cat and Sia could escape. She knew that if Kyle did something like that, he would get caught but that small part of her was alright with losing him.
In the end if it came to choosing between him or Sia, Cat would always choose the latter.
As the footsteps grew closer, Cat wondered how she had been wrong once again. It was her idea to go find the salt circle. She was so sure of herself and her ability to evade any danger that came her way that she even fought Nathan.
However, she had forgotten that Nathan had never been wrong. He was stubborn but he was never wrong and now he was somewhere beyond the darkness, safe with Ansyl.
Don't go. We need to stay together.
His words had been so true yet Cat had pushed him away.
"You're a coward," Cat growled, shaking her head while Nathan stared at her, his lips pressed together to form a thin line.
"I'm just thinking straight. You want to go back to the place where you saw this demon or whatever it is. That's risky," Nathan argued, trying to talk some sense into Cat.
"Hiding and playing along is just as risky. What if he is expecting you to hide? What if he's waiting for you beyond one those doors?" Cat asked, pointing at the three rooms behind them.
Ever since Brianna had been taken from the living room, Cat and her friends had been running down the hall but the hall never ended. She knew that even if they tried to reach the rooms at the end of the hall, it would be of no use. The Faceless Man wouldn't let them go. He would trap them in this hall and catch them all.
"Cat, please," Ansyl whispered, clinging to Nathan's arm. "Nathan is right. We need to stay together,"
"We need to find Brianna," Kyle countered.
"We need to stop fighting! It's enough!" Sia said, stepping between everyone.
Cat glanced at Sia who slowly intertwined her fingers with Cat's and she knew that the blonde-haired girl was on her side. That was all Cat needed.
"Then it's settled. I'm going to go look for the salt circle and fight my way to safety. You can hide and wait for the demon to find you," Cat said and then turned away from Nathan.
As she walked away, Sia and Kyle walked away with her but Nathan didn't. That hurt because Cat was leaving behind the boy she had grown up with. Maybe sometime in the past, he would have stayed by her side. He would have done the wildest things with her, taking the role of her partner in each crime.
Then one day she walked into their lives with her innocent blue eyes and a face that had taken Nathan's breath away since the day he had seen her. After that he was always around Ansyl, trying to impress her and slowly changing his ways to suit hers. Some would say she saved him from a path of self-destruction. Cat thought that Ansyl had ruined the best things about him.
He was no longer spontaneous and reckless. Instead, he had become calm and collected, thinking everything through. The only thing that remained the same about him was his anger and how easy it was to rile him up but then his anger was never the best part about him.
Just like that, she had lost her childhood friend to someone else. At least that's how Cat thought about it as she walked away from Nathan.
Now here in the midst of danger, she understood that it was never Ansyl's fault. Cat just needed someone to blame for making her part ways with Nathan and the innocent girl had been such an easy target to hate. Maybe it was long forgotten resentment that made her see Ansyl that way. She didn't know and now she didn't have time to contemplate it either.
Covering her mouth with one hand, she gripped Sia's hand with the other knowing that it would probably be the end for the two girls. There was nowhere for them to run or to hide, not with him so close.
It almost felt as if he knew where they were but he was just pretending, taunting them.
Even if they were foolish enough to run, he would just catch them.
Tears spilled from Cat's eyes as she heard his footsteps, her fear now overtaking her mind. Slowly she glanced at Sia whose eyes were glued on the wall, batting away tears but failing instead.
The girl beside Cat had become her everything, saving her from things that others couldn't possibly understand. It took just one touch, one word from her, and Cat would be set free. She had so much love to give to Sia but instead of showering her with love, she had brought the girl to her end.
Pressing her lips together, Cat knew what had to be done as the footsteps moved away from them. It was as if the Faceless Man knew what she was thinking and was giving her the chance to go through with her plan or maybe something else had caught his interest.
As the sound of his footsteps moved further away, Cat pulled Sia into her and gently kissed her.
With one kiss, she hoped to pour out everything she ever felt for Sia. She hoped to make the girl realize how much she loved her. As their lips met, Cat felt a fire ignite in her veins as Sia's hands moved through her hair, pulling their bodies closer.
Cat felt breathless and intoxicated, every thought fleeing her mind, leaving her behind with just the feeling of their kiss.
That was the moment that Cat had waited for all her life and now this would probably be the last moment of her life. She understood that time stopped for no one and it definitely wouldn't stop for her today. After all, she had been given a lifetime to love Sia, and yet she had let it slip through her fingers like sand.
Slowly she pulled away from the girl and smiled at her gently, already missing her touch. Her feet were ready to run into the darkness, her mind ready to be chased by the Faceless Man until she was finally taken.
However, Cat never got to her feet.
Instead, her body was pushed down onto the ground, her head hitting the floor. Stars erupted before her eyes as pain shot through her head. Disoriented, she grabbed her head as she batted her eyes, trying to make them focus on something instead of the red dots that blocked her vision.
Before her she saw movement, blonde hair moving away from her and she knew that Sia was up to something.
As her vision cleared up, she saw the Sia get onto her feet and run into the darkness. She had done what Cat had been planning to do all along. She knew that Cat wanted to sacrifice herself and instead she sacrificed herself for Cat.
Peeking out from behind the couch, Cat watched as Sia ran out in front of the Faceless Man. For a minute the two just stared at each other, silence settling down on both of them. Then he broke the silence as he raised a foot, moving towards Sia.
Knowing that now she had no choice but to run, the frail girl ran past him but he never chased her. Instead, he watched her as if her actions were confusing him. She could never outrun him so what was the point?
As he turned his back on Cat, she knew that now was the time to do something to distract the Faceless Man.
All Cat had to do was get up. All she had to do was make some noise, do anything to get his attention but instead, she just sat behind the couch, her body shaking with fear. Her eyes watched Sia run, her skin screamed out for her touch but her mind had already been consumed by fear.
Soon the Faceless Man chased down Sia. Soon he caught her by her long hair that flew behind as she ran. As he pulled her hair, she cried out in pain, struggling against his hold but failing.
Pulling her body back, he grabbed her by the head, and then before Cat's eyes, he slammed her head into the adjacent wall. Then he let go as Sia's unconscious body hit the floor, blood streaming down her face.
The Faceless Man then just stood there for a while as Sia's blood painted the floor beneath him. It was as if he was waiting for Cat to make a move, to do something to save her friend and then eventually join her.
Finally, the Faceless Man dragged Sia's body across the floor and disappeared into the darkness. All the while Cat watched, paralyzed by fear.
