Derivatives and review

As you have probably noticed, I am the most disorganized teacher ever. Ah!

Anyway. Here's a fun thing. Latin is the root of many languages, including a lot of english. So looking at latin words can lead to understanding english ones.

Below is all the many words I've unevenly given you over the course of this course. Let's look at how some of them relate to english! And also, hey, a bunch of words in one chapter so you don't have to search anymore!

Amare= To like/love

Puer= Boy. Puerile= childish, silly, trivial.

Puella= girl

Pictura= picture. Please guess what the derivative of this one could possible be.

Nuntius= messenger. eNUNciate is actually related to this word! Messengers had to speak very clearly.

Lupus= wolf

Ancilla= slave-woman. Ancillary= something that provides useful help

Servus= slave. Servant is related to this.

Aut= Or

Mater= mother. Maternal, matricide (killing of one's mother), matriarchy (rule by women)

Pater= father. See above, replace 'mat' with 'pat'.

Necare= To kill. As one might think, 'necro' (dead tissue) is from this, which leads to 'necrophilia' (attraction to corpses)

Currere= To run. Currunt, which you might recognize as meaning 'they run' in latin, looks a heck of a lot like 'current'. Yeah! Think of how electricity runs, and how the ocean currents run.

Ridere= To laugh. Ridicule, ridiculous, are from here.

Videre= To see. The 'I' form of this word is actually 'Video'! That's a big clue. We get a lot of visual words from this root, including 'visual'.

Habere= To hold. To inhabit is 'to hold/live inside'. Exhibit, habit, inhibit, prohibit, unable are a few others. A lot of words also come from the word part 'ab' which relates to ability.

Amicus= friend. Amiable= friendly

Vir= man. Virile= manly

Mulier= woman.

Arbor= Tree. You know arbor day, the day we plant trees? Yeah.

Silva= Forest. Sylvan= associated with the forest. We actually can trace the word 'savage' from this too.

Miserus= sad. Please, I dare you to guess this one. (Miserable)

Molestus= Annoying. Yeah. Molest= to touch someone who doesn't want it, ie to annoy them. The sexual context isn't quite implied.

Laetus= Happy.

Rivus= Stream. We get the word river from it. Guess they're close enough.

Agris= Fields. Agriculture is right from here.

Iterum= Again. ReITERate= to say something again. Re as a root means again, also. Does this mean reiterate is 'to again, say something again?'

Subito= Suddenly. Used without change in music today, meaning... suddenly. A sudden change in the music.

Ex= out of/from. There are so so so many words that use 'ex'. External. Extreme. Extra. Exterior. There are many latin words that feature 'ex', and from those words we get a lot of words. (Extra is a latin word meaning outside, exter is a word meaning outer)
