Nothing To Do With Me

It was officially Friday, a full two weeks since Danny came to this foster home and he wasn't happy about it. He hadn't planned on staying for one week let alone two, but he had to stay for Toxin's sake and now he had a team of young heroes on his tail. He knew they were after him before but he was hoping it would take longer for them to actually run into him.

He had to be careful, not only had they found him already but he knew three of them when they had their masks off. Toxin spoke, 'You are concerned that they may find us.'

"Yeah, we're going to have to be careful around them, especially when they have their masks off."

Toxin hummed and Danny headed down for breakfast, he knew John and Mary liked cooking a good breakfast but there was more food then usual. Not only that but it was a bit more elaborate, on top of the usual toast, eggs, and oatmeal there were pancakes, a bunch of fruit, and even omelettes which didn't make sense because there were already eggs.

Danny decided not to question it and just started eating, at least he knew Toxin was going to be okay until lunch. Mary seemed unusually happy, no, scratch that, most of them looked happier then usual which was weird. The only ones that didn't were the twins but that was mostly because they were both happy all the time, it was unsettling.

Danny didn't engage in any conversation, he just ate and as soon as he was done he went to his room and waited until they had to leave. While he waited he paced and tried to figure out why they were all so happy, what could be so special about today? In the end he gave up and just went to school, he hated it but after today it was the weekend so he didn't have to deal with people.

They got to school and the first thing he did was go to his locker, as he was putting his stuff away someone spoke, "You seem less mad today."

Danny slammed his locker shut and looked at Richard, "Don't count on it."

Danny started walking to class and Richard immediately went after him, "Did something happen?"

"You mean aside from people being overly happy about nothing and someone annoying me despite me telling them to go away several times before?"

Richard stopped, "Wait, you don't know why your foster family is happy?"

Danny glared at him, "Call them fosters if you want but they're not my family, and I don't care why they're happy because it's got nothing to do with me."

Danny walked away but Richard caught up and stood in front of him to make him stop, "They're happy because you've been there for two weeks, they were worried you were going to run away."

"Well that was the plan before a bunch of shit happened and ruined it."

Danny walked past him and Richard followed, they walked into their class and no one else was there, not even the teacher. They sat at their desks and Richard looked at him, "If that was your plan why didn't you leave?"

"Like I said, shit happened, and don't go thinking it was because I wanted to stay because I wouldn't be here if I didn't have to be."

Richard was quiet for a few seconds, he looked a little hurt and Danny didn't like it, and he didn't like himself for caring. "But there are worse places to be."

Richard smiled before he saw the look in his eyes and he knew that Danny had been to places that were worse. He reached toward him, "Are you okay?"

Danny grabbed his wrist, "I'm fine."

Richard didn't believe him, he hadn't looked him in the eye and if he had learned anything about Danny it was that something was really wrong if he wouldn't look at him. Other people started walking into class and the minute bell rang so they quietly waited for class to start and when it did Danny didn't pay attention.

Toxin spoke, 'You lied, you are not okay.'

Danny wrote his response, 'What am I supposed to say, my life has been fucked up since the beginning and now he's trying to hunt me down but he doesn't know it?'

'Maybe not, but why do you have to lie to him?'

'Because he would keep asking questions if I did and I don't want to talk about it.'

Toxin knew why he didn't, Danny felt a weight settle in his chest and he knew it was Toxin, he almost hated that it was so easy for him to be comforting. Toxin might be in his head but that didn't mean he was okay with someone knowing him well enough to easily comfort him. It felt like forever before the class finally ended and he had to get through the rest while avoiding questions from Richard.

He finally got to lunch and he was getting irritated, Richard couldn't have been telling the truth. The people fostering him couldn't possibly be happy that he'd stayed this long, the thought alone was insane. No one wanted him around unless it benefited them and even then they usually decided that the pros didn't outweigh the cons.

Toxin spoke, 'Is it so unbelievable to think that they might actually want you to stay?'

"Yes."

'But why, others were cruel but what if they're not?'

"They have to be, I'm not that lucky, but you knew that."

Toxin was definitely getting frustrated but it wasn't about Danny's negative outlook on this subject. It was the fact that he'd been through so much that he really thought no one wanted him and Danny was stuck in that mindset. He could do a lot of things but he couldn't force Danny to forget all of that and change the things he felt, after all his feeling were justified.

Danny suddenly snapped back to the real world when the others sat around him and he felt like hitting his head. Toxin already felt like doing that but the feeling got worse when he felt how frustrated Danny was and he couldn't do anything about it. Lucas smiled, "How's it going Danny?"

He glared at the space in front of him, "You don't want me to answer that."

Isabella looked confused, "Why?"

"Because my answer will involve a lot of swearing and might end with me stabbing something."

They all looked at each other and Danny just ate his food, he felt a headache starting to form and it made his mood worse. None of them seemed to know what to say and Danny just left, he went outside and he was frustrated. He punched the nearest tree just to get some of his frustration out, it didn't help so he kept going.

He wasn't sure how many times he hit it but when he was done his hand was bleeding and it felt like he might have fractured something. He opened his hand and now he knew something was fractured, then his hand started to heal as something familiar covered his skin. When it was gone he opened his hand again and it was completely healed, he sat under the tree and sighed.

"Why'd you do that?"

Toxin shifted like he was trying to look him in the eye, 'I told you that I would not let anyone hurt you, that includes yourself. You may get hurt but that does not mean you have to deal with that pain on your own, I do not like it when you feel pain like this.'

"I'm used to pain."

'That does not make it okay, nor does it mean you should have to feel it at all.'

Danny was silent, the bell rang and he sighed before heading to class, he sat down just before the bell rang. The rest of his classes were torture, he felt a weight in his chest the whole time which reminded him that Toxin was there. He was the first one out of class when the day finally ended and his headache was getting worse.

Toxin spoke, 'I can get rid of your headache.'

Danny whispered, "It's fine, don't worry about it."

'You are my host and my friend, I always worry.'

Danny closed his locker and found not only Richard but Isabella, Lucas, Artemis, and Barbara standing there. He got irritated and walked away, they immediately followed him and Barbara spoke, "Wait up Danny."

"No."

Artemis caught up and managed to get in front of him to stop him, "Are you mad about this or something?"

Danny was not in the mood for cryptic questions, "Mad about what?"

Lucas looked surprised, "Wait, no one told you?"

"Someone better start making sense before I get even more pissed off."

Isabella took a step closer, "Richard, Artemis, and Barbara are staying over at our house tonight, we thought you knew."

"Great, fantastic, this day is just going to get worse isn't it?"

He rubbed his eyes as his headache got worse, Toxin seemed to be exasperated with all the things that seemed to be happening at once. Danny messed up his hair in frustration, "Fuck it, I don't care, if you want to go hang out with each other I don't give a shit."

Danny started walking away and they glanced at each other before they followed him, pretty soon they were all in front of him. The only one that wasn't was Richard because he was next to him, Danny was obviously very irritated as they walked. Then he felt something, he felt like someone was watching them, no, him, he stopped dead in his tracks and looked behind them.

There was no one there, he looked around for a second but there was absolutely nothing and it set him on edge. Toxin spoke, 'I felt it too, I don't like this.'

Danny silently agreed, Richard soon noticed that Danny was gone and stopped to see that Danny stopped behind them. Richard immediately felt a little worried, "Danny, what's wrong?"

The others stopped and Danny kept watching for a second, "Forget it."

Danny turned and kept walking, the others were a bit confused but knew Danny wouldn't tell them if he didn't want to so they dropped it. Richard kept glancing at Danny and he seemed less irritated and more serious, he really hoped it was nothing.
